During my last lesson my teacher realized I was holding the "up" part of posting to trot a microsecond to long. Thus it was effecting my rythem and preventing me from being pushed up by the horse's movement. I worked on not doing that and had an "ah ha" moment. Suddenly I understood what people meant by letting the horse do the work and posting wasn't so exhausting anymore. I could only get it right for a few strides before I lost it, but the fact I even know what I'm doing wrong in the first place is a huge help.
Callie just demystified the whole rising trot for me. I have been pushing off my stirrups and double bouncing like crazy. Can't wait to try the subtle weight transfer to the thigh at my next lesson. I'm hoping my instructor will be pleasantly shocked!
My ah ha moment: When I read this from Donna Snyder-Smith’s book, page 33: To post correctly, the horse must be allowed to be the activating agent of the upward and forward swing of the rider’s hips. If you lift or push yourself out of the saddle with your own muscles, you end up pushing against your stirrups, softening your knees and jamming the saddle against your horse’s back. Once you have vaulted into the air in this manner, the horse’s momentum will overtake you and cause you to descend (fall) back into the saddle, behind the horse’s forward-moving balance point.” I think that this instructor was addressing these concerns too.
I'm going to incorporate this TODAY. I'm very much a novice and I get rattled around so bad my back is sore for days, and I can only trot for a minute or so. This is game changing, thank you! I'd better learn about the cantor too, because that is absolutely terrifying to me.
Take it slow and at your own pace, but speaking from experience, my first canter was a little bit overwhelming and big, but overall an easier swing to sit than the trot, and much less bouncing. Good luck!
today was my second riding lesson. And the bouncing was all over the place. I guess it takes practice, because at the time I felt like there was too much going on to relax. Like other things I have learned, I feel like it will happen and I will have that aha moment.
Yesterday, I went horse back riding after 3 years, took a mini lesson that was only gonna be that day and not any others, I watched the "How not to bounce" video 3 days before riding, this is the next day after the lesson, I tried not to tense my body, and I found that, that is what helped me, I did it perfectly no double bounce, my trainer was impressed since I was new at the barn and it was my 1st day, My tip would be not tensing your body and keep it nice and relaxed, hope this helped anyone. :)
@Teshanah Love that is very helpful advice. I've found that just having proper form does help me stay more relaxed in the saddle the few times I rode English (Huntseat). I hope you have many more wonderful rides.
Thank you, we've finally found what we were looking for. Seems like our trainers aren't pros at all. They'd urged us to rise on our own, so when we pressed into stirrups, horse was stopping. And they were asking why the hell are we stopping in the first place. Not to mention how tiresome it was.
My ankles were killing me and my instructor kept saying I was taping and not kicking and not squeezing hard enough. My feet kept sliding out of the stirrups and my balance was off. I am new, but I am thinking I was making it harder on myself then I should. Going to be going for another jumper lesson and hope this helps.
I wish I had found your videos a few years ago ): I used to have so much problems with trot in general, and my instructor DID NOT HELP. My personal advice to people is: Just give it time. It takes a lot of time to develop a good seat,so dont worry that even after months and months of riding, you still have to grab the saddle or get imbalanced easily, everyone takes different time to adapt. I remember my friend was really good at the start, when i was CRAP ans she never missed a chance to point that out to me. Well joke's on her,she quit cause she thought she was too good and i've stayed. Never quit ppl xxxx
Thanks for that, just started riding in class and i suck at posture and trotting, so much to think of, seems like everyone but me is getting it but as you say, everyone is different.
