- After Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever being beaten by New York Liberty 66-102, head coach Christie Sides suggests that she needs five who can defend. She said to press, "I've got to find five that will get out there and defend, defend without fouling." This was to point out her team's weakness in regards to this. This was Caitlin Clark's first game at home and there were high expectations from the 17,000 fans who turned out to support Caitlin Clark and the team.

Erica Wheeler missed so many opportunities to pass to Caitlin for a shot. She was always late to deliver the pass. I think Wheeler is a distraction. Sides offense is crap. No one is setting screens for Clark they just stand there looking dumb and getting scored on.

It's true the players suck. The center took 15 shots and only made 5 of them. They are all slow and short. The other teams players are much talker and are grabbing the rebounds. Wheeler is a ball hog. She had the ball and seen Caitlin open and wouldn't pass her the ball.
Players take the lead of the coaches. The lack of having effective plays is a coach's fault.
The coach needs a realty check . The coach messed up, not the players. The coach moved Caitlin off the point guard position. The Fever had just played 2 WNBA exhibition games where Caitlin at point guard won one game and lost by only 3 points in the second game. But the coach said Caitlin had "bad habits" at point guard that she has to change. Thats ridiculous. Caitlins is a point guard! The coach has destroyed Caitlin's and teams self confidenceThats whats causing their hesitation on the court, the mis cues, turnovers and losses. Thats the result of bad coaching.

She has the greatest score of all time on her team and she's not running the offense through that individual. Clark should bring the ball up and should touch the ball every play.
In my opinion, the Fever should have drafted Kate Martin along with CATLIN Clark. They had a n opportunity in the second round to do so but did not take advantage. Those two together would transform the Fever into the Run and Gun offensive team needed to compete with the more competitive teams in the league. CATLIN and Kate are used to a fast paced game and know how to connect. Last night was a disaster from the first missed layup from AB. As the center of the team she was no where near the basket on offense , and has no business brining the ball in. Her job is to be near the basket for quick scores, on offense, and rebounds on defense. Her shooting as horrendous. As a professional player she should know how to make a simple UNCONTESTED layup. AB was not the only player missing layups and other shots. I saw video of the players dancing around the court in practice. I am all for team bonding , but there seems to be no real focus for winning. Why were the players standing around on offense, when CATLIN had the ball. There were times when the Fever were playing Freeze instead of moving to the basket. This happened so often that the Fever looked like statues while one player on the team was dribbling to the basket. The bottom line is that this team has no chemistry, or they are sabotaging the game deliberately. Team comes first over individual glory, but if the current lineup, including the coaching staff are more interested in simply going through the motions instead of actually working together , then no amount of growing pains will be able to help the Fever to succeed. This game was a wake up call , that even though the Fever are young, they need to start taking this game serious, if they want to be contenders in this league. Attitudes and adjustments must be dealt with or this season will be a disaster.

I am new to all this, but I did see the last 4 to 5 games of CC at Iowa, But what I have noticed now is that cc seems to not take shots that she would have taken at Iowa, I also think the coach has got in All the Girls heads, by saying only take the shots that are 100% sure score, so rather them back themselves they pass, its as if their creativity has been suck out and had an injection of doubt, also coaching my way is the only way rather than use the tools you have is so wrong.

Let’s be honest before the season started we knew coaching was an issue. Coach is doing everything except building an offense around their best player, CC. In the NBA that gets coaches fired quickly. Fever will be lucky to win 5 games if this maintains. Fever have would could be a Shaq and Kobe, but the coach doesn’t know what to do with them.
So what are they suppose to do on offense besides stand around
The Fever should treat CC the same way that the Celtics treated Larry Bird or the Bulls treated MJ or the Lakers treated Kobi. Turn them lose and let them lead. It's how championships are won. And the Fever need a coach, not a pretender. Sides is in over head. She might OK in high school. Owners need to take responsibility and act or this season will be a repeat of last year.
This definitely something amiss here. It is like Caitlyn is alone. She does not good passes and it is like the rest of the team plays to themselves.

I had defended Sides, but Sides saying she wants 5 defenders is unforgivable. The NY game shows she didn't work on an interior game that could be explosive. Boston, Smith, Mitchell, Fagbenle, + Clark's IQ for dribbling, faking, passing. That + Caitlin's logo 3s, a 2-pronged, powerful offense. A good coach would've created that in preseason practice.

