STORY 1: This is why I always hid out before a shift, because managers always tried to pull this crap.
Hell, i’m a salary accountant and do this. I hide so my boss doesn’t realize i’m normally at the office a hour early because of my train. Some ask why I don’t head in later and it is simple. Parking space is a nightmare to find later and the express trains become sparse later on.

Exactly, I used to have two well known shoplifters, and I mean well known to the point that police knew them by name and where to find them each time we called, who would come in to buy smokes, but would fill their pockets with body sprays that they would then sell to their dealers for drugs. Well, one day I'd been watching them on entry to the gas station I worked in, waited for them to come to the counter to get their smokes, they would produce always produce a $50 for the $25 pack. Well this time I cashed out their smokes and closed the drawer so it was just open and of course they would immediately ask "Where's our change." I simply said, "The same place you were just a few moments ago picking items up." They immediately started accusing me of accusing them of stealing and said they would call the police, which had another of my regulars behind them chuckling. I simply gave them their change and said "I never accused you of stealing, however, say hello to X and Y when they come knocking on your door tomorrow morning after I check the cameras." Of course, they complained to head office, which just happened to coincide with them getting a knock on their door from the police. I actually got a call from the loss prevention officer for the company telling me that part along with the cop themselves later that night when he came to get my statement of what took place and a list and value of what they had taken.

I work in a pharmacy on a less than desirable side of town, most times someone gets caught stealing they scream about how they're being harassed, they're not stealing, and ofcourse they love to be derogatory as hell, then often throw their stolen items as they try to leave.
reminds me of a lady i met while working with recycling machines (i dont know how are they called in english, every store here has one or two so they can return recyclable bottles for a little cash) so since i was working i got a call that machine stopped working went to check yep too many failed scans, no big deal i reset the machine and go change the bags, 2 mins later it crashed again, i go there and reset it again standing at the side to let her recycle, i see her trying to shove bottle the wrong way, i tell her politly that it wont scan this way and give a demonstration, she gets offended shouting "DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO IM NOT STUIPID" and continues to try and shove them upside down, okay i just left next time she crashed the machine i just sat at the rest area and smiled at her when she was malding again about 10 minutes later she left i never before met such a petty person

Parents will often discreetly let me know they don't want a toy and I just put it out of sight before the child notices.
That's what I used to do, parents would distract the kid and I'd pick it and another item up, ring the item but sneak the toy behind me and into our side drawer out of sight. Granted they were decently small toys and the kid was usually really young so they either forgot about the toy or thought it was in the bag

These stories reinforce why I absolute, outright refuse to work customer service. I would not be able to keep my cool like a lot of these workers did...

I've been cussed out, swung at, spit at, slapped with a slim jim, called a Nazi/communist, and had the threat of " get my boys to come jump you in the parking lot" countless times for Litany of reasons including but not limited to, debit card not working, coupons not working, coupons being out of date, coupons for the wrong product attempted to being used, multiple coupons being illegally stacked on the same product, being out of certain items, catching customers in the middle of shoplifting, having a sale not go through or the customer wanting items on sale that aren't included and the Timeless I have to check your ID if you want to purchase cigarettes / alcohol (this one really gets the 40 and up crowd into a mouth foaming Frenzy)
I used to work it, for over 25 years, the last 13 years was as a midnight to dawn console operator in a gas/petrol station, and honestly I refuse to work in customer service ever again. By the end of it it got so mentally draining trying to fight the dumbass upper management that I pretty much gaveup and told them to stick the job where the sun dont shine. The wonderful thing was they ended up being caught out underpaying staff later on that I managed to claw back five figures of wages I knew they had been stealing, I just didnt have the willpower by that point to fight them after I left. However, as said I refuse to go back into any sort of front line customer facing position because I know if I do I am likely to either breakdown mentally from the onslaught such Karen's give. Or go completely postal on them with either me reaching across the counter and bitch slapping them or having a few choice words back which arent for a child friendly workplace, and likely its going to be the latter that takes place and not the former.
Honestly these people are usually the rare breeds, most people would just ask random stuff or something like you'd think while looking for the milk and it be right in front of you. But also roughly depends on the place, Walmart is less likely to have those people be dicks but dollar tree or general and they'll try to eat you alive for running the place they shop at

Yeah that, or a stalker, or someone that saw they're wealthy and wants to rob them, or even in the case that it IS his wife but he's up there with his mistress. Not that you'd want to protect a cheater, but you're also not looking to experience that mess.
This is a common situation and extremely common policy. The hotel would absolutely be liable if they ever gave a key to someone who wasn't explicitly on the contract to have access to the room.
She's right for not giving the number but she managed that terribly.

