      1) During the last dynasty of China-Ching dynasty, the whole china was in turmoil, that was the time when many chinese from two south eastern provinces of China: Canton and Fujian, migrated to south east asia- malaysia, singapore, indonesia, thailand. Chinese in south east asia nowadays mostly speak dialects of these two provinces of China. Foochow (Fuzhou) is the capital city of Fujian, but surprisingly you could only find people speaking Foochow dialect in only two towns in Malaysia- Sibu and Sitiawan in Perak state, west malaysia. Those who grew up speaking Foochow including myself, usually have been complaint by others that we have very strong Foochow accents when we speak Mandarin and English, sad :(((. Majority of chinese in Malaysia speak Hokkien, Hakka (in Kuching), Cantonese, again these dialects originate from Fujian and Canton provinces.
      2) Chinese came to Sibu in the late 19th century, led by a Ching dynasty governor called Wong Nai Siong, and he was a christian (likely Methodist) pastor. He is considered the pioneer of Sibu, and there is a monument garden in Sungai Merah that commemorate him -about 10km from Sibu town. Because the first batch of chinese who came to Sibu was christians, this influenced the subsequent development of christianity in Sibu. Most people in Sibu are christians (chinese,Iban, Bidayuh and other indigenious people), and this is also one of the towns in Malaysia with most churches.
      3) Regarding kolok mee, precisely its called Kampua mee in Sibu, whereas Kolok mee is the version in Kuching. I left Sibu in 1999 after i finished my high school, regretfully over the years when i went back to Sibu intermittently, I hardly could find the authentic version of Kampua mee that tasted like how it was in the 90's. Many hawkers try to cut cost so the quality of the noodles drop, and I can say even if you taste one now, probably it doesn't taste like the real Kampua mee that we had.
      4) The largest Starbucks in Malaysia is in Sibu, a double storey building- only 500 meters walk from Delta mall.
      5) This might be out of topic, the must do thing in Sibu when I went back there was washing hair. In Malayisa, we have a specific service in the saloon, its called wash hair (inclusive of scalp and neck massage), without cutting your hair. Usually it costs around RM20, walk into the Sanyan tower (that tall green building > 20 floors), it's a shopping mall and there are plenty of saloons there. Try one and they will give you a superb scalp massage.
      5) Apart from Kampua mee, another two famous delicacies in Sibu is called Kom Pia (rounded bun with a hole in the middle), and Ding Bian Hu. I would recommend Ding Bian Hu, ask a local chinese about this dish, everyone will point you to the most famous stall near to the Sibu Pagoda, shop name: Chop Hing Huong, address 2-40, Jalan Tukang Besi. You must try this dish in Sibu, if you don't, you are considered never came to Sibu before. For almost 4 decades, just two months ago I found out this hawker is actually my distant relative. LOL.
Try to wikipedia Sibu, it tells you sufficient information about the town.

First of all thank you for coming to Sarawak. The other TH-camrs would just stick to KL & claim that they’ve seen it all in Malaysia. Not you two. You two are experiencing the real Malaysian adventure. Well done 👏🏻 I’m a Sarawakian I salute your effort in wanting to know about my home state. Let me tell you this; it’s not the high rise buildings, buzzing cities or mega malls that make a country, it’s the people, food, culture that matter. Luke & Naomi, you’ve come at the right place.

Welcome guys to my birthplace that we call Sibu. I am so touched that you guys visited among the underrated city in Malaysia. Thank you for this video.
Kampua mee is extremely delicious there. As for me, I mixed it with laksa soup and it taste better. If you managed to try, you know I won't lie.
BTW, if you still in Sibu, you may consider the following to visit:-
    1. Bukit Aup Jubilee Park
    2. Bukit Lima Forest Reserve
    3. Other touristic places in Sibu (Oops! I can't remember wherelse so feel free to ask the friendly locals there)

The pagoda temple - I remember it was under construction when I was 12 years old.
Night market - Since I was a boy, we family visited night market every Saturday night.
The Pasar Sentral (Central Market) - my memories there in the late 90s, when having meal with my late mom.
I remember walking around Sibu for lunch when I was a legal clerk in Sibu in age of early 20s. thank you guys for bringing me back memories. I am now residing in Kuching.

4:30 Oh dear… no more express boat from Kuching to Sibu? That’s sad…
    7:38 That’s a nice spot to catch the sunset… 😊
10:16 Sibu was started by the Foochows when some of them were brought over from Fujian during the reign of Rajah Charles Brooke. There’s a place somewhere in the suburbs where you can try making noodles… but you need to contact them for an appointment.
33:20 You are right, Naomi. Sibu is rather underrated. Most people come to Sarawak for the national parks near Kuching, the Mulu Caves via Miri... But least visited by tourists would be the town of Kapit upriver from Sibu. It has only been connected by tar sealed road probably in the last couple of years. Prior to that, the only way up there would be by the river express boat. A few of those now has been converted as a river cruise boats. If you guys are still in Sibu, see if you can check them out.

Malaysia only existed in September 1968 after Sarawak, North Borneo or now called Sabah, Singapore and Malaya or the federation of Malaya merged and formed Malaysia. Most of our fellow Chinese and Indians in our country came into the picture long before Malaysia was formed.
