That stuff about Teostra's dust causing lung damage makes me want to see a video covering the worst injuries monsters could give you as a hunter. kind of like the ecosystem services/hunting video though i'm not sure if it's more to do with the people rather than ecology, i just really like it when UHC brings up the monster human relationships topics.

The dander has always been one of my favorite parts of these two as I find it a genius concept on top of being not even that hard to believe (given what can happen in mines) so I'm glad to see them done justice here. The part about how much more lethal and damaging Teostra's dust explosions are compared to any other monster in particular was really nice, as it properly shows why the two specifically are so feared as elder dragons when so many monsters these days just have explosions tossed onto them to be another thing they can do. There's a scene in one of the mangas where a local population worshipped an abnormally large and brutish Brachydios they called "Godslayer", and the story of it ends with a Teostra coming down and killing it easily. Given the sheer devastation it's unique blasts could cause on the lungs and other internal organs it's completely unsurprising.
They don't give gold to second place.

Ok but that idea about a teostra deviant based off the Tsavo maneaters would be fucking cool. Making it like primordial malzeno, with adjustments to the base dragon's proportions, would work well with this idea, with a lither and starved-looking teostra. They would obviously need a quest with a pair of them as well, to make the reference even closer.
Edit: oh boy next episode is about "big ugly," that'll be neat

Paleontology in the Monster Hunter world must suck ass as both a profession & a science. I imagine that it must be very disheartening to spend months carefully excavating the bones of long extinct creatures only for some big-chinned dinosaur to either crush them with said jaws to eat them or stick them to it's body & roll away, more than likely destroying the fragile bones. Or some fire lion moving into a potential fossil site and just casually destroying anywhere from a few to dozens or hundreds of fossils with a single click of it's jaws because it wanted make a nest.

  • @dianslabbert504
    @dianslabbert504 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

Teostra being found in the gen 2 swamp I think are primarily there for Sootstone ore which can be found in the caves by the giant crystal clusters. I recall it being said in Hunting Life that the area is rich in it. Sootstone is described as being crucial raw component in making their cannon ammunition and is likely now also used for other explosive artillery weapons.
Sootstone probably contains a lot of either sulphur, nitrates or phosphorus. These minerals are possibly like salt for the fire ED pair in order to make their dander and help fuel their auras and attacks. And now that humans have developed gunpowder weapons it makes the competition for it so much fiercer between humans and the duo. It also doesn't help them much that something as large and powerful as Gogmazios is also competing for it.
Teo and Lunastra raiding towns and forts for their gunpowder stores are maybe really desperate individuals.

So, I started with Rise. As a total newbie, yeah, I struggled a bit in the early game, but eventually I got going and just could not be stopped. Few monsters could get me to fail a quest, and many couldn't cart me twice.
And then Teostra carted me eight times in a row.
Yeah, he triple carted me twice and was en route to do so again when a lucky turf war turned the tides in my favor by allowing me to recover just enough to defeat him.
From that moment on Teostra became, and still is, my favorite monster in franchise. And it also helps that his Rise theme is just perfect.

I was rewatching this video when I made a connection that made me look at a character in a new light.
The Huntsman is often seen having not much stamina, having to fight in short bursts and often having to sit in meetings with the Research Commission. Now this could be due to his age, but most other First Fleet members aren't slowed down by their age so much so Huntsman would have to be significantly older than the rest of the First Fleet including the grizzled and grey Commander. However there could be another reason.
As someone who has a loved one with COPD, not being able to properly breathe can significantly reduce one's strength and stamina to the point that they can have trouble holding things or standing for extended periods. The Huntsman also appears to have a history with Teostra, though I can't recall if it is the same Teostra as the one from the quest or the species in general. So it is possible he took a blast from Teostra in the past and though he survived it significantly damaged his lungs which has crippled him but a true master never rests, especially on the Research Commission. He still has much wisdom to impart on newer hunters and even steps in himself when needed though as seen by his fight with Velkhana sometimes his limits can't be pushed past.