First story: In the US, if the business is big enough for the FLSA to apply, it would actually be illegal for management to *allow* someone to work off the clock (tho restaurants are notorious for making people do so - the same thing applies).
The place i work at is absolutely adamant that you are clocked in if you are doing anything work related. If you are not they will tell you to stop what you are doing and wait till you punch in. I'm going to guess something happened in the past and they do this to cover themselves.
Yep, and its fun to hear stories from workers, specially Walmart workers, who are either on their break, finished for the day, or day off and have some Karen who didnt like it when they got told to find someone else to help them go and complain to corporate. Of course corporate immediately look to disciplinary action only to find that they cant because the person was truly off the clock.
@@johnkacin1500 - Mostly comes down to the insurance side of things and its clearly worded now that you have to have been on the clock for their insurance to cover you. It also means that if a manager came at you, and you were off the clock at the time, that the manager would be the one in trouble for it all should they have threatened your job for not helping while off the clock. Any place where that happens you immediately find the HR and/or on duty union rep and file a complaint against the manager, even if it means them following you thru the store while it happens. You can bet that manager however high-tails it out of there the moment they see you heading for such a person.

Because it's one of the two going to happen Someone investigate why you are working while off the clock and either 1 or 2 will happen you get fired or your boss going to get fired. if you are the one who complained your boss the one going to get the blame if you didn't, the blame is going to be on you.
Just a reminder...if you see a maintenance person in Walmart; and as long as they aren't rude, please don't run in front of us, suddenly stop, block the pathways, step past the warning signs, expect us to have the keys/answers to everything, or let your little ones run in front the cart we have blindspots in front the cart or pallet and we don't want to hurt people.

Aye same with us stockers, if you hear wheels or something always be cautious of the blind spots on the end of isles, we may look like the pallets and jacks can't stop on a dime but trust me they don't. It can end bad many ways, you get hurt, your kid, the pallet falls apart and items break, or the worker get hurt in the process of stopping it and trying to catch the falling stuff to keep you from getting hurt. As a stocker I can say from personal experience stopping a huge pallet 4ft or more or full of cans hurts to stop and can, and in some cases, hurt us stopping so quick

I finally got out of retail and started working for a non-profit, and I have to say my mental health has improved so much. Like, I was always pretty resilient with the garbage that retail makes you deal with for far too little money, but I didn't realize how much the little stressors were getting to me until I didn't have to deal with them anymore.
I technically still have to deal with people, but they are volunteers and I have the power to kick them out if they're being disruptive, so I feel much more protected. That, and I'm part of a union.
Best part about the Jesus stigmata line is that unlike Gary, Jesus would actually follow through with showing his ID and inserting his card/paying for his room rental because “thou shalt not steal”.
Jesus is chill like that. Gary on the other hand... poor guy.

Where I work I'm CONTRACTUALLY not allowed to work before clocking in, even if I clock out and end up having to deal with customers on the way out, I'm supposed to turn around and clock back out again.
Not traumatizing, but one that stuck with me.
I used to work at Toys’R’Us, namely a Hybrid location with a Babies’R’Us. One item we had for sale was a $139.99 full crib sheet set with all the bells and whistles. It’s was this silk or polyester blend, a nice one. Anywho, so this one woman puts it in her cart, comes around to check out, and I start ringing up her items. It gets to the sheets and per the price tag it rings up $139.99 on the monitor facing them. She goes bug-eyed and asks me why did I add an extra hundred to the price. I replied that I am incapable of increasing an items price. I can lower the price via a price match or more with manager code clearance. She doesn’t listen and continues to claim I had inflated the price. I tell her that we can go and check the shelf together since I saw where she grabbed it from. She agrees, looking smug and victorious. A line had started at which point as my coworkers were busy. Over at the shelf I point to the price label which clearly listed $139.99. She freaks out at this point, claiming I had a coworker swap the labels to scam her, as her voice became higher and shriller, other customers in line taking notice as I return to my register. In front of parents and kids alike she called me a lying cheating (slur for an Italian) Bastard, parents covering their kids’ ears. I just stared at her with a blank expression, because I had realized my regional manager had visiting and was hiding among the customers watching. He sets his hand on her shoulder and says “Ma’am, I think it is time for you to leave”. She tries pushing him away screaming “Do you know who I am? I am the regional manager’s wife!” He stops and stares at her before uttering firmly for anyone listening in “Funny, I don’t recall seeing you in my wedding day.” She was banned from our store, along with other locations within his jurisdiction. I got a bonus on that week’s pay for having to put up with her racist comments and having handled it properly.
That’s a crazy person.

