    I'm pretty sure I've said something like this before, but so long as your efforts to increase viewership don't divorce the channel from the reason you started it in the first place, or your motivation to keep going, then do what you need to do. Best of luck.

    The reason why a lot of bigger retro/indie game variety channels have that many views are because they were either imports from other sites when video content wasn't monopolized by TH-cam (Screwattack, TGWTG, Gametrailers, etc.), or they got in on the relative ground floor 10 or more years ago. Comparing yourself to to ProJared is like the favorite hometown greasy spoon worried that they don't sell as many burgers as McDonald's.
    I just like the cut of your jib, so I have faith that you won't lose your style in talking about less near topics to your heart.

    Successful you tubers didn't get to where they are because of the lack of success of one of their passion videos. That MMX4 video was great and I wouldn't base the success of it based on views. It's a 20 min MMX4 video, it's niche. Keep doing what you find interesting and the views will come because you're making them out of genuine interest and not algorithm hunting. Personally I want to see MM Zero, MMBN, and some more MMX videos!

    Hi Mr. Skellybones, I know making content and uploading it can be demanding and low scores can be discouraging, but you should focus on the things that make you feel better, such as the joy of sharing new game discoveries that you love and have a good time with, along with your phenomenal video editing and sense of humor, in which you have shown us in your previous uploaded videos.
    Taking advantage of this instance, I must say that without you even realizing it (or if you were aware but maybe you were waiting for feedback from someone else), you are building a community where you can share your passion with others, which means that your channel is on the right track.
    Try not to burn out: focus on the fun, take breaks and don't let the number define your self-esteem.
    Thank you so much for your content, the effort you put into it is greatly appreciated man.
    Cheers!

    I can relate to this so much. With passion projects, just like all videos, still follow youtube non-sense with needing to follow what is somewhat talked about for that video get somewhere. What I learned to increase views a little bit is to make the video topic somewhat close to popular games. Example: I talked about Afterimage and I made sure to make the short title include Hollow Knight for the short and the main video saying it's a "A Hand Drawn Metroidvania You Have To Play". It's a way to get people interested. Not sure if you want to try labeling video titles or descriptions like that to be found in the algorithm.

  • @arbiter771
    @arbiter771 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A good plan could be to appeal a bit to the algorithm and things with an occasional video or two and then use traction from those between to make things you like, that way you don't have to feel horrid about it not getting the full blast of the TH-cam love. You want a community that comes to your channel for you, the Skeleton friend that i know i subscribed for, and not for the brand of content you make that TH-cam blesses to the frontpage. Some people recommend being more community based, getting some ideas and seeing what your community wants to see via polls. Make a poll asking, what do you guys wanna see most? Then put like... Pokemon, Digimon, Megaman, SHMUPS etc all on there. Then use that to make some videos. Say Pokemon wins, make that first of something people would wanna see, then appeal to the ones after even if they didn't win and had an audience for em. That way the newer members get something big, and the smaller minority of Bone Zoners get their fill and you can make what you love. I've seen a lot of channels suffer from success in that way, a good example being Pokemon TH-camrs or a Moba called Smite. Both had a youtube i watched incessantly, and for the Pokemon youtuber, there was massive drama ages ago with a TH-camr he was best friends with and it made him branch off from Pokemon. He tried but to next to no avail, as the community he had wasn't just there for him, despite him being an awesome and charismatic guy, but was there for Pokemon. Sadly he gets a fraction of what he used to, but he still finds it fun to do. Although he does have another job now that isn't just TH-cam. The same exact thing happened to a Smite Content Creator who branched out. Little to no views on his more passionate projects about other things.
    The biggest struggle is finding the in-between of "Doing something that i want to do and am passionate about" and "Doing what would bring in views, likes, subscriptions, and such." and most usually take two paths. One being that they focus on one type of thing (Say SHMUPS for you, or more centralized retro content in general) and make it consistantly until a fanbase of that stuff forms slowly over time before a big video takes hold, or someone else mentions your content who's a bigger youtuber, and it brings in the crowds (Jacksepticeye had this happen back in the day with Pewdiepie, and now he's one of the most known youtubers from it now). Path two is the variety type. This has kinda...changed over the years as before it was let's plays and people just making random content on whatever they felt and people would watch solely for the person behind it. Dunkey after League of Legends type of deal. However most of those have moved to Streaming. I personally dislike streamers and watching Streams (even ones i really enjoy like Grayfruit) and watch the clip dumps and edited streams instead.
    I really hope that you're able to do something that you still enjoy doing, and not force yourself into making something you don't wanna do, or put time into. TH-cam changes for a lot when it turns from passionate project into a job, and it shows on some creators sometimes, to negative effects on them and on the audience. Keep your chinbone high, man. I really look forward to your videos and hope to see you staying happy in the time to come. Much love

    ProJared has started out as a part of Thatguywiththeglasses. Nostalgia Critic has set his career up essentially. He's got vastly different circumstances than you, not even counting the TH-cam landscape now and then. The best thing you can do for your channel growth is to "specialize" and be as consistent as possible. The narrower your focus the better, but that may and will get boring quickly. At least you've got a cool, attention-grabbing character.