@@infinity401 Don't worry,I still feel like that every time I ride. Everyone's horse, posture, muscle power is different 😣 And the more you learn the more things you will have to remember to do while riding. Work on it more and dont worry,it will come naturally ❤️
What a splendid horse, so beautiful dress ! Your courses about rising and sitting trot are so so helpful for me my darling Callie that I found my good seat again last time I was riding on a thorougbred. I do not know how I could thank you !!! I précise, I 'm just 58 years old, it was my first lesson in the arena after a not too serious fall but it took me a few months again to feel better . I do not want to let riding down at all, Callie knows how much I admire her and how much she always manages to bring me hopes for as long as I started my passion again with more health issues and then having a bad fall, another one too. Little by little, looking at your videos ( and discovering ground work too) I 'm increasing my poor level as I used to have a very good seat. Callie' s really like an angel to me, far away from America, in France. Love. 🙆♀️👌🏻🐴💖💝💕🌹
I love your videos, they're very helpful. I love the fact that they are on TH-cam to watch. It helps me learn by being able to back up the video part-way and replay the videos that I am watching. I am able to see what you are explaining in the video! I am a visual, Kinetic (hands on) learner, so the fact that I have access to your videos is a benefit to me. Thank you for your videos, keep them coming, and keep up the good work!
thank you. I used to ride. 30+ years ago. I was good. Now, my body is out of shape and I'm disabled. Been riding once a week on a friends standardbred with a BIG trot. And, doing leg strengthening exercises at home. I could not figure out why I've been getting this double bounce thing. Your video has given me some insight into this. I will continue my efforts with my posture, think the problem is my weak ankles want to turn out. Thank you again.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I just came back to riding after being off for 22 years and I have been having a hard time with my posting trot. I am always absolutely exhausted after only a few minutes and I have just felt unbalanced and it was not right. My instructor tried to explain to me what I was doing wrong but it wasn’t clicking. This absolutely made a ton of sense to me and I have always (even in the past) pushing against my feet to push myself out of the saddle. I tried this in my saddle rack and could totally feel the difference…I am using my thighs to move my hips forward and I am not rising as high but I am sure once I get the bump from the horse that will help too. I can’t wait to try this at my next lesson. Thank you!
I just started riding English. Thank you for this video demonstration; it’s very helpful. I can’t wait to take my next lesson now. I love your horse in this video!!
My youngest and I take lessons together once a week. I grew up riding and my number one bad habit was bouncing. And now that we are going into trotting with these lessons I see it all coming back to me again after 20+ years of not riding. Yesterday’s trot was ok. But man I felt in in my legs afterwards. I guess I tensed up too much. I can’t seem to get that rhythm while trotting either. Today is our last day before summer break and we won’t go back till August and I’m afraid I’ll have to reteach myself again. 😖 Thank you for these videos. I grew up learning western English riding and right now our teacher only teaches western which isn’t a bad start. Hope I have an aha moment this afternoon. 😬
Thank you so much for the helpful tips! I recently fell off and all my confidence is gone. Rising trot is one of the things I've been struggling with and I'm always bouncing instead of rising up and down. But, I find it good to relax your body, and focus on breathing. Tensing up could cause you to grip, which you can loose your stirrup to. By the way, Carly is so adorable! 😊
yesterday I had my 5th lesson and asked my dad to record me trotting to see how I'm doing and I realized, after watching this video, that I was doing the double bounce because I was pushing up from my stirrups. And my instructor got onto me about my leg not being underneath me. But now I know. Thank you so much! (Also, I know this video is from 2019 and I'm commenting in 2022 XD)
Aha moment- when someone told me to hinge from the knee, and to find my balance point on the horse by standing and gripping with the knee for hitting the ball in polo. Then it made it easier for me to relax my lower legs. I found I had more balance and awareness for the rising trot on the dressage horse after. I still have to soften my lower half and make my rise smaller, but this video helps :) Thanks for this video, I loved it!
I have been working on the standing in stirrups thing, it seems like it will be very helpful once I can put it into practice more often... My legs tend to creep forward, and this helps with that as well as balance and keeping the knee down. It is a good exercise!
Thank you!! I need to physically understand this and can’t wait to try. This whole time I thought I had to lift my but with my muscles and have definitely been pushing on the stirrups too much. Are there also exercises we can do off the horse that will help with riding technique?
One that has helped me is to put the balls of your feet on a stair and push down with your heels. It helps keep your heels down when you are posting! Hope this helps! 😊
This definitely helped me to understand what is the Rise and Trot. I was depending too much on the stirrups (I even tried lowering them) to move me out of the saddle. By lowering the stirrups I was hitting the saddle and losing my balance this was painful for me and my horse. Watching your movement and the placement of weight, I saw quickly everything I need to correct. This is exciting for me I cannot wait to get back in the saddle and practice this technique. I am sure my horse will be much happier!🌼 TY!
