South London life in 1979. Pulling birds, drinking beer, watching cop shows and cowboy films, trying to be cool and failing. Little slice of a young man's life basically.
I remember this song from a UK TV advert in the 1990's. Part of the clip had a Scania truck in it but that's all I remember apart from this cracking tune. I think it was from a milkshake advert but this song is just a great gem to enjoy and puts a smile on my face every time I hear it.
I remember it too. It was from the drink more milk campaign that was huge in the 80s. Around the same time, my school used to hand us out pints of milk with straws and digestive biscuits. Happy days!
Not sure how this was in my suggestions... haven't heard this for thirty years, brings back memories, thanks for having this up for all to see again. 👍👍
The 1st time I heard this was when my roommate and I were pawing through the latest batch of demo LPs I had gotten at work. By the time the farting, psyche jazz breakdown hit we were rolling on the floor laughing! Some like to paint the Punk/New Wave/Post Punk time in it's grimmest and most primal terms. There was so much that was good natured fun in music, which balanced the dour. I like to remember it as a proper follow up to everything that had been great about rock in the 60s +70s.
For any non-Brits, here are a few translations for words you might be having trouble with: The Sweeney = Sweeney Todd = Flying Squad = A division of the police who are able to arrive at the scene of a crime quickly = a British TV show from the 70s /// Fivers = Five pound notes /// Wandsworth = Wandsworth Prison /// Missis = Wife (or sometimes it refers to girlfriend) /// Station = police station /// Likely lads = self-possessed young men who perhaps engage in crime/drinking/fornication etc./// 'Swear like how's your father" = behave in a foul mouthed manner /// Posing = trying to look cool in public /// Pub = public house = drinking establishment = traditional British or Irish bar /// fancy = like (usually referring to a prospective romantic partner) /// flash = ostentatious /// bitter = a type of warm beer /// Pull = possibility of success with a prospective romantic partner /// gave the dog a bone = engaged in sexual intercourse /// old chat = bs /// - I hope that all helps.
Now I can finally sing along with you on this one, Sparkle! For a few days, no week, I have been listening to a CD of mixed songs and artists that Sparky made me some years ago forgot how much I enjoyed listening to it. Have not heard Squeeze..in ...like...forever. Thank for the re-pleasant-surprise, Sparky (what's up next S?)
Many of the kids used to sing this at school, (South London) when it came out in 79. I was only 12 so had no idea when he says 'give the dog a bone' he meant had sex with the woman. Ahhh, to be innocent once again. 😂😂😂
This was the first single I bought! It was at the height of the coloured vinyl craze and everyone seemed to be buying it in pink vinyl, but when I got to the record shop they only had black left. :-(
just today me and my dad were sitting at the dinner table talking while i was eating a sandwich and there were randomly a couple CD's stacked on the table so i obviously was going through them. i see a Squeeze CD and my dad told me i wouldn't know any of the songs but i saw this one and told him 'i tired playing this song on rock band a few times. it was really hard to sing along to.'. it's a small world.
This is a merely great song for the 1st 2:20 and an eternal song for the rest of it. A slightly trained 6 year old could play that piano closeout but it took real genius to write it. Combine that with the ethereal backing vocals and Damn! I miss this band
