    I've been doing this for my employer for past 5 years and just recently won our company a $10m contract. Currently working on a $30m contract, from PDM production to Bid Submission. I handle our GSA program as well. Been thinking about being my own consultant for some time now. My suggestion is to charge commission on invoice total, between 3% - 5%. Commission based on profit is murky. I've seen Consultants get stiffed under guise of customer not being profitable, especially if bid priced incorrectly (kiss of death.) Plus, DLA pays, on average, pays within 14 days now that everything runs through WAWF, an electronic payment system. I have to say it can be a tough and frustrating business if you are new to it.

    • @EricCoffie
      @EricCoffie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I agree if you can get the commission on the invoice it is less risky however not everyone will understand this concept in the beginning. But absolutely the preferred method.

      Yes, I am a VA contractor, on the compliance side. My company checks that businesses are compliant with the SDVOSB program. The whole system portal and interface recently changed. QUESTION:
    I have been selling PPE supplies to the government through a distributor (Battle-Skin) in Florida. They recently registered through SAM and asked if I would work for them directly in selling their supplies to the government. However, I would rather work for them as a consultant, so that I'm not tied down.
    If I decide to represent them as a consultant, would you recommend that I receive a personalized email & business cards through their business to keep it less confusing when I'm marketing to the government on their behalf? It would be kind of a hassle having to check in on another email in my armory, but feel it would be unprofessional if I didn't.
    Any information on this would be greatly appreciated, and I'd like to thank you for everything that you do because it has been a tremendous help!

    When you become a consultant and creating the contract for the company to fulfill the government needs, do you use your companies name with a DBA for the company that will be fulfilling the government contract? I am registered in SAM, but more than likely this business I am getting started with the government will not be registered and that takes so much time that when a bid needs to be placed they may not get registered on time to be able to have the bid in their name. Is this how that problem could be solved?

    • @EricCoffie
      @EricCoffie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a consultant you are a 3rd party. The contract will go in the companies name, your agreement will be between you and the company.

    Hi Eric, like most people, I love your videos and passion for helping others. I'm a SDVOSB and registered in SAM with DUNS and my NAICS & SIC codes are in medical surgical products and devices. I've even developed a specialization in Orthobiologic regenerative medicine. For example, stem cells can be used to regenerate damaged bone joints, ligaments, tendons etc. My MAJOR PROBLEMS ARE TWO FOLD: (1) I have no performance history and (2) no connections. I'm an attorney and Rn licensed in both professions in California so I have the requisite healthcare expertise. I just feel stymied and confused on how to get business. I had an orthobiologic company interested, but they wanted me to list 3 companies I 've worked with in the past before they would let me represent their product line. I'm also 68 so it's not like I've got all this time. I need a break. I'm a disabled vet and I've served my country and now I'm finding doors are being shut in my face by people who've never done anything for others. I admire you because you are very unselfish.

    Why would you establish a subcontract AFTER you've been awarded the contract? What if the company decided to no longer proceed with you but gets to walk away with the winning contract. Shouldn't this be secured prior to any winning contracts are awarded?

    • @EricCoffie
      @EricCoffie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You cannot write a subcontract agreement for a project that is not won. You can do a teaming agreement if you like. If you are concerned about them walking away, than that company was not a good fit long term. Glad you found out early. Find another company and repeat the process. Either way you will learn more than you ever would going at it alone.

      Not necessarily. If you choose a large company they will have staff that does the physical work. You just advise them on what they need to do and how to get it done.

    Eric, I have been reading about other consulting companies and they all provide accounting assistance. So they say that It becomes very difficult to get government contracts where billing and proposals are based on costs; So if they can show the government that 'hey our accounting practices are adequate rather than inadequate, that gives them a significant competitive advantage. Im not educated in Accounting, so does this mean that it'll be hard to break into this arena?

    • @EricCoffie
      @EricCoffie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are only consulting them on how to win government contracts, not on their business. Thus no accounting will be required. Companies that do millions in revenue already have staff that handles billing and proposals. You will compliment existing staff by teaching the specifics on the government side.

They are still willing to work with me if I’m able to offer them something that their not doing already. The jobs they got is mostly if not completely as a sub contractor under a contractor who won the contract and was named as a sub that they were using. Possibly won a few themselves but not positive. The one thing I might have would be minority female but I don’t think that applies with this. In that case what could I offer them then?