Since changing school horse I’ve struggled with post trot as the new horse is a faster trot so my coordination is out, thank you this will help in my nxt lesson
This solved and fixed the mystery of the extra bounce I couldn’t get rid of no matter how hard I tried to maintain rhythm. So helpful thankkk yoouuuuuu! 💖
Your video was so helpful! Thank you for fully explaining this concept. An aha moment for me- using the outside rein to straighten out a horse who’s shoulder drifts to the outside of a circle. It makes a huge difference in having a nice bend or not, and helped my riding improve overall.
I have the problem of my foot sliding when I’m trotting, so I’m putting weight on it to stop it sliding, which is not ideal. How do you stop that happening? :) Carly is a beautiful horse! I love your videos, thank you!!
Majkita25 you should never need to grip with your knees unless it’s a cue to slow down. Gripping with your knee means you are not using your lower leg.
No stirrups probably helps the most. Try to do no stirrups for half the lesson and put them back for the other half. You will notice the change, and overall, let Ur hips move with the horse and don't brace with your knees or thighs, just relax and move with the saddle.
Helpful. You are an excellent rider. You make it look easy. Your horse is so obedient. I am a beginner rider (senior) - the horse I ride would not go in circles like that - unless I steer her continually - she tries a places tricks on me.
I had a nice little horse to learn to post on. Some horses are more difficult. The horse I'm working with now is pretty tight so she can be very choppy. For me it can be difficult to get a rhythm with her. I have gotten her feet freed up enough for her to get smooth and then she does exactly what you talked about. She does the posting for me, and it gets really smooth. I know it's in there. I know we can build on it together.
im a beginner rider and I always am horrible at trotting, mainly because I lifted myself up and out of the saddle every step of the way while riding in a posting trot. And I always became so out of breath no matter what I did; ill definitely try this at my next lesson
I’m in a group class with around 6-7 people and the instructors don’t pay attention to us individually, we all start the trot together and I started noticing that I was finding it to be too exhausting and I would keep stopping because my legs were exhausted from pushing myself up off the stirrups the entire time, I felt so miserable the past few days thinking I must be really out of shape because I’m the only one unable to keep the pace like everyone else. I had no idea that you are not supposed to fully stand up using our legs, our instructors kept did not teach us any of this, the entire time they told us to use our legs to rise up .. and now I’m so disappointed that I have a Bad teacher, I’ve had 4 lessons uptill now and I have been so discouraged because either I’m bouncing all over the place or I’m having to constantly use my legs to shoot up with the stirrups. I also feel bad for my horse because everytime I shoot up I slam back into the saddle and that must really hurt him 😔
Omg... Thank you for explaining that. I learned on some little horses the rising trot and had problems with the bigger horses. I did exactly as you said. Gripping with the ties and pulling myself up and lost the rhythm. I could only do it 2 times correct. Hopefully next riding session can be a step forward again x3
a big tip that I would use is: at first, it’s gonna feel bumpy, and sometimes feel fast when it’s actually not. If you relax, stop being tense and understand what you’re meant to be doing, it was easy for me. Plus when you’re relaxed and used to it you will get better at it and it won’t feel as fast, bumpy or sometimes a bit frightening!
Thanks for the visual and demo of what's wrong as well as what right looks like. Side note if you read this what type of pad are you using and where do you get it? Thanks again.
What was really helpful for me is to get the beat down and breathing into my hands, I am a singer and breathing from the diaphragm is really easy, but never thought of it in reference to riding.
Hi Callie, I love your videos, they are so helpful. I am learning the rising trot at the moment; my trainer tells me that I need to squeeze my lower leg when I sit, to keep the horse moving forward. Whenever I try to do so, I feel tense, and it is very hard to keep the tempo. Do you have any tips to keep the horse moving forward in the rising trot?
