I used DeepSeek to analyse a poem (and here's what you NEED to know)

- Since the introduction of reasoning-based AI models like GPT-o1 and DeepSeek R1, people have commented on the prowess of these Large Language Models for analysing complex problems, especially in STEM. But I discovered some surprises when I used the DeepSeek r1 bot to analyse an unseen poem on the 2023 GCSE English Literature past paper, and in this video, I'm sharing all my findings to show how we might use AI to level up our literary studies and poetry analysis skills in innovative and effective ways.
Since the launch of reasoning-based AI models like GPT-o1 and Specifically, I examine the thought process of the DeepSeek r1 model in response to the exam question, consider what we can learn from the way this AI 'thinks' its way through a poetry analysis task, and reflect on the pros and cons of DeepSeek's approach to reading a poem (so that we can emulate where it's good and refine where it's not as great!) #deepseek #llm #ai #aiforeducation #gpt #aiforlit #gcseenglishliterature #gcseenglish #englishtutor

I am so glad I found your channel, your modernism video was so helpful, being very clear and precise while also covering a lot of ground, please continue to be a lifesaver for us aspiring literature students!
Thanks for letting me know and making my day! I try my best - what are your thoughts on using AI for lit learning though? I'd like to know - feel free to share :)
Thanks for the very informative information. It makes me wonder about many things.
Good to know you found it thought-provoking! Please feel free to share :)
@JenChan , I am embarrassed at my grammar. Thanks for responding.
Very interesting. I didn't even know Chat GPT had a reasoning model so thanks so much. I've just gone through the same process with Chat GPT 01 and actually I think it is capable of writing grade 9 answers.
I think you are slightly overestimating the ability of an average 16 year old.
Haha fair enough... I think you are right in terms of GPT being able to produce - literally - Grade 9 answers. But perhaps I was using the term 'Grade 9' metonymically (ha!) as a stand-in for the best sort of literary analysis, regardless of GCSE / AL / exam rubrics etc.
I get your what you’re saying about students still being able to produce more original analysis.
But considering the wealth of information online isn’t having a significant impact on the quality of students’ essays-at least for GCSE English-I’m sceptical that AI will have a huge impact.
A quote from Stephen Fry comes to mind. He says people will claim they don’t know literature because they were taught badly in school, yet we live in a rich Information Age in which they can easily educate themselves.
He compares these sorts of people to being like beggars, complaining that they don’t have money when they’re surrounded by gold:
‘Picture the world as being a city whose pavements are covered a foot deep in gold coins. You have to wade through them to make progress. Their clinking and rattling fills the air. Imagine that you met a beggar in such a city.
‘Please, give me something. I am penniless.’
‘But look around you,’ you would shout. ‘There is gold enough to last you your whole life. All you have to do is to bend down and pick it up!’
He concludes it’s a lack of curiosity that’s the problem. I agree and think even with the increased ease of retrieving information with AI, the vast majority of students won’t stretch out their fingertips.
I’m not trying to be deliberately negative. I just suspect most students won’t engage much with AI. The students who watch your videos will because they are curious but most don’t care enough about literature.
So then those who do use AI will have an even greater advantage!
@@JenChan yeah, I get that and I think we should encourage our students to write even more original, personal and thought provoking essays. But I suspect it will only be top grade students who really engage with AI at least in the short term to their advantage!
