My horses would be at the back of the pasture where I couldn’t see them, I’d give a loud whistle, call their names and wait for the neighs ! As soon as I heard the neighs, I would hear the thundering of hooves as they came to get their treats ! They also learned the rumble of my car and would be running to the gate when they heard the car coming up the drive. Sweet times !

As a city kid who's parents had come from a small northern Michigan farm community, every summer I would go to my Cousens dairy farm, he milked 72 head of cattle, his son and i would go down to the pasture to open the gate so the cattle could go to the barn AM and PM, as a young boy i remember how powerful it made me feel that all these huge animals were reacting to us.My friends would go to summer camp for a week and I envied them, but I now know I was the luckiest of all.

As a city kid myself, I spent my summers well into my early 20s on my maternal grandparents' farm. Some summers I'd go to camps for a few weeks. I can tell you, it wasn't the same experience. My most precious memories are related to the farm. It was a lot of work and very busy but also fun, romantic, unique. I wish I could turn back time so I can spend one more time with my lovely grandparents, parents, cousins and friends. Time just flew by in a blink of an eye.
