Great video. Great advice. I will be sharing. I encourage people to get 5 gallon buckets. I use a solder gun to melt holes in the bottom. Raise 1 tomato plant in one, 1 potato in another. Lettuce in another, Green beans in another. Pepper plants in another and so on. A person can raise a lot of food in 5 gallon buckets. Keep by windows, patio sliders or get energy efficient plant lights to keep the plants growing well. I listened to a young fella who raised quail in his apartment bedroom (he slept in living room). He kept it clean so that no one knew he did that. He sold eggs and quail meat. Eventually, he sold enough to buy his own 3 bedroom home with a huge yard. We can do self-sustaining things and create a lifestyle that is wholistic and beneficial if we want to.

I’m currently a college student living in a dorm but one day I do want to have my own apartment. I find it difficult to figure out how to homestead especially with having to buy land as well as building things so I’m so happy that someone finally is sharing a reasonable way to homestead for people like me especially those who are in my age range that can only get an apartment. ❤

As someone who is also starting small, I recommend getting an instapot MAX model - I make so much stock from kitchen scraps that way AND I can can food in it safely! Multi tasker for the win! And I also joined my local BUY NOTHING group so that I could gift what I had grown out of and find what I need, locally and FREE. Of course, thrifting is best ! My next thrifting goal is a NESCO turkey roaster - for turkey roast, sure, but also for any large discounted meat (ham is a good one right now) cook it and preserve it RIGHT AWAY! Those bad boys are also great for bigger batches of sauces and soups - make enough to preserve and that is a skill that helps!

Another animal people can possibly look into is Quail. You can raise them indoors and they make some good eggs and meat. If your apartments don’t allow animals you can keep it at at a friends or families place in their backyard or something if they are ok with it and they take up little space compared to most homestead animals. I think it’s a perfect gate way into owning other animals like chickens in the future if you are unable to currently own chickens.

@@katharinefayeThat would be amazing! They are pretty easy to care for and I had pretty good success owning mine, I love having them around.

Make a plan. Do the best you can, with what you got, where you're at.

Don't rule out volunteering for groups like Habitat for humanity - those building skills are definitely useful for homesteading!

Omg I was just talking earlier about the fact that hardly anyone knows how to cook for themselves nowadays! Also, I have a like minded friend in the area that raises pigs! I'll dm ya her Instagram in a sec.
