I hope they keep it off the roads before some one is killed. These old failing machines should be restricted to museums where they are kept away from the potential hazards that the general public are unaware of.How many people realise these lethal machines have a potential of boiler explosion causing death & injury?...
Hang on a moment, it was a modern car that caused this not the roller (the car decided to pull out in front of it). This machine is very well maintained by all accounts. Plus they all have to pass regular tests on their boilers too.
fuck of if you dont like 100 years of great british engineering go back to your iphone its great to see history that will never die these engines are bullet proof cant wait to go to the Great dorset steam fair
if that was an every day car, i wouldn't care as much, but because it's a traction engine, it means so much more. felt really bad for the old girl, i'm so glad she's back to normal. remember seeing them as a kid and recently a few years ago going to a traction engine show with my father, loved every minute of it, now living in Canada i don't see them anymore. wish we had more of these sole driven work horses.
The roller "Lord Kitchener" attended the 2014 Great Dorset Steam Fair, and was steaming around the main arena on Saturday. It has a borrowed headstock fitted while a new one is being cast (covered by the insurance, thankfully) to replace the one damaged in the crash.
Apparently, the roller has now been repaired. A contributor on the Unofficial Mamod (modelsteam) forum said he had been driving it in May of this year (2014).
What a shame , on two points, first that the antique roller had to have this damage happen to it, and second:, that the camera person didn't ( or couldn't ) hold the camera with a steadier hand .
The headstock broke away from the rest of the engine, so it wasn't colliding with the pub wall that caused the headstock parting from the engine. Maybe metal fatigue then and to think it could have happened anywhere. Good job a vehicle wasn't coming in the opposite lane when the accident happened.
Good to know its running again?.Next time it could kill some one, perhaps suffer a lethal boiler explosion.Old mechanical relics obviously aren't road worthy & should be restricted to museums.

Nice "potty-mouth"! Totally agree though. Too many car drivers concerned about making-up the extra minute they lost dawdling around. Luckily the old-timer didn't run into the pillars past Cleals! That could have been a lot worse.
+Raymond Ashby his wife is a bad person, Fred wrote her out of his will just months before his death but she managed to argue that he was " mentally ill" when he did so. So she inherited his things and sold at least one of his engines without consulting his sons first, luckily for them the person that bought it had the decency to return it to its rightful owners
I guess you're solo - clearly you don't know how marriage works. What's his is hers - and vice versa. And that's NO excuse for beating up a woman anyway. No excuse whatsoever
i dont know man that looks about as bad as it gets short of killing someone. lol. not to insult your intelligence i promise thats not my intention. and obviously i wasnt there .but a roller losing its front wheel in a public road and then the boiler aims down running all the water off of the crown sheet. suffice it to say that can be a pretty bad time. now obviously there was a good crew on it to take care of it and in terms of the life of the equipment yes this was a short amount of time. at least it happened in Europe if this had happened in the USA half the country would have lost there minds about how dangerous steam engines are and would stand in the road protesting about it.
Engines like this usually have a fused plug made of lead between the fire box & boiler. If something like this happens and the water level is becomes dangerously low the fuse will melt before the boiler does and douse the fire in the process. Of course this can also be a problem when going down a steep gradient so a good crew will always check their water level first.
Was there any information as to what happened? Was it a crash, or did the front roller break loose due to metal fatigue? It is a shame to see such a nice machine in such condition.
I love these old steam engines slow yes! but there is on thing these will ALWAYS HAVE CHARACTER!!! Such a shame this had a misfortune. 😮😞 & so pleased it was repaired to make more lovely journeys again. 👏

+josh D. Diggity That is not a problem! That is what makes economic sense. This relic of steam propelled garbage should be fixed for what reason? There is no historic significance in this trash bucket! If people want to see the ways of the past, books, films & photographs are all there to see. The wealth is in the machines of the future & this old bucket of bolts will do a lot to supply the materials to build the machines of the future. I am one of those who is eager to cut this old artifact apart & see it sent to a foundry for melting. And for me, to do so pays nicely! And I will pay to employ some people to do so. There is not one steam roller, steam locomotive, ship, truck, bus, car, tractor, farm implement, building or artifact that needs to be saved. Cut them everyone apart & send them to the foundry crucible! Then, "Charge the furnace!"
looking at the briefly-visible scrapemarks on the road, it looks more like he spun out in the switchback and KNOCKED the front end off on impact with the building
A question Richard which I doubt I'll get an answer to but hey ho..... when you write a letter on paper do you start each word with a capital letter like you have done with this description? Just curious. Interesting footage though as I know the owner of the roller and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Had to fast forward due the music.. then hide all the sharp objects in the house and give my aspirin to a neighbour for safe keeping until I felt better..
the driver should of hit the car . 20 years ago I wrote a 1952 legonda off with a clayton agricultural engine he also pulled out on me then stopped. I pushed him 18ft down the road before I stopped . o dear what a shame. saying that drivers now a days do go a bit quick with the steam engines when on the road, people need to remember 10 + ton takes some stopping when you don't have a brake pedal to jump on & it's even harder to stop when it starts to slide on tarmac. good luck with the re build
The band brake works off one rear roll, the only way to do a controlled descent is skotching to place a big chock in front of one rear roll , the Late Great Fred Dibnah did that to slow and bring to a skidding stop his Aveling Roller, it worked.
It's extremely easy if you have smooth steel wheels, a steep hill, nothing but a handbrake on the rear wheels only that must be wound on with a wheel, & a selfish impatient car driver pulling out on you without warning, simply because saving 10 seconds of his waiting time is more important than other peoples lives. Years ago when I drove a tractor & trailer filled with 5 tons of soil, I was astonished how car drivers would accellerate to pull out in front on roundabouts to avoid waiting a few seconds for me to pass. Only the rear wheels on the tractor were braked, & even with rubber tyres, I had to get out of the seat & literally stand on the brake pedal to prevent the 20 mph 10 tons all up mass from killing them. Then later wondered why I bothered to save them.. The tractor belonged to the council.. & I wouldn't have gotten hurt in the impact, I would have just felt a large bump as they passed under the front wheels. lol

I bet the owner of the steam roller is not happy as these are very hard to get parts for, and i like the old steam engines and steam rollers.
Was the boiler damaged or just the chassis?
the boiler is the chassis
This is why everyone need to learn how to ride on vehicles that don't have a differential and ackerman steering

That would be cast iron showing it’s limits … crazy foolish to have these running around.
that's not good! what is he doing with the fire?
These people with Parkinsons love their cameras.
