I've watched these video's all weekend and yours is the best video on this topic out there. As a side note, this particular rudder has been discontinued and replaced with the "beavertail" rudder. I just installed the beavertail on my 2016 Lure 11.5 and would add the following for those who need to do the same: 1) the install of ALL hardware but the rudder itself is identical in parts and procedure. 2) Instructions that come with the beavertail are basicaly a parts list only. HORRIBLE! 3)The Beavertail rudder assembly has a top AND bottom bracket that sandwich the rear handle. The large pivot pin in the beavertail is actually a two part piece that fits between those two brackets and through the mounting hole in the handle. . The pin is made from a screw (accesable from the top) that threads into a long hollow tube on the bottom. ( It looks like one solid pin as it arrives!) The pin must be screwed off from the assembled rudder and removed from the bottom BEFORE you can put the rudder in place. Once the rudder is slid into position over the handle (with washer between bottom bracket and handle) the tube must be reinserted up through the bottom bracket, washer and handle and tightened onto the top screw. Hint: Use a phillips screwdriver to allign everything from the bottom before trying to get the pin in. Also,I used purple loctite on those threads as there is no room to install the clevis pin to lock in place. 3) Melting the end of the Up/Down cord and twisting it to a point aids greatly in getting it to feed though the exit of the tube. 4) The Up/Down cord takes a SERIOUS pull to raise the rudder. It is MUCH easier to pull if you press the right rudder peddle completely first. This alligns the rollers in the rudder with the cord before it is pulled. hth
Thanks for the info, I received my feel free 11.5 yesterday with everything installed (foot peddles and cable) except for the rudder. You are correct, the beaver tail instructions are terrible, I second guessed how I installed it, but basically did it as you said. I plan on adding thread lock to the pin threads so everything will stay together. I noticed how hard it was to raise it up, I’ll try pushing the right rudder peddle as you said and see how that works. Thanks again for the reply.
@@ddddsd20 Mashing the right peddle puts the rudder in direct line with the hole where the up down line comes out of the hull. Lining it up like that puts all the force into lifting the rudder. It helps but doesn't cure the issue. FWIW, I felt the rudder was sticking in the full down position due to friction between the blade and housing. I took the blade out of the housing and polished a little where the parts interface with 600 grt sand paper. ( It's just the one screw to take it and the spring assembly out) I also lightened the spring tension one notch when I reassembled it. Seems better (but still not great) now. I'm hoping it will wear in over time.
Used your video to install the rudder kit on my 11.5 Lure last night. The Feel Free video was a bit sketchy in places. Thanks for the tutorial ! Was wondering about the left over bolts/nuts until I saw it explained above.
Hey man, adding my voice to the other “thank you’s”. Your video made the installation on my Moken 12.5 much easier and faster than I’m sure it would’ve been otherwise. Thank you!
Great video! I'm considering purchasing the rudder for my 11.5 and heard the instructions included with the rudder system are hard to follow. This vid should make the install easier for me. Thanks for sharing.
o.k., my new rudder is in place. easy, thanks to you. the only hitch was getting the pull cord through. I finally got the idea to use a piece of the old rudder cable to tape it to. thanks again!! fun fact, feelfree put the adjustment screws on backwards. I had to cut them to avoid taking the whole foot peddle assembly off. without the video that would have been a nightmare to do.
Great video with really clear instructions. I still can't get over the really bad design of that rudder that when stowed is sticking straight up in the air like a dorsal fin. There is actually a much cheaper generic rudder that will fit and work for the Feelfree kayaks that when stowed flips completely over the rear tankwell so it's completely flat and more out of the way.
Richard obershaw yes. Does it feel like it hitting something at the end? Sometimes the ends hit the grommet. Make sure the metal ends are not frayed at all. If they are, snip the end off clean and try again. If they aren’t frayed, slowly move them in and out at the ends while twisting the cable so the end can exit at a slightly different angle. Sometimes they need a little love, sometimes they go right through.
Just wondering, would you say it is worth the 250$? I'm considering buying this for myself for christmas but don't know if its worth it. How much easier is it to control the kayak with the rudder vs. paddles?
Yankee Tanker Outdoors You can still adjust the pedals after installation. I found that the tension is thrown off if the pedals are moved and you may have to adjust the tensioner screws to have the "feel" the same. It is easier to have the pedals in the correct placement for the angler at installation, but can be further adjusted as needed since it does not change the length of the cable.
@@TheBassquatchHunter yup they are all different for sure, you could probably spend a full year of videos installing rudder systems. This video was the only good installation video I could find!
Stryker 2 the lure 10 does not have any way of accommodating an internal rudder and was not designed for one. It is part of the advantage of the 11.5. There are after market rudder kits that may work, but I am not experienced with those.
thank you for this video, it is so much better than the one put together by feelfree. they should be paying you. I know it's been said already but real cool gate. who is the idiot who thumbed this down?!
Best video of the four I have viewed on installing. Great job pal!
Thank you! I want to do a updated one since this one is so old, but it seems to still be helping people:)
Just got my kit for my BF 105. Thanks for making this detailed vid. Helped me greatly.