Also I wouldnt mind a Intersex Teo/Lunastra who circles between Blue Fire, Heat, Blast, and normal Fire Mode.
Interesting is, Lunastra and Teostra, mainly Lunastra are probably based on a old Chinese Legend, where a Moon Goddess is guarded by two flying Lions.
Lunastra is a female flying Lion whit a Moon Theme. And her Armor might be potencially Chinese Inspired, but I am more speculating there. Sounds like a save bet.

I think that it's not always a problem. Luna vanishing is a bit of one because they have her male counterpart in so many games without her, yet on the same hand gender exclusive hunts aren't unprecedented so I'll give it a pass but hesitantly.
Otherwise I see no problem with monsters having limited endemic ranges, my only real issue is that they bring so many back if I'm being honest. Everything just seems to randomly live everywhere just with more.
(I'm not really that against it, they just do it a LOT, and even then it's mostly a lore thing moreso than a gameplay complaint)

In regards to the Kushala-Teostra rivalry I imagine Kushala is actually just as dangerous to the Teostra as vice versa. If the fire lions use airborne dander as a main offensive trump card a foe that is able to disrupt this air suspended blast would spell trouble for the manticore duo. Of course heat is Kushalas big weakness too so makes sense they have short fuses for each other

You discussed the relationship between the fire lions and Kushala, and I wonder what their relationship would be with monsters such as Glavenus bulls.
Glavenus have metallic skin like Kushala, but do seem more adapted to high ambient temperatures and will frequently heat up the tail for display/aggression
Especially since both are found in the Old and New Worlds, in volcanic regions they may show fierce competition for mineral deposits when the bulls come to these regions. Unless since they are looking for different kinds of minerals and they’re showing resource partitioning
What’s more interesting is their relationships in desert environments when they overlap. Since glavenus actively seek out mineral deposits, perhaps the fire lions follow Glavenus to ore deposits and either chase them away (almost like kleptoparasitism but with rock) or perform their own search in the area (like a honey guide and honey badger)

I speculate that temperature has a signifigant role in the gestation and growth of infant teostra and lunastra, for two reasons. One, i theorize that the reason lunastra burns hotter and breaths blue fire, is for gestation, and aside from protection from kushala, teostra opening up manga channels during nest building is to release more heat into the area. This theory is a stretch, but with volcanoes and areas of tectonic activity are so important to elders, aside from minerals, i also believe that elders are able to absorb abient energy. Even velkana, a monster you would think would hate the heat, goes to the recess as a part of its life cycle, as well as building its nest over an open magma channel. So exposing the young to higher temperatures during gestation and infancy, might play an important role in their growth. I would also like to jump into a theory, that if dragon element is some kind of bacteria, then maybe it processes geothermal energy its nutrition, and maybe even what fuels the elemental powers that elder dragons posess. In fact, red lightning might be a result of overfeeding this bacteria, causing the energy to be expelled in excess in uncontrolled and potentialy self harmful burst. This could explain why deviljho and ebony odogaron are so hungry, they may not have the right tools or level of durability to bathe in geothermal energy like elders can, so to support their elements, they have to regularly take dense emergy packets in the form of animals and potentially keep their dragon element from eating them alive.

Hmmm..... I think that the variable reported aggression could be linked to if the locals mine for mineral/historically mined in a Teostra's territory.
They DO say they let non competitors live and let live. Given their long lives and the general consensus on elder intelligence I'd say old grudges could lead to an unpredictable and varied amount of aggression.

The fact we fight Teostra a lot earlier in World and that Lunastra isn't even in Rise also hints at a higher number of males.
I personally like Teostra and Lunastra very much, having met them in Freedom Unite initially and then in World (although Lunastra isn't a fun fight by any means, with her constant blanket of flames, infinite range tail whip, slow-killing inescapable ultimate and, especially, general lack of openings). They're particularly adorable when they cuddle together (as long as I'm outside of nuking range) or protect one another.
I have to disagree on the musical theme however. Rise ruined it for me. In my opinion, many of the themes that were in World got butchered by Rise, but this one feels worse because it was one of my favourites (whereas Rajang and Tigrex I never particularly liked). Bazel's theme is the other great casualty, losing its WWII feel in Rise (but the monster itself was completely thrown out of its former role so there's that).
Admittedly, I do like busy musical pieces I have to listen to multiple times to catch all the subtleties of. Someone on TH-cam mixed Teo's and Luna's themes together and that's my favourite version of their theme.
Wilds seems to have at least some part of its story revolving around lightning so it would be a shame to not have Kirin and Namielle back. I hope the flame kitty pair will be back too, simply because I like them, except with a Lunastra that doesn't feel like a chore to fight...

