A musical masterpiece. Doesn't matter if you're into heavy metal to Mozart and everything in-between. This is just brilliant. The vocals and the story of a mundane day brought to life in this recording. And the background music. I'm no expert so probably a technical name for it but it's so understated but so brilliant at the same time. Just my opinion but i think this is the best Abba song by a country mile and possibly one of the all time greats. Love to hear your thoughts and if you agree or disagree.
Benny is closest to the classic composers that we had in our lifetime. This song is brilliant due to the mixture of synths, drops and the haunting backvocals of Frida, who sound like a grieving mythological creature. Masterpiece to say at least.
This song described my life 35 years ago, working two jobs as an immigrant who came to the US with nothing, I was working routinely without aim, lived the single life yet still without aim, 5 years later I saw her smiley eyes in a night that changed my life. The very next morning I stood at the window and listened to this beautiful song for the thousand times yet I finally felt what it meant, I listened to my life in a song and I discovered that I am in love with that beautiful girl I saw the night before, fast forward almost 30 years that girl still my wife and I still feel the same feeling that I felt the morning after I saw her the first time. ABBA has impacted my life in the most beautiful way. Today July 2nd, 2024 we celebrate our 30th anniversary and the day after you came continue to be written, love is a gift that I cherish and never take for granted.....
The real miracle of the song, is that the man who wrote the lyrics didn't speak English as his first language, and neither did the man who put the words to music. Fantastic song, as is Andante Andante, their other gem.
People don't realise it but this is truly one of the greatest masterpieces in modern pop music. No chorus, a double-beat that comes at intervals that feel right but you cannot put your finger on, an extremely mundane story that actually is so powerful from what it doesn't say. The feeling of sadness in the song, a contradiction given the implication it is about finding a new lover. There is so much it leaves you thinking about - just wonderful!
Yes, this song is so meaningful. I discovered it right before starting a new romance and felt it was saying exactly what I was feeling. Then when that romance failed, it still said exactly what I was feeling on the other side.
One of the best songs ever written. Fantastic lead vocals by Agnetha, gorgeous operatic backing vocals by Frida. Seemingly simple, but absolutely genius writing of lyrics and music. By the best band ever. This song just never gets old.
This is my favourite ABBA song, but I always thought of it as a story of a bored girl finally finding a lover who will change her life. But I think now that the song is even darker: when she meets this man, she fucks it up and never sees him again. So her life changed, but not with a romantic happy ending. Great songwriting and so true to life.
Well why don’t you play it more often? That seems the logical remedy to that problem. TH-cam is open 24 hours a day and it’s free. Go on. Treat yourself.
This is January 2025 & this song of ABBA continues to be exceedingly emotional, exceptionally elegant, exquisitely expressive, enormously exciting and excellently electrifying even today. The lyrics are likeably lovely and laudable. The singing is like storytelling & at the same time singularly soulful, sincere, sentimental, superb, sad yet sweet. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
За такой взгляд красивой незнакомки можно многое отдать! При этом испытываешь небывалый прилив радости и восхищения по отношению к девушке. Жаль таких моментов совсем немного в жизни. Спасибо тебе Агнета!
They precisely did not carry on a little longer because of this song not topping the chart (Benny said that if THIS song had been a success, they would have continued a couple of years more).
Had they continued they would’ve came up with more masterpieces. “I Am The City” was a testament to that, on what was supposed to be their album after “The Visitors”, “Opus”. But “Opus” never happened. “Just Like That” was a masterpiece in the works but never fully completed.
This is truly the best Abba song ever wow! what a masterpiece! the mood of the song is so powerfull, and with it being the last recording before they split in 1982 it explains why, for a song to make you cry and hit you so hard is not an easy thing to do! well done guys i only wish this song got the praise and recognition it deserves, the video is also perfect for the song even down the the lighting.
The Day Before You Came" is a song that has always resonated with me, for a long time, as it beautifully captures the monotony of daily life and the profound impact a significant person can have on our lives. The lyrics, written from the perspective of the protagonist, meticulously recount the mundane details of their day-to-day existence, or at least, how it once was, and indeed returned to. This highlights the lack of passion and direction in their life, before the arrival of a special someone. The protagonist explaining their morning routine, such as leaving their house at eight and catching the train. This meticulous description of their daily life emphasizes the sense of obligation and the lack of excitement or spontaneity before the arrival of their lover. As the song progresses, the protagonist describes their workday, lunch break, and the commute back home, illustrating a rigid and predictable routine. The lyrics "I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day, without really knowing anything, I hid a part of me away" suggest a disconnection from their emotions and a sense of being only partially present in their own life, just going by, and by. The music video is also a departure from ABBA's previous work, which often featured the band members dressed in glamorous outfits and upbeat, energetic visuals. In contrast, the video for "The Day Before You Came" features Agnetha Fältskog as the protagonist, dressed in somber attire, riding the train, interacting with her lover, and driving home in the rain. To somber tunes. The individual shots of the band members sitting alone in an empty, theatre-like setting which indeed could before have been used to play a concert in, full of people, and now, empty, further contribute to the overall melancholic atmosphere of the video. As well as the shots of the train going by, and a sense of separation at it's core. In my opinion, "The Day Before You Came" is possibly the greatest love song ever made, or at least one of them. The song's emotional depth & versatility, coupled with its introspective lyrics and poignant tone, showcased ABBA's ability to craft songs that resonated with listeners on multiple levels. The song serves as a powerful reminder of how the arrival of someone special can bring newfound meaning and purpose to one's existence. Moreover, the song is particularly significant as it was the last one recorded by ABBA together before they split. The themes of longing, introspection, and the eventual realization of the impact this person has had on their life could be interpreted as a metaphor for the band's journey, with the members moving on from their time together and returning to their individual lives. When you also realize that they all were couples, it adds a deeper meaning to it as well. This added layer of meaning makes the song even more poignant and powerful, reflecting on both personal relationships and the group's journey as a whole. These different approaches help make it a lot more profound. This is a song that has deeply touched me, and i can listen to it again and again, as it captures the essence of love, longing, and the transformative power of human connection. It stands out not only as one of ABBA's most moving songs but also as one of the greatest love songs ever made. The song's themes and the music video's visual representation of the protagonist's life create a powerful and poignant experience that remains unforgettable. At it's core, the lyrics just describe a normal day most of us can recognize, but when you add the melody to it, it tells you that something more is going on here. This song remains one of ABBA's more less known songs compared to dancing queen, or the winner takes it all, but whereas those were part of their journey, i think the day before you came can be seen as the end.