We had this kind Asian guy who would buy his store’s inventory from us and we’d enter some number to waive the sales tax.
We had three kids try stealing the bags of the Lego Ninjago Lloyd’s Green Dragon set after opening the box in a spot they thought was free of the view of any security camera. They wore bomber jackets in the middle of the summer on a near 90’F day! I got to watch them get marched into the breakroom and for their mothers to pick them up after giving them a loud screaming to.
On my first day we had this one lady run on by clutching her bag out of the store, the sensors at the door blaring, before she slammed into a police officer’s sedan that was in front of the store.
Even had a dwarf as my front-end manager. Nice woman, but would have to deal with clowns every so often. One guy even tried saying he wanted to talk to a “real adult” instead of her.

I used to work at an artisan deli up until a little over a year ago, and one night I was working the closing shift with a couple of teenaged part-timers when this old guy came in looking to buy our ham, which was on sale. He was a semi-regular who was well-known for being difficult and making workers cry, so I served him instead of the kids since I was the oldest one there. I got him his ham and weighed it, put the price sticker on and gave it to him. All was fine until he noticed the price on the sticker wasn't the sale price, so he THREW IT BACK AT ME saying "This is wrong". I tried again, same issue. Turns out that the sale didn't start until the next day and one of my co-workers on the morning shift had mistakenly put the sign up too early, so the price was still as normal in the system and I was not authorized to change it even if I had known how.
I tell him this, and he gets mad and starts yelling about how he's going to call the papers and tell them about our "scam" (lmao). Eventually the store manager came to talk to him and he proceeded to yell at HER for another 15 minutes. She banned him from the store, and threatened to call the police because he refused to leave. The sale would have saved him about 2 dollars total btw, he was buying like 1/4 of a pound of deli ham. Funniest thing to me is that if he'd been normal about it and if he didn't have the reputation for being so abusive to the workers that he made someone cry every time he came to the store, she probably would have just given him the sale price. She didn't just because he was a POS lmaooooooo
I never understand why people get worked up about like 2 dollars or less. I work as a courtesy clerk and when I was bagging this guy decided not to get a item because he couldn't get the 50 cents off. How is a difference of 2 quarters what decides wether or not you get the item?
We had a regular like this where I used to work, we were told to "just deal with it" for the longest time. Eventually he came in when the owner was filling in for someone else, and got banned instantly when he heard him call my coworker a bitch for telling him to wait while she helped another customer. The owner apologized and said he had no idea it was that bad, he thought we were just exaggerating.

He was buying a single stalk of broccoli that was more expensive than the advertised sale. the single stalk of broccoli rang up at 40 cents or something.

We give her the reduced price annnnd because she payed cash it didn’t even round down a nickel, not changing the price at all 😂
Here I got a short one.
I work in retail. I used to work mainly at the checkouts, so I was a common face to see there with our regular customers.
After a looong, busy shift I go to clock out, grab my coat and leave. On my way out I decided to pick up some food for dinner for that night, I'm already at a supermarket so why not? While scanning my stuff through a self checkout an irritated customer turns to me and asks if I could authorise his alcohol.
"Sorry, I'm off the clock" I say to the guy. "Can't you just do it? I've seen you do it before" he replies. "Yeah when I'm on the clock" I say back.
That did not make him very happy but I wasn't going to do it for a few reasons. 1. I'm not working if I'm not gonna get paid. 2. I can't do it anyway. The card we scan on the self checkouts was upstairs in my locker. 3. If I authorise any age restricted products while I'm off the clock I can lose my job; which I don't really fancy.
Better response to him would have been "Sorry, dont have my override card on me, its been given back to my manager at the end of my shift when I clocked out since I'm not allowed to take it home since its not allowed to leave the store for security reasons, you need to get the worker that is working this area or wait for them to respond to your flashing light."
The people in these stories (not the customer service side of this) make me really go the extra mile to be polite, neat, relaxed and respectful. It doesn't cost anything to do that except for maybe 1 minute more. I can spare a minute to not make things worse.
Honestly I try to be as nice to all the places I go to, still trips places like Zaxby's and subway out when I thank them and what not after they give me my food and I thank again as I leave, I was always taught as a kid to be respectful to workers and people no matter what, especially those that work restaurants. I mean they're just working there, and also they mess with your food lol. But nah it's just that they deal with enough bullshit as is, a simple thank you makes their day
I hate confrontations, but I had been in a few, and at one point I remember myself being so pissed off, as I hadn't anything to eat for the last 5-6 hours, and everything was just going wrong that day, and my friend told me afterwards, "I can't believe you sounded so calm and polite, while looking as if you are about to kill someone."
Same. I at least give a quick smile and a nod and thank them when I get the receipt. Always thank the people carrying my 4+ grocery bags up to the second floor now that I order them because while it doesn’t look like it I have balance issues and that makes stairs hard if I can’t hold onto the railing. It’s so goddamn easy. I’ve noticed that I make sure to do it when it comes to fast food employees, because I could never work under the stress they have to deal with, and then assholes on top of that.
Story 1: No, you weren’t wrong. You weren’t allowed to clock in yet because you arrived early and were waiting until the appropriate time. If Sara was so concerned about takeout being busy, why couldn’t she help out herself? I’m pretty sure she could, she just didn’t want to. That’s what I think anyway.

