The movie is based on the Broadway musical, “Jersey Boys “!!!
Pop is a genre that is much older than this sound.
Pop music is from the early 50’s. Popular songs that were hits and outside of blues, country, R&B, jazz and rock. I would argue that in fact each decade had its pop sounds by the crooners, chanteuses and the singers with the big bands and dance bands of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.

Frankie was dealing with hearing problems (that were eventually corrected) at the time they recorded this song, so he wasn't confident enough to sing lead on it. He has an amazing voice. Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'bout Me) is one of my personal favorites of theirs.

Franki Valli is the falsetto sitting in the stool. That cool sound you heard was guitar scratching. Very prevalent in disco and disco-related songs in the late 70’s.

  • @MrSwanley

The Four Seasons started in the very early '60s when the sound was still '50s pop. They survived the Beatles revolution, and disco, making it to mid '70s still scoring hits like this one. Talent shines regardless of fads, but this is probably why you can hear that mix of styles.

The Four Seasons career spanned over 20 years. Frankie doesn’t sing lead at the beginning or throughout most of the song, which was a rarity. Valli could sing notes so high only a dog could hear. One of my favorites that rarely gets mentioned is “C’mon Marianne)”. I believe that that song influenced The Doors song “Touch Me” which came out the following year.

By the way, Rob, Frankie Valli sung the title track for the Grease soundtrack in 1978 which was written by your boy, Berry Gibb. The Bee Gees wrote a lot of songs for other artists. There was even a Broadway Hit play about the group's history called "Jersey Boys". Here is a list of a few of their hits: "Rag Doll", "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Walk Like a Man", "Candy Girl", "Dawn", "Stay", "Ronnie", "Save It for Me", " Big Man in Town", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Let's Hang On!", "Working My Way Back to You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "C'mon Marianne", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Who Loves You".

    Hi,
Francie Valli & The Four Seasons were put together if I'm not mistaken by knowing the actor Joe Pesci he and Frankie were Italian/Americans and knew each other. Joe knew a lot of people and it helped them apparently.
Frankie was the one sat on the stool.
They sang Sherry Baby. Francie also sang Grease is the Word, from the movie.

    I hope that helps.

Pop music was definitely around at the time that Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons was around.. They had most of their hits in the 1960s. "December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)" came out in December 1975 and was one of the last hits they had as a group.