back when it came out i think the feeling of the uk public was it seemed like a very tired abba song, people didn't get it. its only years later they saw it as the masterpiece it really is
Being a 66 year-old Brit and quite familiar with the Abba years, I always thought their greatness was best demonstrated in their poignant songs rather than the party songs (shall we say)
A total iconic masterpiece in music history. This song best describes what ABBA was going through as a group at this time and tells the whole story with just the beat. So sad considering this was their last song ever recorded together. It gives me chills knowing that Agnetha refused to sing this song unless the lights were dimmed in the studio and the air was just right. She even had a certain distance from the microphone during the recording. The fact she left the studio right after her last vocal in this song, not saying a word to anybody, and valuing to never go on stage again is haunting. Just makes this song ever so much more meaningful, beautiful, and powerful with how much heartbreak and talent that was involved in its creation. You can hear her heart through her voice. There is no music that comes close to ABBA. They are one of a kind, never to be duplicated again. Everything they did together was a success. And it still holds true today. I hope they never forget what they did for our industry and how much we love them. We miss you ABBA!
But it wasn’t their last song ever recorded together. There are at least 5 new songs, and Bjorn is not featured in the recording. Only Agnetha, Frida and Benny are featured.
@@Lyngstad72 I understand the point that is trying to be made. In 2017, I agree, this would be a reasonable conclusion. Not the case anymore. No doubt one of the new songs will be, however.
Yes indeed, and this is why I am sure that 100-500 years from now, ABBA will be regarded in a similar way to how we enjoy the composers of hundreds of years ago. They are truly unique, with an amazing portfolio of songs, never to be repeated again, and to be preserved for ever.
It must never be forgotten, that like many great and successful recording / performing musical artists, they had a great team of producer's and Musician's supporting them, a wonderful organisation altogether.
this is a song that i discovered a few years ago as i'm now in my 40s as i'm drawn to this song more than anything abba has done as it's a true late-career gem. i love how dark it is in its production but it's also got something that is just entrancing in its lyrics.
This song has everything:; hope, loss, desire, futility. I remember the day I met the love of my life, but I do not remember the day before. This is Abba as a mature musical entity. This song is amazing. Truly, truly remarkable.
But there are many millions who agree with you. Just look around at Y.T. Abba is experiencing an absolutely gigantic response! Greetings from Germany. 👋👋
@@steffichristina8169 absolutely!! I love how ABBA songs capture life as it goes by.. Love, friendship, pain, heartbreak, loneliness, the works. No band has managed to capture emotions so well. So relatable. Greetings from India ❤️
This song is a hidden gem. Only people who actually take the time to deep dive into ABBAs discography will find it. Nonetheless it’s one of their absolute best and it makes you wonder what would have happened if they had decided to stick together for a couple more records. Sadly it was emotionally draining for them to continue, you can feel Agnetha’s pain half across The Visitors 😢

@@albertok5715 Yes. It's their second last single and the last song they ever made together. It received little airplay and only reached no.32 when it was released in '82 so unfortunately many people won't know it.

