I discovered your channel not too long ago, and i absolutely adore your work! Do you have any tips for making snes styled music? Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much! personally i just listen to a lot of game music and then i sort of get inspired by it. especially in the past, i would try to identify all the different kinds of sound i'd find in it, i.e. what i really loved about a track or a composer's style (can be a specific chord progression or a way to use a certain instrument). by doing that i "absorbed" those elements and learned to use (and develop) them in my own music. for example, the original sketch for this track was just the opening sawtooth chords, which i probably learned from some 90s vgm battle music (like, the way the chords descend and rise to give that feeling of danger). sometimes even using the soundfont of a specific game inspires me to write in that game's style - i remember trying out ff6/chrono trigger instruments and ending up making a whole tune with them...! (if you want to write music with snes instruments i'd suggest looking at some of the snes soundfonts that are available online and keep the 8-sound polyphony limit in mind. there are also some VSTs out there specifically designed to create chip-accurate snes music.)
thank you! i have made some game music in the past, mostly single tracks here and there. i did one for a game called Super Slime Arena back in 2018, and i contributed to a few Super Mario World romhacks (Il Maniero Spettrale, A Plumber for All Seasons).
thank you very much! i've done a few arrangements in the past (most recent is "welcome to isle delfino", both midi and non-midi version), and i used to sketch music on a midi editor before having access to a daw. that allowed me to become familiar with the gm instrument set, and i still like to use gm-based soundfonts. i don't think i've ever uploaded original compositions in .midi format, but it might be a cool idea to do one someday!
I think it would be! I'd love to hear what you'd be able to do within its limitations. It's a surprisingly robust format once you get accustomed to it! Actually, if you don't mind my asking, how interested would you be in MIDI collaboration? I found your work initially through your excellent compositions for custom Mario World levels (Cold and Cursed Cathedral are my favorites!), and if you enjoy writing music in that style, I think you'd find a lot of fun in the world of custom levels for classic Doom. The game uses the standard midi format to play its music, and similarly to how Mario World custom levels have evolved to take on a huge number of different visual and atmospheric styles beyond what the original game offered, custom Doom content is getting more aesthetically rich and diverse by the day, in both visuals and music - and yours would fit right in! I've already led two major-scale MIDI collaborations (look up the TNT Evilution MIDI Pack and Alien Vendetta MIDI Pack - you can find both on the Doomworld forums), and I'm hoping to get a third going soon. If you're down to contribute some tracks to it, then I'd be stoked to have you - do you have a Discord or email address where I can talk to you a bit more about it, if you'd like?
@@redngreen Hey, sorry for doubling up, just wanted to make sure you've seen this - about to get started with the project I mentioned and the offer is still on board if you're up. Have a good one!
@@cimcam9949 no problem, sorry for the late reply! sadly I don't have much time/energy for collabs these days, but I appreciate the offer. I'll be sure to check out the two Doom midi packs.
@@redngreen It's all good! Hope you enjoy them whenever you get a chance to listen - take care of yourself and good luck with everything on your plate, hopefully some time in the future we'll get to collaborate on something!

that classy guitar melody
Amazing, all the parts fit perfectly together, and you’ve layered it in such a nice way!
This is fantastic!

Woah, beautiful visualizer! The song's not bad, either ;)
Absolutely love this! Have you ever composed for any games?

How do you come up with chord progressions?
Stunning work as always! If you don't mind my asking, have you ever written anything in the standard-issue, general .MIDI format?