I'm not disagreeing on her being in the wrong, but I can think of why she wouldn't want to help with takeout as a Host as someone who has worked that job before: 1) she may not've known how to ring up an order for takeout/carryout, since that's not always covered in training for a role that doesn't deal with taking orders; 2) she didn't want to take a pay hit, since taking even one order for takeout/carryout opens you up to tips and therefore the "restaurant tipped employee wage" of (as I recall) $2.13/hr plus tips where the difference is made up to the point of minimum wage if the tips don't reach that value, and a Host is usually a non-tipped position that collects a steady and non-volatile wage; 3) since the takeout phone would redirect to the host stand if not handled fast enough, it could have been impacting her ability to seat guests (or cash them out if that isn't handled at the table).
This all said, some people can get sticks up selective anatomy really easily while working at restaurants. I know one dude who, after walking in an hour late for his very first shift on Dishtank at the place I worked at, literally walked out an hour later because the elderly server who brought a bus tub back to him wouldn't empty the tub out for him (which he requested she do). Was it wrong for him to ask? Technically no, but it was dead AF that night so it's not like he was busy at that point and she had other stuff she could be doing (especially since she was the in-between server who covered the gap between the lunch and dinner shifts that day, so it was close to her clock-out time already). Was it the dumbest possible reason to quit/get fired from a job? Absolutely. Worse, I got indirectly punished for his BS by having to cover his role and being made to do *both* the Host and Dishtank outs that night by the manager-in-training that was in charge that night.
Back when I worked at a movie theater, there were a series of "checks" I had to remember whenever we ran an R-rated film; stuff like when to ask to see ID, reminding guests with children present about the film's rating, etc. One night, a lady came in with her family, kids included, to see an R-rated film, and I thought it was kind of weird but I said my piece and they all had tickets so I didn't care. (side note, the rating is printed on the ticket itself, too.) halfway through the movie, she comes STORMING out of the theatre, popcorn still in hand, FURIOUS that the film she bought tickets for was R-rated and how DARE I allow her PRECIOUS spawn into such a place and she DEMANDS a refund. I don't remember exactly what I said back to her, I think something along the lines of "You're the parent and I assumed you knew what you were doing," and she apparently didn't like that because she threw her bag of popcorn at me and started screaming at me. I'm autistic (still undiagnosed back then) and the sudden escalation of conflict was terrifying, so luckily a manager (one of the cool ones) was nearby enough to intercept her and tell her to leave. I slipped away to hide at that point so I could calm down, and heard later that she and her family were escorted out and didn't get a refund. I quit pretty soon after that.

me and a (engaged) shift lead of mine (both guys) managed to traumatize a few other coworkers by having a conversation about lube. i told him he needed to use more lube, he told me i should learn to like the pain.
we were talking about lubing the components in the wendy's frosty machines, but we never clarified on that even now.
Tbh the only thing I think the OP for the last story did wrong was confirm that the husband was staying there, imagine there was an abusive situation like OP mentioned and once the abuser was told their spouse was there they either get violent at not being told the room number/getting a key, or they wait outside the hotel for the spouse to leave for some reason
It's a similar situation to why a previous OP didn't say if a specific person was staying in their hotel to that cop, only the cop actually has some authority (but acab), plus having the same last name doesn't actually mean they're actually married/related