OMG this song, the words, the haunting melody, the look's they give each other, the train on the bridge , it's just a masterpiece. Nothing more to say.
I can hardly listen to one ABBA song on youtube, without spending the rest of my evening listening to them. The four of them were magical but Agnetha will always be special to me.
"it's funny but I had no sense of living without aim. The day before you came." All the song is made for that, and that two simple sentences tell so much. Great lyrics.
It's about hope somehow - love comes one day -, but also about the sadness of the emptiness until then... an emptiness we fill with busy-ness and TV and reading and normal everyday things... Yet there's something missing... and she didn't know until it entered her life... So the Aim should be Love. :-)
Their best song. A masterpiece. It’s eternal and here I am at 57 listening to it. Over and over. So happy they are back. I have been transferred with the 2 new songs to my college days.

@@leilashampoo1408 Sadly as the 80s came, both couples divorced and the ABBA craze of the 70s had started to fade.
Had they continued they would’ve came up with more masterpieces. “I Am The City” was a testament to that, on what was supposed to be their album after “The Visitors”, “Opus”. But “Opus” never happened. “Just Like That” was a masterpiece in the works but never fully completed.
@@leilashampoo1408 but they were also also going in different directions and the public did not appreshiate the album at the time
I love ABBA for ever ❤
This is truly the best Abba song ever wow! what a masterpiece! the mood of the song is so powerfull, and with it being the last recording before they split in 1982 it explains why, for a song to make you cry and hit you so hard is not an easy thing to do! well done guys i only wish this song got the praise and recognition it deserves, the video is also perfect for the song even down the the lighting.
Слышится полный трагизм в отношениях, терзания и страдания души, невозможно передать это чувство, когда слова так гармонично ложатся на мелодию.
ABBA didn't split they took a break in January 1983 it was a hiatus they never officially split
ABBA the Best yes VOL.....

Best ABBA song ever.... Its classical....stunningly beautiful....
Солидарна с вами ! Спасибо за анализ , сказано точно !👌
So close to connect the philosophical text with the style of disco music was not possible before the group ABBA no one.

It's a shame this song didn't get more recognition because it's clearly one of their best.
Ok but how many 'best' do they have?.
@@a.berurier639 A lot
for me it is the sadest
back when it came out i think the feeling of the uk public was it seemed like a very tired abba song, people didn't get it. its only years later they saw it as the masterpiece it really is
Their unrecognised masterpiece.
Being a 66 year-old Brit and quite familiar with the Abba years, I always thought their greatness was best demonstrated in their poignant songs rather than the party songs (shall we say)
Oh yes absolutely.
Spot on
Yes true, Oh God ! The lirics , the beat of the melody are killing me ...even after so many years, i m in my 60' s
interested to know what you class as the 'party songs'? upbeat like waterloo and dancing queen?

Jep
You’ve opened my eyes to another possible background to this wow!!!
But it wasn’t their last song ever recorded together. There are at least 5 new songs, and Bjorn is not featured in the recording. Only Agnetha, Frida and Benny are featured.
@@Clavinovaman this is really theirs last song ever

ABBA were musical masters. Their songs are as fresh today as they were when they were released. Such a great musical legacy.
Still outstanding after 40 years.
This song has everything:; hope, loss, desire, futility. I remember the day I met the love of my life, but I do not remember the day before. This is Abba as a mature musical entity. This song is amazing. Truly, truly remarkable.

"it's funny but I had no sense of living without aim. The day before you came."
All the song is made for that, and that two simple sentences tell so much. Great lyrics.
I was captivated by those lines too. They say so much, yet the song remains ambiguous. Great tune.
It's about hope somehow - love comes one day -, but also about the sadness of the emptiness until then... an emptiness we fill with busy-ness and TV and reading and normal everyday things... Yet there's something missing... and she didn't know until it entered her life... So the Aim should be Love. :-)
