    It’s 30 dollars during a half off sale, which happen often through out the year.

    • @TheNerdyRonin
      @TheNerdyRonin  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes they have a half off sale twice a year.

      @ and the flash sales and Amazon having a big chunk of their catalog half off year round.

      @LancasterDodd Again this has no bearing on what the points in the video are. Regardless of how cheap you get their products on sale, if another company has a better version cheaper, Criterion is no longer top of the food chain in boutique Blu-ray companies.

      @@TheNerdyRoninbut the sales happen so often through out the year that their full retail price becomes moot. Anyone who’s into the collection knows this.

      @LancasterDodd Sure thing, there new advertisements should read "subpar products at cheap prices!".
      The price has less to do with the fact they have become complacent due to having the best products in the past, now thanks to competitors they no longer have the best products.
      If they are your favorite great, keep buying from them, but in my opinion the conversation becomes they will have to up their game to win the 4K game.
      Have a great day.

    Eureka, MOC, BFI, etc. very often have better encoding, extras, packaging, etc. and cheaper than Criterion at SRP.
    However, living in the USA and not being region-free (blu-ray) I usually end up with Criterion. Shopping the 2 annual 50% off sales take price out of the comparison for me personally.
    I really need to go region-free.

      Very true my friend, a region free 4k player is an investment but it opens you up to buying the best products without worrying about the region it's from. Best investment I made as far as physical media collecting.

    The BFI 4k is a definite upgrade to the original BFI blu-ray. The original BFI blu-ray had a booklet & just the Art of Akira Kurosawa special feature with a trailer. The new 4k is such an upgrade in special features compared to the Criterion edition & original BFI blu-ray.

      Thanks so much for the comment and info. I'm sold on BFI for sure!

    Since I'm in UK I used to envy the Criterion Edition of this film, that was until the BFI set got released this year which is my favourite release of the year. BFI are fantastic when it comes to their releases!

      @TheNerdyRonin  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for the information. This was my first time buy from BFI and honestly I will spend the extra on shipping from the UK from now on! I love it!

    Just a note on the Criterion price: Unless you are buying direct from the store, you will never pay the full price. 7S was half price the past few days
    And the 4K rereleases always just port over the extras, I don't know why you are surprised?

    • @TheNerdyRonin
      @TheNerdyRonin  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Appreciate your comment. At no point was I surprised, my point was they put out a sub par product at a higher price. That doesn't count the 50 percent off sale at Barnes and Noble and other retailers twice a year. The entire video is about the BFI putting out a better product at a lower price point.

      @TheNerdyRonin but saying that Criterion are no longer a boutique label based on putting out a rerelease & comparing it to a new release is a bit unfair, no?
      Don't get me wrong, I don't really get people upgrading the same release from the same company just for the upgrade, but I gues I'm in no position to talk as I don't have a 4K TV.
      Sure, it's ok if it's one of your fave films or if it comes packed to the rafters with bonus goidies(physical) - which cost a bomb now. I just got the 4K Godzilla -1 which also includes - colour & the BFI Watership down - unfortunately only 4K

      I still think Criterion are the go to label & it has been a blessing since they started releasing in the UK instead of having to import them.
      Most of mine from them have been blind buys & I've yet to regret one of them. Heck, I've even bought some just for the cover art(Drew Friedman's La Piuson & Saniel Clowes' The Naked Kiss & Shock Corridor- plus he also has done the recent Happiness)
      As for 7S, I hot the BFI release that included 5 of his films for £20 I think, so never felt the need to buy the Criterion, IIRC many people think the BFI version of Yojimbo/Sanjuro is better than the Criterion
      And I will be seeing 7S on the big screen next Saturday 🤗

      @Stiffkittens01 My point was that Criterion is no longer the top dawg in the Boutique Blu-ray game, because they have become complacent due to name recognition. That was my discussion, not that they aren't a boutique label because they are. They aren't doing their best. And they are charging a huge premium for less than premium products.
      They have had the top spot for so long, so they no longer think they have to work as hard.. I believe this will cost them if they do not alter course.

      @Stiffkittens01 My friend, I don't knock anyone for their opinion, I just want to start the conversation lol. I'm glad your getting to see 7S in the theater!

    I only buy from criterion because they are the only ones who carry what I wanted and I only heard of them recently because they released what I wanted. Everything you’ve said is perfectly accurate to what I’ve seen and heard from others, also BFI has been higher rated then criterion on reviews (and I usually order enough to get free shipping because I save up my lists).

    • @TheNerdyRonin
      @TheNerdyRonin  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Criterion has put out great stuff in the past, but I truly believe that they are slipping. I made a video awhile ago about them getting in bed with Disney. That could be a part of this possibly. I had never bought from BFI but now I'm a supporter. Thanks for the comments my friend.

    Why does Criterion's release have no hdr? They do this very often.

    • @TheNerdyRonin
      @TheNerdyRonin  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Possible laziness or just wanting to spend as little as possible. No way to know for sure my friend.

    This was such a lazy release from criterion. It's all the same features pretty much 😮

      Agreed unfortunately. I will definitely be getting the Yojimbo set from BFI now. Holy crap!

    Great video! Sorry it took me so long to get to it. You broke it down perfectly. The BFI one is the way to go. Criterion is getting lazy lately.

      Thanks my friend. I'm struggling to understand the idea that just because Criterion has sales on occasion fixes the overall issue of laziness compared to other boutique companies with better editions.. 🤷🏼