  • @TorgoHiggins
    @TorgoHiggins ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some of it is just simply Online Content Creation™ becoming an increasingly hostile landscape for smaller and newer channels. Like, to share my own little anecdote (not an attempt to shill, I promise), I've been streaming on Twitch with varying degrees of consistency for almost ten years. I have a little under 400 followers. 350 of those 400 came in the first four or so years. Today, the only people that show up are a handful of buddies. Yes, some of that is because no one wants to stop by a channel that no one's already watching streaming oddball, long ass JRPGs and listen to a guy who doesn't actually talk much. But that's also because Online Content Creation™ has exploded and expanded exponentially in the last several years. The competition is fiercer, the standards higher, the algorithmic black magic further bent to fit the will of advertisers. The TH-cam, Twitch, and hell, the whole INTERNET we've made (or inherited) is not the one that existed a decade ago. The systems in place do not and will not promote me, and may even be actively, silently warding people away. Algorithm-senpai is not going to notice me.
    I offer all that I suppose less as encouragement and more as consolation. Your work is good and has only gotten better in spite of the numbers. It sounds like you're aware of that, but it bears saying all the same. I hope you find a niche that allows you to do find some tangible, measurable success that still lets you talk about the subjects you're really passionate about. Barring that, I hope you can at least find a place where you can feel satisfied creatively and socially, even in the times the cold, hard analytics don't add up.
    It's a tough internet out there. Don't get discouraged.

    You've probably already thought about this, but one avenue that strikes a balance between The Algorithm and the ideal of The Bone Zone is to focus on NEWER indie releases that you find cool. Like when Pizza Tower blew up and became a hit, your review was one of the first on the website and so got a ton of views. Or do your retro reviews when games get remaster, like an Outzone review would have been great a couple months ago following the Steam release. Save your DQ6 review for whenever Square announces an inevitable port for modern consoles. Etc. It's still less surefire than you releasing an Elden Ring Review or whatever, but it's still in the spirit of your channel.
    Anyway, that's just my ramblings. Best of luck dude

    I honestly think making it big in youtube is just a combination of luck and dedication. Some people make it big fast and by chance, others take a long time in building up their fanbase.
    Your videos are fantastic and I'm always excited when you put out a new one, you made me a long term fan.
    But if you try to replicate what some other big youtubers are doing you might not make it as they did, because lot of them had more luck than talent.
    Imho you have something special going on with your taste in video games and a great presentation style, it would be a shame to see it go away in a shift to a more mainstream taste.
    The things that you can maybe improve on is bit more polished editing to cut out some of the fat in the videos, and maybe spam some forums or subreddits with your videos, or do more collabs with similar youtubers.
    Either way, I wish you best of luck and can't wait to see more of your videos!

    • @ASkeleton
      @ASkeleton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't plan on changing my style. Only improving it. You said there was fat that needed trimming in editing. Can you be more specific?

    • @Luka38
      @Luka38 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ASkeleton I just watched your Mega Man X4 video, awesome job! And in that video I couldn't really pinpoint where you could have cut more, it pretty much doesn't have any fat to trim. But there was still a bit of a feeling like it could be cut down even more, like it's longer than it needs to be. Then I realized it wasn't about the editing, it was more in the speed of your voice while reading text. It is a bit slow at times and when playing the video at 1.25x speed there are parts that definitely feel more "snappy" and "to the point".
      Now this is just my subjective feeling and it might not be to everyone's tastes, hell maybe the reason I enjoy watching your videos could be the more chill down tempo.
      Anyway you don't have to take this advice to heart, it really is just a subjective feeling.

    I think looking at how other people make niche content is worth looking at. You probably can't or won't be able to make stuff like Sseth but he plays games basically people don't care about but make makes the video interesting, the game is mostly a canvas for his humor. Or there are people like mandalore, civvie, grimbread etc.. You should rely on yourself (comedy, editing etc..) over trying to appeal to people with popular video games. Even your megaman video relied on people liking the game, people should be drawn to your content because you made it. There are people out there than easily transition between games they have been playing for years because people just like them.
