    Josh is very sharp. His technical knowledge and analysis is superb. And he relates it in a way that is understandable. Great video and content.

    Josh clearly has an engineers mind but was like....screw that ....I want to work with my hands and play with cars all day. Glad he did! Great source of knowledge!

    I am biased toward 355 content, but Dan, this is one of your best video's! Josh is a genius in not just his knowledge but the way he can explain everything in a clear and concise way, that a complete idiot like me can actually understand what he is talking about. I cant wait for this project to be done but also I wish it would keep going, so I can watch these videos. When the mechanicals are all solved, will you be doing things with interior and exterior? Keep up the great work

      No we will probably not clean up the rest of the car.

    Good thorough analysis of tbe condition of the heads. As per the cylinders condition…. The sleeves are coated with nickasil alloy. Two reasons. One is longevity and two friction. Or lack thereof… i have rebuilt many 355 engines. The cylinders were almost always the least compromised. They are incredibly resilient to wear. As long as the crosshatching is visible we don’t touch them. The rings on the other hand are chrome finished and they wear quicker. Most of the issues get solved by installing a new set of rings.
    But as you said,once the valve guides are out of tolerance i send the heads to the machine shop for new valve guides. However….
    I do not reinstall factory syntered guides. I use phosphorous bronze that are machined to accept viton seals. No teflon seals. The whole upgrade is cheaper than factory parts and guaranteed not to fail for a loooong time!
    I did a couple dozen 355 rebuilds in my long career working on these beauties. While working at the dealer and for the last 20 years in my own shop.

    Can't wait to watch this video, sounds interesting.. We were talking last night about all the drama, NGS has gone through lately, the California wreck got Jeff and I shook. Called my insurance agent yesterday, made sure uninsured motorist coverage was high enough. I really hope all the craziness has ended, and new positive things are coming your way. 👍

    Fascinating stuff. I love those kind of videos. All the engineering that goes in an engine is really a marvel.
    Edit : i would love to see the process servicing the valve guides.

    Josh could easily pickup machining if he was so inclined. He knows more than most mechanic's and or engine machinist. He's loves what he does.

    Excellent video explaining a much debated and sometimes misunderstood aspect of this engine design. What were the condition of the lifters, do they need to be rebuilt?

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are not needing work thankfully

      No clacking from the lifters at all when we originally ran it, so no need at this visit.

    When measuring clearance through diameter, one has to divide by 2 to get actual clearance. Or is the book spec clearance when measuring diameter...? Just wondering...

    Josh is the MAN !!! Dan, question; What is the name of the shop you sent your valve covers to get powder coated? Where I live, I'm not sure anyone will do them properly, I may have to ship them to be done (for the 355, engine is out, parts ordered from Ricambi) Thanks. Brad

    Very interesting as usual but may I respectfully recommend to use metric measurements and tools ? This is clearly a 6mm nominal diameter with probably ISO tolerances. There are standard precision rods sets that will tell you immediately if your guide is ok.

      If the factory spec values were in metric surely it’s good practice to stick with metric when measuring?
      I grew up with both Baldeagle nuts as well as metric but these days since the workshop manuals quote metric then that’s what I stick with. Simpler and less room for error.

    Great video guys. When the time comes for my 355 needing this, i will know what to expect. Is any machine shop able to do 355 heads or are there only a few in the US that you would trust 100%. I ask because it is such an expensive head and so much work, that you absolutely can't afford to have them screw it up.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure but I suspect there's certainly a few shops that can do it.

    • @exoticpower8073
      @exoticpower8073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any quality shop that is cool with multi-valve import heads is fine. I could do these heads myself on my Bridgeport mill if I wanted to. Wanting to is a real important factor.

    • @rickh633
      @rickh633 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ferrari heads are easy to do compared to Porsche or Jag heads. Just find a shop that hones their guides, uses a dial bore gauge to measure clearance and uses LIVE carbide pilots for valve seat machining.
