    Love your channel! Have you had any issues with the reel bending if you pickup a mulch chip or twig? I'm running the little 24v Sun Joe electric reel and it doesn't take much to bend the reel and mess up the cut. I'm looking at ordering one of these in the winter but am curious how they hold up. Thanks!

    In past episodes you have recommended Jonathon Green Black Beauty Ultra which has a tall fescue blend with perennial rye and Kentucky Blue blended in as well. Have you changed your grass type to allow for low reel cuts or is the low cut not hurting the tall fescue in the yard?

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, no still use their grass, you can cut plants at many different heights and maintain health. Yes cutting low does increase maintenance, etc. of course. But think of Bonsai, many are full size trees that in the right setting and controls do well. This video talks more about reel mowing th-cam.com/video/08v-uOUDDCo/w-d-xo.html

    Works great! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

    Some of the sports stadiums in the UK and abroad also use Dennis cylinder mowers another British manufacturer. Dennis only focus on the professional market but are well made.
    Other mowers we also use in the UK to provide a striped finish are rotary mowers with a rear roller and these are made by Hayter, Honda, Masport, Mountfield, Weibang and other brands like John Deere and Stihl

    i,m from the UK the allett mowers are some of the best going. atco is also very good as was Dennis, now sadly gone. i would, however, not recommend them for people that are not lawn professionals. they are buggers to operate. take a tone of money to run and repair. but most importantly need a top quality lawn to run on. if you have kids, pets or a life. you will never have a lawn fit for these bits of kit.
    also most of the methods we use to look after laws don't work in the US as the weather is different. i have seen some really good tutorials on youtube from US turf guys. but what they said would not work in the UK. its just hoarse for courses. we don't do it better just different thats all.

    So I assume when your battery dies and cannot be charged anymore because it’s lifespan is dead, your just throwing your battery out? You can’t exactly throw out a battery, because you can’t reuse or dispose of the acids safely.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are plenty of recycling places that take these batteries for free. The alternative is gas/petrol engines which are fine but I don't think more eco friendly.

    Yeah.
    I'm from the UK and have had one f these now for over 20 years with almost no maintenance.
    I think they used to be called Suffolk Punch, which mine is.
    I have a petrol, but before that you could get them in a manual push version for very small lawns.
    You used to see them quite a lot in the 70's & early 80's but the fashion to use them disappeared with the generation from that era.
    Then rotary's became popular and cheaper but the downside was the overuse was f plastic, and when that breaks !!!
    Note of caution.
    You do need a reasonably flat lawn for these or they will leave scalp marks or g down one side of a dip and make it worse every time you go over it, so it's not for the rank amateur mower who only mows when they get embarrassed ever 6 weeks.
    It has a comfort zone which it likes to operate, so your out there every week, two at the most.
    But you do get the reward of a lawn better than your living room carpet eventually.
    Good choice of lawn type as well, we in the U.K. Use fine fescue lawns for the look I think your all referring to, bowling green style, very different to the cabbage that you call grass in the U.S. (no disrespect intended, I understand why it's used).
    Hope that was useful..

    Nice video. However, our weather doesn't stink and the majority use rotary mowers. Reel mowers are in use but they aren't as common as you indicate at least not by home owners.
    The rules in place for herbicides and fungicides were imposed on us largely by the EU.
    Sure we can't grow Bermuda or other warm season grasses, we also don't have the wide variety of KBG as the US.

    These quality mowers cost a bit up front but, unlike cheaper (usually Chinese) kit, they last, they do a good job and they're worth repairing if something goes wrong. In any trade, its not wasted money to buy the best tools.

    Toro makes walk behind reel mowers, I worked for a golf course as a teenager. We mowed greens with them . Takes alot of maintenance to keep grass like a carpet. Need to use Bermuda bent grass also. You'll never get Kentucky blue grass to grow in thick and short like a green or the lawns they show in England

From a recent UK service dealer conference they are assuming that in a few years time the generations of millennials and the generation after (generation X)won't really bother with petrol engines as they are already used to plugging in phones in and are more environmentally conscious.