it's an interesting novelty; i know i lived in around London for many years as a student and eventually as a struggling musician he doesn't so much sings it as he says the lyrics with a lot of slang and references [WHAT WOULD BE 'ARD FOR YANKS TO GIT!] it's a good song to play at the end of the night at your house party when everyone's Knackered!! THANKS FOR THE post Cheers!!
I thought I'd check this song out when Alan Partridge mentioned in his book that he was at his mothers funeral giving a speech. He got so upset, he for some reason thought he was on his radio show and tried to introduce this song. Quality Partride.
The Indians send signals from the rocks above the pass The cowboys take position in the bushes and the grass The squaw is with the corporal, she is tied against the tree She doesn't mind the language, it's the beating she don't need She lets loose all the horses when the corporal is asleep And he wakes to find the fire's dead and arrows in his hats And Davy Crockett rides around and says it's cool for cats It's cool for cats (cool for cats) The Sweeney's doing ninety 'cause they've got the word to go They get a gang of villains in a shed up at Heathrow They're counting out the fivers when the handcuffs lock again In and out of Wandsworth with the numbers on their names It's funny how their missus always look so bleeding same And meanwhile at the station there's a couple of likely lads Who swear like, "How's your father?" and they're very cool for cats They're cool for cats (cool for cats) To change the mood a little I've been posing down the pub On seeing my reflection, I'm looking slightly rough I fancy this, I fancy that, I wanna be so flash I give a little muscle and I spend a little cash But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash And by the time I'm sober I've forgotten what I've had And everybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat Cool for cats (cool for cats) Shape up at the disco and I think I've got a pull I ask her lots of questions and she hangs on to the wall I kiss her for the first time and then I take her home I'm invited in for coffee and I give the dog a bone She likes to go to discos but she's never on her own I said I'll see you later and give her some old chat But it's not like that on the TV when it's cool for cats It's cool for cats (cool for cats) Me mum is down the bingo and the old man’s out of town They said that I could party so I wouldn’t mess around I spot a little diamond in the corner on her own The lads all try it on but end up with their fuses blown And then she eyes me bottle in a way that I condone So while the party’s raving I said give me some old chat And let her share me pint of milk because it’s cool for cats It’s cool for cats (cool for cats)
i deadass woke up one morning and remembered this song after like 5 years 😀👌
Lmao that’s dope 😌
I discovered this on Rock Band 😆😆 the drumming was so fun.😆
Yooo same!
What a bloody great song. Haven't heard this in years.
South London life in 1979. Pulling birds, drinking beer, watching cop shows and cowboy films, trying to be cool and failing. Little slice of a young man's life basically.
try not to be cool, if you be yourself then you'll be cool without realising, i know from experience
Sounds lovely
Horse & Groom Streatham high road 1979. Lovely jubbly. 😍
Doing the same thing in Boston Mass
Remember this as a kid in 70's and still loving it now 2022
It was in a milk ad circa 1992-93.
This song reminds me of how much I love Britain. Been livin here for nearly 20 years and loved every minute of it.
My history teacher played this song a couple weeks ago on a Thursday and i found it a week later. Ive loved it ever since.
Lol, had a beer, came here, read the lyrics, missed them and shut my eyes and it all came back.
It was cool for cats in 1979 and it still is in 2019.
and 2020
I'm cool for Cats in 2020 and counting.
And 2021
2021 still fire