    • @lasselen9448
      @lasselen9448 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@joshuasgameplays9850 It's difficult to explain. It lacks weight, presence. More "cute funny cat" than "Emperor of Flame", to exaggerate the idea. The same is true for other themes. It matches the eastern-inspired setting of Rise, but not something as threatening as Teostra. I would possibly not notice it had I not played World so much.

I really bounced off Teostra’s Rise theme at first, also having been a big fan of the World version. It grew on me significantly over time but it can’t *quite* draw even - when the vocals come out strong in the climax, it just grates harshly on my ears for some reason. Otherwise it’s got a nice, wild feline character to it, next to World’s majestic procession for an Emperor.

Honestly for the longest time I thought Teostra and lunastra were carnivorous. It was a real shock when I read deeper into the lore and found out that they almost purely eat rocks like coal and ore. Guess the closest real-world equivalent to that kind of diet would be parrotfish species?

7:07 Made me laugh. "Lmao fuck this guy". Never knew Teostra blew out most of the Elder's Recess! Cool stuff! On the topic of cats, I wonder if you'd ever do a video on Felynes. Always wondered about the Felyne lore, why they're so ridiculously hardy and willing to fight dangerous monsters as just companions to humans, but they're so people-like it might be more of a sociology than biology video...

from dander dragons to dandy dragons, future iterations did wonders for these 2... except that 1 alteration lunastra got in Iceborne where they turned off a unique interaction with a nich armor skill to make it good. it was an interesting idea to change her moveset, i'd say more monsters that are too alike in moveset need this but her 5th gen execution is up for debate.
since the new world is where they go to die, the longer mane could mean older individuals.
if they are more inclined to stick to their territory, this may be one of the reason they have the reputation for being more aggressive than other elders that often won't care about other creatures unless provoked. after all, they are guarding their home turf, that may also be an indication of success. other elder, that are more nomadic, don't care to defend a home if they just move on often anyway. elders are said to have intelligence like humans so it's possible they will; let some things live, kill others on sight, and use the full extent of their weaponry on greater threats. hunter being in those last 2 tiers only. lunastra may be more inclined to flee in the old world because they are more carious at a young age, the male bias may explain this.
it would be interesting to know why teostra's in the swamp, it's believed that basarios is there because they are too young to handle the temperatures of the nearby volcanoes so they wait to venture there in a later stage, while still not reaching adulthood yet. so swamp basarios are younger but it's unclear for teostra. it may be a situation of being kicked out of the better territory.

Reminder of the time I tricked my friend into playing World's introduction quest for Luna ,WITHOUT telling him it was her quest lol, he died so many times ...
if I can be honest I kinda wish the next game gives us Lunastra alone for a change, so far we always got them together or just Teo.
Question time, do you think the fire lions endulge in meat eating too? Ores are good but they don't really give you a lot of proteins for growing your body...

Honestly this quest confuses the ever living f out of me. Who decided giving an intro quest, where you don't even defeat her, a 15 min time limit while also keeping Luna at full hp.
The fact that Toaster makes an appearance and wastes time only adds insult to injury.

I have always had the unpopular opinion of loving lunastra in world she really leaned into the preperation part of the series that really diminished in world and especially rise... The idea of preparing with fire mantle, fire resistance and heat resistance just to be able to get close to luna really sold the how powerful and scary in universe elders can be
As for teostra 5th gen really did a lot to improve his fight... Old gen teostra was a bit uh annoying... He had the "i run at you and deal half your health bar" move and would spam it a bit too much to the point where the fight became straight up unfun