    Thing is, Most brits don't use reel mowers, those that do probably aren't Alletts because they're pricey (most people spend £50 ($80~) on a cheap off brand electric) and complain why their lawns look bad. When I see Americans talking about the fact we don't use like 460789 chemicals on our lawns (which including PAINTING grass which is the most bs thing I've heard), they're shocked that actually, taking care of it like any plant will do the trick. Aerate, hydrate, cylinder cut, that'll do.

    I live in the UK and use an allett 43 and love it. It is unusual for home users to use anything other than a rotary mower over here due to the cost of real mowers in general and battery mowers in particular. I have yet to find another allett owner near me or within my circle of friends, that how uncommon they are outside of public parks and sports grounds. I have found that I still need my rotary mower as well as the allett to get the grass down to a level the allett can handle if you have been unable to cut for any reason. Allet sells wheel attachments to handle long grass but to be honest, they are not very good, and when the grass is long the machine stops and blocks - a real pain in the but. I am a lawn geek and cut my grass every day, weather permitting and the allett gives a perfect finish with a good and well-defined stripe. I have upgraded to the higher number of blades for the cartage and it has been well worth it. I have a lot of other accessories and these all do the jobs they have been designed for. The lawn rake is excellent as is the crosscut attachment.

    • @ALLETTMOWERSUK
      @ALLETTMOWERSUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      cylinder mowers aren't for cutting long grass- the wheels are to use in an emergency so you can cut your lawn and the put the roller back on when its manageable- saves you having a rotary in the garage. Most customers cut 3x a week so the lawn never gets away from them

    How dare you say that the English weather stinks !!I am here - in Sussex - (May 2020) and we have had no rain for 3 weeks and it has been over 75 degrees F every day. My lawn is looking good - well striped - and well watered with a sprinkler every evening. A good lawn is about care with watering and with good cutting machinery - my Atco 30 inch cyilnider and Countax rotary tractor with brush collector/roller gives perfect 30 inch stripes and makes for an attractive lawn of over an acre. Don't knock the weather - we need all types for a good garden - it simply needs care and attention . No substitute for care.

    Got jack shit here in Sweden.. The only weed killer you can use are not meant to be used on the lawn. It's for the weed on your driveway. It kills grass if you use it on your lawn. the only lawn weed control I can do is hand pick the biggest weeds, cut twice a week, fertilize and then pray the grass kills the smaller weeds you find.
    I get so jealous looking at all the US channels where they just go over and spray the entire lawn and boom. weeds gone

    I don't own a cylinder/reel mower and my grass is always green. Our secret in the UK is not the mowers it's the awful weather as you put it.
    Rain, rain and more rain.
    If we don't water the lawn in the summer it soon goes yellow.
    The amount of rain we get also means we use different grass varieties in the UK to the US.
    The grass blades are thinner and softer.

      I sold the Swardman earlier this year. The Swardman is a good machine but the Allett has some stand out advantages, a dealer network across the US, price is significantly lower, the battery is user replaceable and uses standard type that can be bought elsewhere and Allett has made these since the 70s so they have a lot of experience and likely will be around for a long time ahead.

    Atco, and Hayter are two other premium well known brands used here in the UK. Although having said that, any decent cylinder mower will work wonders.
    I've been treating lawns for 20 years and quite proud of my own. I also share tips in my channel.
    My own set up are two low end commercial mowers, just your regular mowers made by Stihl around £250 ($300) each, which are used for the grunt work, and then I managed to find an old cylinder mower with large rear steel roller and small wooden roller for the front. Got this one off Facebook marketplace for a ridiculous low price of £40 (around $55). Its been my best find ever and cuts stunning stripes!
    Other than these I just cut regular and not too short and this goes a long way to keeping things nice.