@@bararobberbaron859 While you're technically right in a way, I think the real point of acab isn't that all cops are bad people, rather that the police system (particularly in the US) functions in such a way as to foster and protect poor behavior, to the point where generally speaking, cops that aren't bastards (which is already a lower amount than expected because the societal image of the police attracts bastards) either become bastards or leave, while cops that are bastards tend to stay much longer.
So, like, not _every_ cop is a bastard, but in the grand scheme of things, cops are bastards. (Unfortunately for everyone but the bastards themselves - would-be good cops very much included, though they hopefully just end up doing other kinds of social work.) The "all" part is sorta... intentionally hyperbolic, like in the literary sense, I guess? It's a response to people saying that individual bad cops are just anomalies when they tend to actually be very normal parts of the system.
I suppose the truest shortening would just be CAB. Not necessarily all, precisely, but the exceptions don't change the general rule - mudskippers are weirdos, but you'd still say fish live in the water, not on the shore.

I work retail. I was just threatened for the first time yesterday. A cashier (who is a minor btw) came up to let me know that some people had come in and she didn't feel safe.
It was her parents. Her father had just gotten out of prison and wanted to see her. From what I gathered after the fact, they were likely not supposed to be on the property in the first place. I tell them that I cannot make her come out to see them as that's not my job.
Her mom says she used to work there like that's supposed to convince me. And meanwhile I'm thinking, "You worked retail, AS A WOMAN, and you were never taught or learned not to give out coworker info?" That alongside the fact that I literally couldn't care less about that.
I explain that just anyone can walk in claiming to be related to a worker, so of course I'm not making the cashier come out.
The dad asks if it's because he is black, and thinks maybe I don't understand his daughter is mixed race. I am mixed race. Regardless, it doesn't matter, as she expressed that she was afraid for her safety and did not want to see them. I avoid saying anything like this to them, as it had the potential to go in the direction of "Well how do you know she said that?"
I maintained that if they were not there to patronize, then they would have to leave.
The father, lovely peach that he is, then mentioned he had a few guys that would love to beat me up. And I'm thinking, "You've threatened me, on top of what could be considered stalking and harassment, and what is almost certainly trespassing? You just got out of prison. Do you WANT to go back?"
Luckily they both left and nobody was hurt, but I'm still a bit shaken up. Easily the worst interaction I've had by far.

The new Zealand one reminds me of my current boss that gets mad when I don't stay after shift to check in material since i'm the only person that does it. But then if i do stay over he gets mad because I'm not supposed to get overtime. So I email all our suppliers and let them know they need their trucks in by 1pm and my boss got bad because "Now if they can't make it they won't ship till the next morning". I fail to see a problem with that since I can't check anything in till the next shift anyways....or maybe I can, or can't....or fuck, I don't even know anymore. Sometimes i think he just says random shit to have an excuse to bitch me out
They cant do that here in Australia, if you are forced to go back to work while on break, such as the place getting busy, then you never even had your lunch break and get to go on it again for the full period.

I have two myself.
1. My first day I got threatened to be fired
I started work and I had to learn everything myself. I was really thrust on to it, and just said serve people since we were busy. At the time I was a shut in so I was terrified.
Then I got told that I needed to go learn from the trolley dude who leaves in 30 minutes, how to safely operate the equipment at a grocery store. He gave a half assed explanation and told me that he can't help me any more and left. I almost caused 2 accidents that day because I had to physically carry 20 of those things (I didn't fully know how to operate the equipment) uphill.
So my manager called me in and told me I wasn't wearing safety equipment, a hat, nor was I allowed to have devices on me (I had a watch and my phone). I told him that there was no way i could do this as I was terrfied of causing an accident with my lack of physical strength, I was never told I had to do this in the job description.
He said "This is what you signed up for. If you don't like it, you shouldn't be here." and I was shocked. and shut up.
2. Every day I would get told "If i'm here 5 minutes early, I can start and get paid for it" and it worked.
My employer was sort of chill.
One day we had a stand in from another store and I started 5 minutes early as normal. And she was yelling at me saying that I shouldn't of because now she has to find something for me to do. I told them that one of the cashiers looks pretty tired (i was able to do anything and worked as a cashier most of my time) and that I can cover their break. She told me that if that's my attitude I can go home. So I confirmed and I left. They reported me for dodging my shift and got a notice of termination (1st warning). Told them what had happened and got it revoked.
1:00 thats why i like to work in mom and pop restaurants. I dont get chewed out clocking in at a precise time. Also free food and beer after work is a great plus.
Small businesses can be great. My boss is usually super flexible on things like taking time off, he gives gifts randomly when he gets stuff he thinks you'll like (recently gave me a bag of freshly harvested oysters as well as Mason bee pupas for my garden for example), and he can be pretty helpful at times like when he found out my coworkers kid suddenly developed really sensitive diabetes and some new allergies he reworked schedules so the coworker could take time off whenever he needed. Also he's got a hair trigger temper which comes in handy with Karen's because if they're being dicks and demand to talk to a manager and I can't make them happy I just direct them to my boss and watch him unload on them like Lee R Ermy on a recruit in Full Metal Jacket.