David Aguiar thank you. I did this video years ago. I should do a new one on the beaver tail too.

Great video! my rudder came today and installation was a breeze thanks to this video!

Does the rudder make a big difference for this kayak?

Bassquatch Hunter TV Will do. Thank you!
there are no instructions. I just bought a replacement rudder for my 13.5 and the "instructions" are on youtube. good luck.
Great step by step video I wish all things in life can be explained so simply
Thanks for the video install! I will be adding this rudder kit to my Feel Free Lure 11.5 very soon.
great video, got a unit coming for my bf 120 looking forward to installing
Thanks for posting this video. Made installing the rudder easy!

know that this is an older vid. ..... but dam good information and instructions! !
Great video demonstration. Thanks for putting it together
Kevin Main you are very welcome
Great instruction. Does the rudder automatically straighten when you let off the toe pedals?
Whiskey 3 no, it will stay in the position you last put it in so it will stay straight or turned for ease of use
What about the 5 small bolts and nuts that are left over (or did I totally miss the installation of these in the video)?
Brett Johnston those are not needed on the Lure application. The rudder system is made for other models as well.
Nice video, well explained...👍

Hey buddy do you know what that kit is called want to it it for the exact kayak
The cables will not go through and exit the rear hole on both sides. Got any ideas how to fix this?

TheJumpyBean it is literally a night and day difference with the rudder. From small adjustments to full steering, it makes a big difference
Thanks for the reply, I'm probably going to invest in one of these once the feelfree overdrive comes out!
TheJumpyBean you are very welcome! The Overdrive should be available in the next week or so:)
Got mine for $195 yesterday at ACK.com. free shipping, arrives tomorrow.
whats the tension-er for? and at the end do you just pull the cable and it wont go past the tension-er
Thanks man. this video made It so is easy To install this Rudder.💯💪🏿

Nice video!!! Watched a few others they get ya lost in the first minute.
can you no longer adjust the peddles once you install?
Yankee Tanker Outdoors
You can still adjust the pedals after installation. I found that the tension is thrown off if the pedals are moved and you may have to adjust the tensioner screws to have the "feel" the same. It is easier to have the pedals in the correct placement for the angler at installation, but can be further adjusted as needed since it does not change the length of the cable.
Very helpful in 2021 TY
I should make an updated one, but all the new kayaks have a different system for hand controls now and the pedal drives come with rudders

Does this work with the lure 10. I noticed your pedals are different
Just Revenant it works with the new lure 10 V2, but not the models before 2020 unfortunately
How much added weight does the rudder system add to the yak?
Tyler Wilkinson not much at all and it would not be noticed in anyway.
Can someone explain to me why this can't be made to fit the Lure 10?
Stryker 2 the lure 10 does not have any way of accommodating an internal rudder and was not designed for one. It is part of the advantage of the 11.5. There are after market rudder kits that may work, but I am not experienced with those.