BIG TIME
Yep, no need to even shower much in the middle of the pandemic when I haven't left the house for weeks
@@JS-bp1wp really? Why not?
That would be everyone
On a daily basis

What a timeless little tune. So damn catchy lmao
Brings back some great memories that’s for sure. Best era the 80s
its a 70s song

Wow 9 years ago how things have changed
Gotta love RockBand... They introduce you into loving new songs. :P
Just think..without this song we would never have the delights of "Luton airport" by "cats uk" later that year(1979).
I really like this song, it was also the most comically easy rock band bass song in history, even on Expert

One of my favourite Squeeze songs ever
Up the Junction gives it a run for the cats’ money 😛
Learned this from RB2, really glad I did. This kind of master peace would of been buried under all this modern music.
Now I can finally sing along with you on this one, Sparkle! For a few days, no week, I have been listening to a CD of mixed songs and artists that Sparky made me some years ago forgot how much I enjoyed listening to it. I remember telling this guy that this song reminded me of him. He was really pleased, as this is his favorite song, apparently.

SO CATCHY.... It just nails itself into your head

Saw these guys in the eighties, good stuff.
Many of the kids used to sing this at school, (South London) when it came out in 79. I was only 12 so had no idea when he says 'give the dog a bone' he meant had sex with the woman. Ahhh, to be innocent once again. 😂😂😂
Rock band 2 brought me here a long time ago but it is 2016 and I am still slapping cool for cats :) this one of my smoking songs
Sameee.
what are your other smoking songs
Oh how I miss Squeeze. Quintessential English group.
This was the first single I bought!
It was at the height of the coloured vinyl craze and everyone seemed to be buying it in pink vinyl, but when I got to the record shop they only had black left. :-(
I love it - and his leaned back tough rough voice. - and the el-piano whee .. a very another sound from Squeeze.
Discovered this band today and it'll be the soundtrack to my summer surely
A cool sound by a cool group!
Love that thundercats noise halfway through :)
September 7, 2022: Cool For Cats is still an awesome song, that makes me smile when I hear it.
just today me and my dad were sitting at the dinner table talking while i was eating a sandwich and there were randomly a couple CD's stacked on the table so i obviously was going through them. i see a Squeeze CD and my dad told me i wouldn't know any of the songs but i saw this one and told him 'i tired playing this song on rock band a few times. it was really hard to sing along to.'. it's a small world.

probably the thickest london accent ive ever heard

I still have the cassette tape! :-P
I’m native and I just love those first couple bars
I thought I'd check this song out when Alan Partridge mentioned in his book that he was at his mothers funeral giving a speech. He got so upset, he for some reason thought he was on his radio show and tried to introduce this song. Quality Partride.

Took my husband to this concert.
He didn't know Squeeze.
This is what he remembers.
This has the same bpm as the song
This song is very cool for cats
Someone has to put this track into a nice cat compilation, because cats
Memories of 2010
2017 STILL GOING STRONG!!!!!
Who remembers this on the milk 🥛 advert on tv hahaha promoting milk god I miss those days Hahahaha
Bro first time I’ve heard this song in like 5 years
That British accent tho! 😆
?
@@reecewharf It's a pronounced cockney accent.
Akaru Kai
💯 Cockney
What Americans call a "british" accent is a BBC English or Estuary accent.
Chris Difford is English from London.
What's wrong with his accent?
Best music ever
amazing change of chords
Must memorize this...i will be the coolest.
The Indians send signals from the rocks above the pass
The cowboys take position in the bushes and the grass
The squaw is with the corporal, she is tied against the tree
She doesn't mind the language, it's the beating she don't need
She lets loose all the horses when the corporal is asleep
And he wakes to find the fire's dead and arrows in his hats
And Davy Crockett rides around and says it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats (cool for cats)
The Sweeney's doing ninety 'cause they've got the word to go
They get a gang of villains in a shed up at Heathrow
They're counting out the fivers when the handcuffs lock again
In and out of Wandsworth with the numbers on their names
It's funny how their missus always look so bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station there's a couple of likely lads
Who swear like, "How's your father?" and they're very cool for cats
They're cool for cats (cool for cats)
To change the mood a little I've been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection, I'm looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that, I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle and I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash
And by the time I'm sober I've forgotten what I've had
And everybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat
Cool for cats (cool for cats)
Shape up at the disco and I think I've got a pull
I ask her lots of questions and she hangs on to the wall
I kiss her for the first time and then I take her home
I'm invited in for coffee and I give the dog a bone
She likes to go to discos but she's never on her own
I said I'll see you later and give her some old chat
But it's not like that on the TV when it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats (cool for cats)
Me mum is down the bingo and the old man’s out of town
They said that I could party so I wouldn’t mess around
I spot a little diamond in the corner on her own
The lads all try it on but end up with their fuses blown
And then she eyes me bottle in a way that I condone
So while the party’s raving I said give me some old chat
And let her share me pint of milk because it’s cool for cats
It’s cool for cats (cool for cats)
saw them play at the Bondi Lifesaver in Sydney long long time ago
Their masterpiece. They would be a great band if this was the only song they made. Quality over Quantity
That's not how it works, if you have one amazing song and a bunch of good songs then just having the amazing one won't make you a better band
‘Up the junction’ still
@@thomasyaxley2741 what i had in mind