Dominique Roche @CRK My instructors says the same thing, squeeze my legs together on the sit, which is suppose to prep for a push to the rise. Callie would love to get your input on this squeeze the legs on the sit.
pariah mouse I don’t know if it is right though! Squeezing the legs on the sit. I am just learning to post and definitely have the double bounce Callie talked about. I have another group lesson today and will try the swing she talked about as well as relaxing the lower legs... Adventures in riding ! :)
I struggle with that as well, try standing in the stirrups- in order to balance, your legs will go under you the way they need to be when you are seated, it is good for balance AND leg position! You can find lots of videos on it, I don't explain things very well! It has helped me so far just in theory, as I haven't been able to practice it as much as I'd like to in the saddle... I also lift my leg at the hip and then pull my lower leg back, I use my crop (VERY lazy horse, instructor insists, and we only tap) to see if my ankle is in line with my hip. I do this as often as I need to when I ride, it has helped me quite a bit, I think. I need some film of me riding, or a reflective surface of some sort... (At this point I am so curious about how I look in the saddle I would settle for a car window to ride past, haha- any idea of how my body is physically positioned would help me immensely, I think...it is ALL ABOUT body awareness.) Among SO many other things, haha! Which is why it is so elusive and magical when it all comes together! And when it happens, you definitely feel it! Best drug in the world (and probably the most EXPENSIVE😳!) 🐎💞🐎
I like your video that's you do on horse and can i ask you how do I start my horse over the jump win I'm ride ing her thank you this video will help me win ride my horse i just started ride I toke a fall I'm just getting back on ride ing my 16 2 hand horse thank you Nannette
I am told by my instructor to put my calves and ankles on the horse and not my thighs. Which sends me way up in the air when I do the rising trot. What you say it makes sense and I will try it next time I ride.
Where should I feel my muscles working? Should I feel sore after a lesson like I worked my leg muscles or core afterwards? Is it in the thighs and hips or core? Or should it be so easy that I don’t get that sore?
Hi Cally, i have recently started to learn riding. I was told by instructor that i need to put my pressure on my heels in order to stand up straight for rising trot. And i am unable to balance myself. Hence I am told to do leg exercises in order to be able to stand on my stirrups as my legs are not use to doing it. However, in the video you are saying that hips are under use for rising trot. PLease explain what is the issue. I am unable to do rising trot for long
I have a question. How do I keep the weight on my thighs without gripping with them? In your example with the hand between foot and stirrup, would you put your weight on your knee when "standing up"? I mean, I don't really understand how I can still have my weight on my thighs, if they move up a little as well when "standing up" :)
I feel like I use too much of my lower body. Should I use my torso too?? My hips have a lot of movement. After school when I’m home may I show you a video of what I mean. I’ll have to upload it to my channel.
Anyone have tips for steering during the rising trot? I always tend to go “off the rail” without meaning to, and it’s tough to keep the horse from drifting in the wrong direction.
I remember when I was first starting out it was a struggle to apply leg when posting! But what I do is apply inside leg pressure to keep the horse on the rail, it'll eventually get easier!
My trainer tells me to step into the outside stirrup to keep the round during the post trot. It feels awkward and I lose the rhythms with the horse.. any suggestions?
Hi I had my first lesson yesterday and there was some rising but plenty of bouncing, ha ha. I know I was pressing into the stirrups so I will think about the thighs and horse motion more next time! My question is, how did you ask your horse for the trot? My instructor said to kick kick kick but when I watched her I think she just pressed? And the horse kept stopping the trot, and no matter how much I kicked he wouldn't go without the instructor sort of threatening it, lol. She said she shouldn't be doing this for me though and then the horse took off like a turbo and it was really intense start to the trot and a bit scary. How do I improve this?
Thank you for your videos. I found, putting all together makes me look Terrible and not smooth. When I start my trout, I usually loose contact with my feet and the horse usually stops. 🙄. I think I have to much on my mind. Keeping the balance, doing the posting, keeping the horse straight and keeping the speed. I feel exactly how you describe, like I’m doing a terrible amount of effort to go on posting.