Coach needs to be fired, wheeler traded or benched and Boston needs to hit the gym, she sloppy compare to her rookie year.
There's a reason Clark's team got to pick 1st in the draft, and the Liberty are a championship caliber team right now... one player can change culture, eventually the wins will come if they build around her... time will tell.

The "criticism" of the WNBA is right so far. CC is struggling so far in her play but we all know she is smart enough to adjust and right her ship sooner than later.However the rest of the team better adjust too or this failure will get "old" fast. Slow play, atrocious accuracy ( couldn't hit the fat side of a barn if you threw a cow at it) even with open shots and butterfinger handling of the ball overall. Both teams but especially the fever. A coach trying to change a generational player's game, teamates playing like they're unfit and lost and losing their new audience quick. CC with Iowa had fast pace,great passes successfully handled and converted into points overall. And a "coach" who knew how to let her star shine in her game. Seeing none of that here. Better figure it out quick or this opportunity for the wnba to be relevant will "wasted".

Sides continued to push her "get the ball to the bigs" mentality. What good does that do when your bigs can't score in the paint. AB doesn't look like she did last year. Something is off. She looks slow, plodding and incapable of competing with opponents. The pick and roll hyped up so much has yet to appear. I can accept a loss when it is competitive. This was a sorry joke. Why do you have Erica taking control of the ball and sticking CC off in a corner? What strategy is that? I never understood Sides reluctance to play Grace Berger with any regularity. She plays Erica instead. Bad lineup decisions, loyalties to players you've had before, no clear direction on offense....the list goes on and on. You can't get rid of the entire team. At some point, the coach has got to go.
Sides is now .300 or under as a head coach. One real good player can’t make a team of bad lazy players good. Fever needs to build a team around Clark. She is an offense force and when these supposed grown women get over their jealousy and start producing then will they win

What A DISASTER! Coach Sides has proven that she has NO KNOWLEDGE OF GAME MANAGEMENT. I'm screaming since it looks like no one in the Fever organization has any idea how to run an efficient offense. I don't know if I EVER saw so many airballs in a pro game! Boston, who I thought is a great player (Never seen her play before I started watching The Fever, but was told that she was) can barely run the floor. They use Wheeler (who I actually kinda like) as the floor general, which is a grave mistake! They have a true floor general in their hands, but they are determined to ruin her! Ms. Sides, please please please, just resign! 😭
When no one on the team is respected enough offensively outside CC to make the defender stay home, she is gonna get doubled and tripled. That makes it hard to make passes for assists. Yet she cut her turnovers to 3. She only got 15 shots off because she's not being fed the ball. There is no serious rebounder on this team, and no big who can jump. AB has concrete shoes. CC had as many boards as AB. smh

As soon as I herd Coach Bluder retired from Iowa, my prediction is the coach from the Fever will get let go either at the end of the season or if they get off to a bad start right then and the Fever will hire Lisa Bluder since she knows how to coach CC!! But will the fever be able to afford Bluder.
It’s obvious that there is no power in the middle. They are not aware of the main ingredient and the others are just average. They need to step back and realize they are not a very good team. Whole team defense sucks and their reaction is poor. Cat needs to step it up and take over the offense and make them realize she can be a force. And yes the coach is weak.
Caitlin should be playing the same position as in college. They need to create plays for her and to get the ball in her hands more often. The rest of the team needs to get used to her passing techniques. Having her stand outside and doing nothing is plain stupid. They need to call out the refs that are making bad foul calls.

Such a big difference in offense. NY was setting screens, lots of movement and passing. NY was impressive, Fever seems simplistic with limited motion.
You really think that Caitlin had nothing to do with loss? Take a look at her stats and it may help to understand how she contributed to the loss. Don’t label her as ‘mamba’ because Kobe could create his own shot. At this level, the players are 100% better than college players. Iowa spoiled her by having every member on the team throwing up screens for her all throughout the game, she needs to learn how to create space for herself.

A few days ago, Coach Sides mentioned that Caitlin Clark, after passing to a teammate, would just stand there in that same spot. I’ve watched Steph, Curry and when he doesn’t have the ball, he’s running in and out looking to get the ball back. Does the coach have a point here? Just for curiosity, what was the betting line on the last two Fever games? Did the professional handicappers have the Fever opponents as big favorites?

