- Anathema have revealed their new video for the single “Can’t Let Go” from their latest album The Optimist

Voted ALBUM OF THE YEAR at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards
The song, written by John Douglas further explores the journey of the character of The Optimist in “Can’t Let Go” first introduced through their album A Fine Day To Exit. Daniel explains “The optimist is always held back from reaching a full potential by the weight of the past, a weight that lies heavy on the heart and upon the mind. Unable to cut the strings, the optimist flounders unless the past can be released and a new person is born. This is not an easy thing to do, even for the optimist inside all of us. Not an easy thing to do at all"
Vincent Cavanagh, who has worked closely with US based director Omeed Izadyar on the video imagery for The Optimist explains how the clip expands our protagonist’s story “This video is a scene in The Optimist's story; his vain attempt to outrun his imminent collapse, haunted by the ghosts of his past. It was shot as an immersive experience in 360 degrees by our friend Omeed Izadyar. The location follows the story northwards from 32.63n 117.14w through Los Angeles, San Francisco and into Oregon.”

Having garnered praise from the worldwide media & fans alike, Anathema’s eleventh full-length The Optimist, was, last night recognised at the Progressive Music Awards, where it received the prestigious Best Album Award. On winning this coveted accolade Daniel Cavanagh states “This was the one we wanted. Voted by the readers. I can tell by the reaction of the rest of the band that this meant a lot. The album was difficult to make and we put everything into it. So, it feels so nice to be recognised in this way. Many thanks to all!
Anathema, led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and drummer/keyboardist Daniel Cardoso recorded The Optimist in the winter of 2016 at Castle Of Doom studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals] at the helm and was mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
Having started already taken their headline tour, in support of The Optimist to Russia, Latin America & North America, the band begin their UK & European dates in Glasgow on Friday 22nd September - for full routing see the tour poster or the band’s facebook. The band will be joined on these dates by French blackgaze pioneers Alcest ( alcest.official ).

It actually made me cry. He tried to commit suicide in A Fine Day To Exit albums story, but he didn’t. He came back. Everything makes sense now..

"We want to let you know that unfortunately life has been very tough on one of our band members, Dan, in the last two years, and He has attempted suicide. He has has been under a chronic and profound depression for years."
"He survived the suicide attempt and is getting better. It’s a miracle he survived the last two years at all. He never left the house for a year, and contrary to theories, he was never institutionalised in any way and has never in his life had contact from the police, or the psychiatric services.
"Dan is a reasonably decent human being who seems to have become lost. Hasn’t been himself at all for years. He did go voluntarily to hospital once for a few days, to avoid the ability to commit suicide, but apparently the NHS facility was even more depressing. The NHS need help and we are pledging 10% of our GoFundMe to the mind charity.
"We are now working to bring something good to the world and Dan wants to improve as a human being and be a better man, and never do anything so stupid again. His doctor is also trying his best to prevent suicide happening again.
"He is under professional mental health care and is very dedicated to 12 step of addiction recovery, of which he is very active. Dan has been diagnosed with profound depression, daily chronic horrific anxiety, complex post traumatic stress disorder for 25 - 30 years, and he has ADHD. He has not been himself at all for 4 years now, at least.
"Many of you share this type of struggle. Maybe music is part of healing. Hard lessons have been well learned. This was the hardest. Lessons were learned. Maybe that’s why we have hard times.
"We wish Dan a good recovery. Obviously we were not sure if posting this was a good idea, but the truth is the truth, and perhaps it’s time you heard it.
"We truly hope all of you, every single one of you without exception, live happy and blessed lives. Yours in healing."
Dan had always been tortured a soul. With every album you can see where he is emotionally and spiritually. Frankly, it doesn't surprise me he tried.
On a personal note. I don't think we've heard the last of Anathema.

I listened to this song for about 2 hours on a train .Can't tell you enough about how I felt so inspiring and wholesome.
the first time I listened to this song was on a bus, I honestly did not expect too much from the music selection the bus offered... I saw an Anathema's folder and chose to play it. the whole trip was superb! I could play it all day long.

It also references WHBWH, as it's named after the WWI song "We're here because we're here because we're here because we're here......" because the soldiers had no idea why they were there, so they were there because they were there. This is played on the radio in the beginning.

Probably one my favourites from The Optimist and it was absolutely amazing to see them playing it live. The whole album is just awesomeness!

This is a really good song, that becomes a bit lost within a fairly dense and dark album. I have not enjoyed the new album, it has moments of greatness, but it just doesn't grab me, unlike previous releases, and this song didn't, until I listened to it separately and finally realised how wonderful it is

Sounds like sped up version of a true recording. Actually, I have slowed the video down to 0.75 (shift + [comma] is the shortcut), and it sounds perfectly more like it, more like Anathema to me.
It was my first time watching this video and listening this song. I now truly believe that they have intended for us to slow it down to find this out, and did really release the sped up version at the first place to give some sort of a message. Perhaps they are saying that we are so accustomed to rush everything? I don't know...
It actually sounds like it should be slower. Interesting.

I don’t understand… It’s like everyone understands something about this band I don’t. Fucked up. I guess I need to sit down and read the lyrics to every single album. I’ve listened to them for a while but I still am not getting the references. Which isn’t typically a problem. Anyways I will keep shrugging until I understand. Unbelievable...I can't understand how this band went from been one of the pioneers in the gothic metal genre and now this... is like a joke a but a bad one. Now this music for others is not bad but they should have change their name to something more according to this style.