Ah so that’s what I was doing wrong. I’ve hit the point posting trot where it’s clicked but, I still till I find that rhythm use the stirrups more than I’m supposed to though I hadn’t made the connection till now. Bet that explains partly why my bad foot’ll lose the stirrup sometimes too?
Could you please tell me what foot wear you use, looks really nice and comfy, I have a very thin leg, so riding boots are hard to find, your combo looks like it could work, are they half chap or gaiters? Thanks, from the UK
Today was my first day of the rising trot, I was learning the walk before. I couldn’t balance myself! I either went right or left I couldn’t keep up with the pace of the horse. I couldn’t do sit ups either because I just kept on going up and down and it felt too fast all of a sudden. I need some help here. I want to balance myself and go with the flow.
After my 4th lesson I trotted without stirrups and I found that I could do rising trot better which was odd for me and my trainer I guess 😅😅 I feel like I depend on my stirrups to much which is why I bounce. 😕
So what do you do? Just take the slamming with every stride? I guess that would be okay if you could sit the trot which many or most riders cannot do; I never could. I really don't think the style has anything to do with it.
During my last lesson my teacher realized I was holding the "up" part of posting to trot a microsecond to long. Thus it was effecting my rythem and preventing me from being pushed up by the horse's movement. I worked on not doing that and had an "ah ha" moment. Same problem. 3rd lesson and I was bouncing up and down left to right. Oh dear.

Usually your foot sliding out in the trot is when you lock your knee and hip, try to relax your knee and hip and you’ll find it’s a lot easier :)
Rohit Mapakshi glad I could help!!
@@thatblondeequestrian7673 got same problem. But when I do not use my knees... then I am flying off the horse...practice and more practice.
Thank you, Double Bouncing is one of my biggest problems, Especially going over trot poles.
Hope you get it figured out ❤
@@kairos4797 thank you. We have come a long way already.
Super helpful video !
Thanks a lot❤
I really love your videos😍
im a beginner rider and I always am horrible at trotting, mainly because I lifted myself up and out of the saddle every step of the way while riding in a posting trot. And I always became so out of breath no matter what I did; ill definitely try this at my next lesson
Great video again! Even though I can rise in trot extra help and advice is always very welcome. What a beautiful horse Carly is.
I can’t wait to apply your techniques on my 3 rd lesson tomorrow.
Best video that explaind to me how to do rising tort. Thanks a lot
That horse is beautiful!
I also feel bad for my horse because everytime I shoot up I slam back into the saddle and that must really hurt him 😔
A video about improving the rising trot for riders with extremely long femurs would be awesome.
SO SO HELPFUL! Thank you!!! Can’t wait to get back on the horse and try this.
Finally some tips that make sense. Thank you so much, great video!
ive had 4 lessons and i have avoided the double bounce luckily quite a lot so far though i do face it at times. thanks for this
I’m 11 yrs old and I think iced doubles bounced once in my life but I still watch your video
Tysm for the vid x
Thanks for the visual and demo of what's wrong as well as what right looks like. Side note if you read this what type of pad are you using and where do you get it? Thanks again.
A bit late but I use Dover's all purpose saddle pads as well as LeMieux, and a thin-line half pad.
What was really helpful for me is to get the beat down and breathing into my hands, I am a singer and breathing from the diaphragm is really easy, but never thought of it in reference to riding.
I’ve just started horse riding and this really helps.
Thanks for your efforts
This is so helpful, tysm😊 I've been struggling with this😖
Hi Callie, I love your videos, they are so helpful. I am learning the rising trot at the moment; my trainer tells me that I need to squeeze my lower leg when I sit, to keep the horse moving forward. Whenever I try to do so, I feel tense, and it is very hard to keep the tempo. Do you have any tips to keep the horse moving forward in the rising trot?
me too.
I have the same problem... Lazy horse needs lots of leg cues, but I tend to lose my seat when trying to give them...
Dominique Roche @CRK My instructors says the same thing, squeeze my legs together on the sit, which is suppose to prep for a push to the rise. Callie would love to get your input on this squeeze the legs on the sit.