Unbelievable! I understand the Fever are young and are already in the WNBA "basement." But what I've seen so far is upsetting! It seems to me that coach Christie Sides is not trying to develop the team to enhance Clark's (Boston, and others') strengths. All I read from Sides are public comments about Caitlyn's deficiencies and problems. I'm not saying that the way the Fever are playing is all on the coach, but I do question, as a second-year head coach, her ability to meld a competitive team with some obviously exceptional talent. How about trying to coach to the players' strengths rather than having the players change to fit your coaching style. What have you accomplished, "coach?" And how is telling Clark, one of the best shooters ever, that her shot is not quite right?! ("It's these habits that we've gotta break", Sides, May 10). Let’s remember Michael Jordan’s rookie season…Recall the Chicago Bulls didn’t take off until they replaced Coach Doug Collin’s with Phil Jackson; and most importantly, drafting Horace Grant and Scotty Pippen. Therefore-in my humble opinion-Coach Sides won’t or shouldn’t last past the Olympics break! The WNBA can’t afford for Caitlin Clark not to have her Stephen Curry moments of shooting about 25 to 30 shots a game-and yes I’m talking about launching 3$-which is her money shot and what the fans wants to see out of Caitlin Clark this year! Nobody cares if the Fever has a winning record in Caitlin Clark’s rookie season. Anybody that has coached or played basketball on any meaningful level knows it take more than three practices for a team to learn each others strengths and weaknesses and where they like to receive the ball at or the floor. If I were the coach of the Indianapolis Fever I would run the Paul Westphal offense (just run and gun and try to out score the your-the Fever’s-opponents!) Then during the offseason the Fever can work on their defense- and offensive sets…But, for this year… can we please turn Caitlin Clark loose and let her run the same offense she ran at Iowa-that worked… Iowa made it to back-to-back NCAAW Championship games! Therefore, the style of basketball Caitlin Clark needs to play has been time tested and proven. And I know her teammates won’t have a problem playing the Paul Westphal style of offense because of Caitlin Clark’s passing ability they would be getting a lot of layups and wide open spot-up jump shots and 3$! Enough said…Call Coach Bluder so that she can show the WNBA fans what CC can do in Paul Westphal’s Run and Gun offense! The WNBA can’t afford to mess this up because as Eminem said-in “Lose Yourself…Look (WNBA you [have] one shot or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, Would you capture it or just let it slip? These need to take Caitlin Clark off the ball run multiple picks to free her up like the Pacers with Reggie Miller and the present day Golden State Warriors with Stephen Curry! This is a no brainer…run picks and screens along with the Paul Westphal offense is the only way to go!

In Kobe Bryant's first five games as a rookie, he averaged 8.8 points on 31.6% shooting. His coach, Del Harris, was NBA Coach of the Year the previous season. In Steph Curry's first five games, he averaged 9.8 points. His coach was Don Nelson, who ranks second in total wins. Even the greats have an adjustment period to the professional ranks. It's no one's fault. It's just the way of things.The problem with bandwagon jumpers is that they usually know next to nothing about the sport. Clark will struggle. She is not playing Drake or Purdue-Fort Wayne early in the season anymore. Relax. She's not your girlfriend.

I have watched two Indiana games and there seems to be little sense to the offense, and the defense is horrendous. They have enough talent. What they don't don't have is a coherent system. That falls on the coach- sorry.

The other players have to move so when she gets double team the ball can flow to the open player!!!! But No!!! She is a 2 or a wing player sitting in the corner waiting for the pass that never came her way because the other guard that had the ball wanted to score and show that she was in charge but she had less points and assist than CC did!!! You need 2 tall player on the court at the same time, to many guards on this team!!! The ratio is 8 guards to 4 tall Ladies!!!! The second tall person needs to be 6' 5" or taller that can play highpoint post for CC to break free on a pick/ screen!!! I predict if this is still happening at the Allstar Game/ Break there will be a coaching change!!!!

This Coach does not know how to male any adjustments. If teams continually trap ball screens you MUST have counters to penalize the trap....(ghost action, screener slips/half-roll, back action and dive...or DONT SET BALL SCREENS) The adjustment needed to be made at halftime of the Connecticut game. The offense is awful...Horns is too slow of a developing base for what shes trying to do (post heavy). Sides doesnt know her best 5 are. I seriously think I could coach this team.....Defensive principles are bad....no baseline rotations, cant guard simple pin downs
Sides' resume is NOT impressive AT ALL. A first-time pro head coach with a dismal record last year, who is trying to meld elite talent in this, her second year? Just because she was an assistant coach with the Fever and Dream for a couple of years doesn't make her head coach material. Everything rises and falls on leadership. Ultimately, it's on the coach, for what happens on the floor. Do something about this GM Lin Dunn!
