    When he swapped to the deeper richer tone in "All of me," that is supposed to happen it was part of the song. (Although the crack wasn't supposed to happen, and of course the lower register sounds better it's because he's a baritone)

      They do.
      The reason professional singers will have vocal trouble that gets highlighted in internet videos is because they have to go on huge tours, singing full set lists night after tonight. It's not always as simple as technical issues, fatigue is a thing regardless of how good your technique is. 90% of the people talking about the strengths and weaknesses of singers will never have to do anything as vocally taxing as even one season as a professional singer.

    Judging a good singer by some moments in which he may have "wrong" is like judging a great basketball player by some videos in which he does not shoot a basket. There are many factors to consider, especially in a live concert, which can lead to not being "perfect" in each song. So, already the title Why You Shouldn't Sing Like John Legend reveals a lot of superficiality of those who want to give lessons and in his/her career he/she has not done even one tenth of what a professional singer like John Legend did.

    • @Supermaaaaaaannnn
      @Supermaaaaaaannnn 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shut up. What are you measuring his “success” by? Fame and the amount of songs he’s sold? Because that doesn’t dictate success. That means people are stupid and will follow anything. John has always sucked. He’s never been a great singer and he never will. Is not in him. He’s just an ok musician. Literally probably a little less than ok. Huge ego and pride, enough to believe it himself. Just stop. I dislike Shakira very much yet go randomly listen to her live. Always on point as much as I don’t like her. John is garbage. Surrounded by talented people that helped his music sound good. John Shame is his name. Not Legend. Frustrated church musician who was like Satan so prideful and wanted all the recognition. He both sucks and is going to hell. Can’t get worse than that.

    Wow. Great content ! I agree that John's added flare makes for bad technique, but sometimes it adds a little magic to the song. I think you can make the argument that he knows good technique, but chooses to break the rules to add a style that's sort of his "signature." It's not healthy, but that's what vocal artists do sometimes because they see receive affirmation from others that their voice sounds great and doesn't "need fixing." Some of Eddie Vedder's vowels were terrible, but I think he had a style thing going that was popular in the grunge era. Another one is John Mayer, where he sometimes goes for a certain breathy, raspy, congested sound. You can tell that he has a hard time reaching into higher notes and I think he's had 2 vocal surgeries, so you definitely shouldn't copy his voice either, maybe sparingly. As a beginner singer (well still am), I tried so hard to sound like a lot of male pop singers until my teacher pointed out that their technique was terrible and that their style can lead to some bad habits.

    • @likethecheeze321
      @likethecheeze321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with this. John OVERALL has good technique. He is well connected to both the chest and head voices. His natural vibrato is beautiful and prevalent. But when you do a LOT of singing, sometimes people let the fatigue get the better of them. Also, unlike a lot of singers, he's sitting. I know when I am teaching, if I showing belt technique I STAND TF UP to really get under those notes. Even when sitting on the edge of my seat, if I am concentrating too much on the piano (when accompanying students on a song) and trying to show them something, if my voice is going to give me a proverbial "middle finger" of exhaustion, it will DEF be when I'm sitting. Just thoughts from a fellow professional who has experience with vocal therapy, and 30 years of training & experience as a performer and a coach.

    There are people on this comment board who are blaming long tours and heavy schedules for artists' vocal problems. My response is: Floor Jansen. She drives her voice like nobody else, yet she retains her ability to sing with a clean tone. It's technique. I love John Legend, but his technique occasionally fails him. When he sang in the live Jesus Christ Superstar show, he was unable to make it to the high note. Proper technique would greatly increase his vocal endurance. I commend this voice teacher for having the courage to point out where even great singers can improve.

    Ive been singing in my car seat since the 90s.. usually, 2 hrs a day, not always in traffic but... it looks like John was not working his lower abs. He just tends to lean back into his comfort zone whereas different keys require a change of the plan.
    I sat outside an open area listening to John from 200 yards away, the acoustics therein was phenomenal allowing John to do as usual. He sounded great with accompanying music etc.
    I used to sing like Ray Charles because I was a smoker a decade ago. Full voice allowed me to write differently, oft better, not always.
    I go like A5, A6... I can float about like Smokey Robinson but never like John Legend due to a diff in styles. Whereas Bryan McKnight allows me to mod his arrangements and make his songs better. He has a lot of lame songs, actually. Yet combining a bit of Ray Charles minus the raspity goodness with Bryan's best qualities could be a paying gig.
    Anyhow, John is at his best when adding to the fun of No Diggity.
    At his worse, well, we just kinda accept the bad with the good as with Lady Gaga and her Shallows hit.

    I have to respectfully disagree. Your Adele video was spot on. I have been saying those things about her for YEARS. But this? His beautiful vibrato, and generally overall good technique suggest that other things are at play. Because even if you're fatigued or sick (or getting OVER an illness), the show must go on when you're someone like him. And desperate times sometimes summon desperate measures. These examples are not a regular occurrence for him. There are far worse male pop singers out there. I'm surprised that you chose him at all.

    I think there are too many variables. I've never heard of a singer who's voice never cracks. Also, I don't understand how nasal singing is a problem, or distortion. Both have been proven to be totally sustainable sounds. Yodeling is fine as well. All are sustainable, and a lot of great singers use all of these for the entirety of their careers, well, maybe not by classical standard career length. Also, you might consider watching Maynard James Keenan from the bands Tool, and A Perfect Circle, and his posture. All of these sound like ironic or pretentious standards or ideas of how singing should be or sound. John still sings really well, and I still dig the sounds he makes. Gonna have to respectfully disagree with most of the video. No hate though. I do think that people should learn proper classical singing technique before they experiment with style though.

    Never cared for him/indifferent to him.
    Only song he has I like is Tonight (Best You Ever Had), and when he was featured on Andre 3000's Green Light. Aside of that, he's 🤢 to me (will forever laugh at People Magazine crowning him Sexiest Man Alive in 2019...of ALL the billions of men on Earth he's the hottest one!? 😕😅😂😆)

      because pop singers favor style over clasiccal technique. it's stylistic choice. great classical technique is only applied for opera singers or broadway or musical theater singer. i hope people stop mock pop singers the way they sing. i don't like this vocal coach seems like she only studies traditional singing technique not for contemporary music

    Who would want to be constantly flat nasally have poor technique no tone no power and no vibrato on purpose.