@@suzdalton no on explained it like that to me, I need to try to squeeze on the sit...
Thank you!
pariah mouse I don’t know if it is right though! Squeezing the legs on the sit. I am just learning to post and definitely have the double bounce Callie talked about. I have another group lesson today and will try the swing she talked about as well as relaxing the lower legs... Adventures in riding ! :)
I’ve just started to learn toward when I’m trotting. Any tips on how I can fix my position, like doing stretches or trying to find a good seat again?
Oh my gosh it worked on my lesson today!!!! THANK YOU!!
Oh i absolutely Love your Videos! I would totally love having you as my riding instructor ☺️
Excellent video
I dont have problems with my trot but my ankles arent far enough back and I dont think I realized 🤣 next time I ride I'll make sure to focus on this 👏
I struggle with that as well, try standing in the stirrups- in order to balance, your legs will go under you the way they need to be when you are seated, it is good for balance AND leg position!
(At this point I am so curious about how I look in the saddle I would settle for a car window to ride past, haha- any idea of how my body is physically positioned would help me immensely, I think...it is ALL ABOUT body awareness.)
Among SO many other things, haha! Which is why it is so elusive and magical when it all comes together! And when it happens, you definitely feel it! Best drug in the world (and probably the most EXPENSIVE😳!)
🐎💞🐎
Excellent THANKYOU. So much. Kate from England. X
I like your video that's you do on horse and can i ask you how do I start my horse over the jump win I'm ride ing her thank you this video will help me win ride my horse i just started ride I toke a fall I'm just getting back on ride ing my 16 2 hand horse thank you Nannette
Thank you for that. Turns out I was trying to hard.
Well explained thank you very much
I am told by my instructor to put my calves and ankles on the horse and not my thighs.
Very useful information. Thanks a lot :)
I hurt my back during trot. Can you please tell me any exercise that will help me lower this pain?
Thank you very helpful. I am going to try
2:40 is there a reason for the saddle pad tobe like that? you schould always pull it up in the saddle so the wither is free while riding
just a question btw no hate. i was just wondering
I feel like I use too much of my lower body. Should I use my torso too?? My hips have a lot of movement. After school when I’m home may I show you a video of what I mean. I’ll have to upload it to my channel.
Thank you helpful tips for beginners
Anyone have tips for steering during the rising trot? I always tend to go “off the rail” without meaning to, and it’s tough to keep the horse from drifting in the wrong direction.
I remember when I was first starting out it was a struggle to apply leg when posting! But what I do is apply inside leg pressure to keep the horse on the rail, it'll eventually get easier!
Love this video!! So helpful!! Thank you!!
How did you ask your horse to go into the rising trot ,which part of your legs did you use.
Why I double bounce during rising and I feeling severe pain in my mid of the back 😢
How do you “ask for a trot”… complete beginner over here!
What is your biggest tip for beginner riders
Could you please tell me what foot wear you use, looks really nice and comfy, I have a very thin leg, so riding boots are hard to find, your combo looks like it could work, are they half chap or gaiters? Thanks, from the UK
Very helpful thank you.
Brilliant vid, thank you!
Does anyone know how to do a rising trot and not to have your feet move out of the sterups ?
Thank you very much ❤️
After my 4th lesson I trotted without stirrups and I found that I could do rising trot better which was odd for me and my trainer I guess 😅😅 I feel like I depend on my stirrups to much which is why I bounce. 😕
Oh yes! One of my stable mates has the double bounce and it’s so frustrating to watch bc otherwise she’s quite a nice rider.
Good video thanks for posting
Thanks so much
I can understand the movement but when up on a horse, simply losing my balance...
Thank you .. this was good :)
My god a kept going back diwn double bouncing in my rising trot every 20 seconds
Thank you
I found this the most difficult to do.
Good vid but it kills me that you’re on the wrong diagonal
🙄
Carly is so cute 🥰 😊
LOL I think I'm on the wrong video I do Western on my friends horses
So what do you do? Just take the slamming with every stride? I guess that would be okay if you could sit the trot which many or most riders cannot do; I never could. I really don't think the style has anything to do with it.
best video
