  • The final conclusion to my experience of the Durafly DH100 Vampire.
    I have made a few modifications and solved a multitude of problems. This plane flies well and really please with it.
    If you fancy an EDF scale looking jet that is cheap and flies great this is perfect.

    I've done a similar thing with my 2 Vampires. Bought them from HK when they first came out around 10yrs ago, found the same intake problem and modified the side inlets, as well as large spring loaded top intakes on one and slots on the other. One has a fixed undercarriage and the other has retracts which have been reversed so they retract the proper way (outwards). Both sets of landing gear struts have been shortened for a scale look as well. If you switch the retract servo round (new mounts) and shorten the struts, you will find that wheels of the correct thickness can be cut into the circle where the std retract mounts, (cutting almost through to the top of the wing ) I have also reinforced the tail booms on both planes,- one with carbon fibre rod inserts, and the other with thin ply inserts, (stops any rollercoastering due to flex) One plane has a 6 blade fan, and the other a 10 blade (the better of the 2) and both fly very well with the mods, using a 4s 3000mah 40c LiPo.
    The original models had such flexible tail booms, that if you pulled up from a dive, the booms would bend down, creating a big down elevator, so you really had to be brave and give it down elevator to pull up from a fast dive. CGs were advertised in the wrong place, as well as numerous other problems (obviously not a lot of testing was done) Everyone ended up modifying them in one way or another. A video showing the top intakes and performance is here th-cam.com/video/RTk9GHIMz2U/w-d-xo.html if you are interested (10 blade fan model)

    Thanks for clarifying the CG. I endured a couple of very hairy maidens 😱- thankfully avoiding any damage - before I saw your CG sweet spot.
    The result was an instant transformation!
    (I removed my undercarriage and put the saved 200g into a bigger battery.)
    Cheers

      Glad to hear. Add some carbon fibre rods to the tail booms and fly it fast. Great value.

    Nice job. I just opened up the bottom cheater holes to get more air in. Watch those tail booms to, they're still weak where they join the wing. They should've extended the carbon further when they modded it.

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks.....I have added my own carbon in the booms and extended it into the wing......I added some silver tape over it so not so obvious but you can see it in the video

    waiting for mine to be delivered this week right now. the thing about the additional intakes is great to know. i do wonder though, could you add some holes that help directing air above the ESC to cool it in summer?

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have intakes top and bottom and works great. I remember chamfering the front retract well to allow air in there too.
      More air through the better, if you can add some discrete vents on the side then all helps.

    Just a line to say hello - How are you managing in Llantrisant, can you get any flying done? I'm just two miles from a really remote mountain top at Felindre,, where I test out aircraft, but the police have started issuing £ 1000 fines for non-essential journeys, so it's no go, I'm afraid, even though its just me up there ( I have to cross an M4 motorway junction, which is a favourite spot for the cops to lay in wait!) - 'haunt of coot and hern', as my dad used to say! Vampire still going strong, no problems, even landing on a relatively narrow road! Take care, Den, Llangyfelach.

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Den, Thanks for your message. No flying down here either. We are easily spotted on the common so regretfully we have been eBaying the lockdown rules and no flying. Getting loads done in the shed which is not a bad thing.....
      We will soon get back to flying...... when we do maybe a visit to Llantrisant or Felindre....I used to fly fish up that way years ago. A nice countryside there...

    Hi, John! Great idea on the alternate nosewheel 3-in-a-bag. As is usual with HK, it is now discontinued, any ideas apart from these? Diolch, Den, Swansea.

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typical HK.......they will come back in stock again at some point. Put a reminder on them otherwise search the others they have. Maybe the sky sword ones

    • @denismoran670

      I ordered one this morning, John. I also ordered a Skysword leg to replace the 'stiffy' on the stock one. I won't be getting to it anytime soon, though.
      I have a trip on my scooter planned (through Europe to Western Turkey), and will use the Vampire as a 'treat' when I get back, which should be around the end of June. I will try to get up to the common before then. Is it over by the Mint? Den.

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@denismoran670 Yes....from the mint drive across the common road and just before you get to the old town of Llantrisant you turn left and the flying site is just after a little hump back bridge. Park on the left and flying site is up the rise on the right

      Hi, John - just a quickie to let you know that I maidened the Vampire yesterday. It took off gently with no elevator, catching me by surprise, then flew beautifully with little trimming. Thanks to your advice, the C of G was spot-on, and this, I believe, made the flight easy, a pleasure to fly. I should have paid more attention to HK's product video, though, because she floated for ages on landing! The front nose leg is ok, but a run into the grass at the edge of the road means a glue-back. Also, the UBEC performed without a hitch, so, thanks to you, a great experience. Diolch, butt, Den
      P.S. still trying to get to Ll.common, but bsitting has now extended to all-dayers, so no chance at the mo. I was hoping to bump into you at Much Marcle, but couldn't go this year.

      Blwyddyn newd dda, John, and thanks for you advice in 2019. Given the inclement weather, little chance to fly the Vampire at the moment, but I have located a quiet upland crossroads with little traffic at Felindre, and a great view of the sea! I'm getting into building foamies from plans (Mako seaplane/all terrain) and HK kits, notably the flat pack ones. My favourite is the 'Artic Cat' which is really cheap and a delight to fly! What about you? Any plans for new aircraft etc.? Happy flying in 2020, Den

      mazpr2025 there is an access panel. But to avoid gluing it in then remove it before gluing the wings in place. Most people glue the wings and forget this gluing it unintentionally

    Hi did you do your C+G with the plane upside down as i'm a little confused as I was lead to believe that you do low wing planes upside down but your checking yours the right way up

    • @TWSreviews
      @TWSreviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's easier to balance with the mass hanging below the balance point otherwise it is a toppling point and harder to balance. However the wings have dihedral therefore the mass is pretty central so either way will do with this plane. I do prefer to do it the right way up....
