- Ghana's Ministry of Health has launched a Coaching and Mentoring program with support from the R4D-led Health Systems Strengthening Accelerator. The program offers opportunities for leadership development customized to individual strengths, gaps and career goals. It supports health sector leaders by:
-Enabling participants to take stock of and clarify career aspirations and to define the leadership learning and development investments needed to achieve goals.
-Building a personal agenda and structured development plan to guide the learning process and progression towards career goals.
-Engaging in action and practice-based learning, placing greater emphasis on in-work experiential learning, reflection and ‘learning by doing’.
-Prioritizing both hard and soft competencies, paying as much attention to developing mind-set and behaviors as to acquiring the requisite skills for success in target leadership roles.
-Learning collaboratively with others, developing peer coaching capabilities increasing capacity to receive and give challenge, support and take ownership of own learning, while assisting others with their growth and development.
-Strengthening and building effective people leadership and management capacities, including enhancing team performance and enabling change to contribute to the Health Sector transformation agenda
The design and implementation of the MOH Coaching and Mentoring Program was made possible by the Health Systems Strengthening Accelerator program led by Results for Development (R4D) with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Accelerator was a 6-year project that supported countries to strengthen local institutions, processes and expertise to accelerate progress towards self-reliant health systems. In Ghana, the Accelerator supported the Government and other local actors to ensure adequate and efficient use of health sector resources to achieve Ghana’s vision of health for all. As part of this partnership, the Accelerator supported the Ministry of Health with the roll-out of the first year of the MOH Coaching and Mentoring Program. It is also supported the Ministry as it built sustainability strategies to further embed and institutionalize this program for subsequent years.
