Trying to throw a Larger Pottery Moon Jar vase on the wheel

  • Following on from my previous Moon Jar attempts I decided to have a go at my biggest one.
My wheel doesn't go slow enough to throw big wide pots but I gave it a go anyway.
I used a lump of clay about 8-9 lbs.
It ended up OK at the end.
Don't think I'll try again though

anyone here telling him get a new wheel reveals they aren't potters and know nothing of the trade. He has developed a relationship with his wheel spending countless hours and hundred if not thousands of pots being made on it. he knows how it works and how to with with its speed nights splash pan. i wont be surprised if he lives and dies using his old wheel and that to me makes every piece he makes on it special in a way.

All you say is true but your getting too sentimental. Basically your saying anyone that wants a new wheel isn't a real potter is really narrow minded. I have a membership to a studio and use the same wheel but when summer ends I can't go anymore does it mean I'm not a real potter because I have to find a different wheel to use? I hope not I really like pottery

I took three semesters of ceramics at my uni, and when I threw, I used the same wheel consistently.
One semester there was a young woman who really was a special snowflake, and in front of the whole class one day, she asked me not to use "her" wheel anymore because I was moving the seat to suit me and that was just too much of an inconvenience for her, so I should move elsewhere.
After that, every day I went to the studio (which was most days), even if I wasn't using the wheel, I'd go in and drop the seat down as far as it would go.
The first time, one of my classmates started laughing and said she'd been wondering what I was going to do.

Terrific. Great throwing, especially with your fast wheel.

Amazing! What others would do is to create two bowl shapes and join them together, or use a blowtorch before doing further bellying to make sure the lower portion can support the upper half. But this guy did it in one go. Genius!

Brilliant and inspiring to all us amateurs. Your "it could all still go wrong" comments give us hope. Agree with MamereClaire - go and bend a wheel manufacturer's ear.

Beautiful jar !. If a wheel company had any smarts they would be giving you a free wheel just so you could use it on TH-cam. It would be great advertising for them. Claire

i made something a just a tad smaller than this and instead of a rim i put a rounded lid on it so it looks like one big sphere with a little nob on top to grab the lid
