Wow. Great content ! I agree that John's added flare makes for bad technique, but sometimes it adds a little magic to the song. I think you can make the argument that he knows good technique, but chooses to break the rules to add a style that's sort of his "signature." It's not healthy, but that's what vocal artists do sometimes because they see receive affirmation from others that their voice sounds great and doesn't "need fixing." Some of Eddie Vedder's vowels were terrible, but I think he had a style thing going that was popular in the grunge era. Another one is John Mayer, where he sometimes goes for a certain breathy, raspy, congested sound. You can tell that he has a hard time reaching into higher notes and I think he's had 2 vocal surgeries, so you definitely shouldn't copy his voice either, maybe sparingly. As a beginner singer (well still am), I tried so hard to sound like a lot of male pop singers until my teacher pointed out that their technique was terrible and that their style can lead to some bad habits.
I agree with this. John OVERALL has good technique. He is well connected to both the chest and head voices. His natural vibrato is beautiful and prevalent. But when you do a LOT of singing, sometimes people let the fatigue get the better of them. Also, unlike a lot of singers, he's sitting. I know when I am teaching, if I showing belt technique I STAND TF UP to really get under those notes. Even when sitting on the edge of my seat, if I am concentrating too much on the piano (when accompanying students on a song) and trying to show them something, if my voice is going to give me a proverbial "middle finger" of exhaustion, it will DEF be when I'm sitting. Just thoughts from a fellow professional who has experience with vocal therapy, and 30 years of training & experience as a performer and a coach.
There are people on this comment board who are blaming long tours and heavy schedules for artists' vocal problems. My response is: Floor Jansen. She drives her voice like nobody else, yet she retains her ability to sing with a clean tone. It's technique. I love John Legend, but his technique occasionally fails him. When he sang in the live Jesus Christ Superstar show, he was unable to make it to the high note. Proper technique would greatly increase his vocal endurance. I commend this voice teacher for having the courage to point out where even great singers can improve.
Matthew Galter I love her too lol. But you can just tell that when she does high notes sometimes, she adds distortion and it doesn’t sound like it would be easy on the cords. (Even though that’s her signature sound when she does high notes)
Ive been singing in my car seat since the 90s.. usually, 2 hrs a day, not always in traffic but... it looks like John was not working his lower abs. He just tends to lean back into his comfort zone whereas different keys require a change of the plan. I sat outside an open area listening to John from 200 yards away, the acoustics therein was phenomenal allowing John to do as usual. He sounded great with accompanying music etc. I used to sing like Ray Charles because I was a smoker a decade ago. Full voice allowed me to write differently, oft better, not always. I go like A5, A6... I can float about like Smokey Robinson but never like John Legend due to a diff in styles. Whereas Bryan McKnight allows me to mod his arrangements and make his songs better. He has a lot of lame songs, actually. Yet combining a bit of Ray Charles minus the raspity goodness with Bryan's best qualities could be a paying gig. Anyhow, John is at his best when adding to the fun of No Diggity. At his worse, well, we just kinda accept the bad with the good as with Lady Gaga and her Shallows hit.
I have to respectfully disagree. Your Adele video was spot on. I have been saying those things about her for YEARS. But this? His beautiful vibrato, and generally overall good technique suggest that other things are at play. Because even if you're fatigued or sick (or getting OVER an illness), the show must go on when you're someone like him. And desperate times sometimes summon desperate measures. These examples are not a regular occurrence for him. There are far worse male pop singers out there. I'm surprised that you chose him at all.
If you watch John Legend doing Jesus Christ Superstar, you can see how he handles 2 hours of material on the upper end of his range - pretty poorly. He has a nice sounding voice and is a better singer than most people, but like most pop vocalists, his technique should not be copied.
1- No Rhasp 2- No heavy twang for high note 3- No growl…. Just go ahead & tell him to stop using gospel influences 🤣🤣🤣 Not every technique has to be Bel Canto to be sound.