The first story hits too close to home. My wife and I show up an *hour* before work because we carpool with someone who clocks in earlier than us. A bit annoying, but we deal with it. If we sit anywhere the public can see us, they glare at us like we're just lazy asses milling around in the seating area instead of working. I'm not clocking in an hour in advance because entitled flyers think I should be working.
Case 3: the police officer came in alone to ask for info about a "guy up the street" that didn't come with him?
I can imagine the cop trying to find a runaway daughter or a cheating wife in the motel, using a lame excuse, or trying to find someone to frame for something and taking them away.

It sounds really fishy to me, for all you know he could have been an obsessive spouse or father stalking a wife/girlfriend or a daughter and him wanting access to the reservations was just a pretext to snoop around. Good on them for standing their ground!
Some hotels in non-US countries (I don't know exactly how widespread it is; I've only heard about it in Denmark) don't have a front desk manager to call. There is nobody to escalate to. There is nobody to be called over to authorize something. There is only whichever front desk worker, singular, happens to be on duty at the moment.
They have full authority by necessity. Don't anger them.
I imagine a lot of front desk workers here in the States would love that. "Call your manager." "There is no manager. Only me."
For the first story, at least where I live, by law, minors have to punch in no earlier than scheduled and leave no later than scheduled, host is lucky she wasn't written up for almost getting the company fined by the Labor Department

Every person that comes out of school should be doing a mandatory 1 year of retail experience before they are allowed to continue to university or into full time work in any other field.
That's like my job. I am a loader at a food warehouse, that is, I use machines to put the pallets in the trucks. It pays $70,000 to $80,000 a year gross pay, and I can listen to audiobooks or TH-cam the entire time and never talk to anyone

EFTPOS = Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale. It's term used in Australia and also means their debit card when it comes to taking money out since they have to hit savings or check instead of credit when it comes to the cash out side of things. Also, the machines wont do cashout on paywave which is why credit isnt used, the card has to be swiped or chipped in and a pin has to be used.

First one reminds me of something kind of similar when I worked in food service.
There was once I had stayed an extra 3 hours over to help a comanager through a lunch rush and to help with extra admin work. When she asked me to help give out smoke breaks (cover positions while each employee went outside), I obviously said no cause I was already working 13 hours at that point and just wanted to leave. She got pissy and started yelling about how she always stays over to help out and blah blah blah (she never did) and started talking shit about me to an employee with me right there.
Our store manager told me to never stay over and help her again, not even for 5 minutes. I stayed over 1-2 hours late every day to help out during switch over, but the one day I actually say no to staying longer just for smoke breaks because I’d already been there for 3 hours… I get screamed at in front of everyone 🥲

My memory is a bit fuzzy on this one as it happened ages ago. Anyways... My brother has a friend who's diploma is for working on ships. Long story short Italy has a specialized highschool system where you can sorta pick a profession you want to study for. And my brother ended up doing a few years in this school where you can learn logistics (what he studied). Basically how to run a warehouse. There's a lot of math involved in this. Or mechanics ie working on boat engines. Or becoming a captain. Now I'm not sure which role his friend had in this. But he was hooked by his father onto a ship. It was a totally legal and legit job. If I'm not mistaken the father works for a cruise/shipping company. Anyways he packed some stuff to do and went. This job required him to be for months far away from land. And at one point he had to go by (he was on a cointainer ship) an area that is well known for the high presence of pirates. Like legit pirates. It's in south Africa if I remember correctly. The ship has to turn off all lights and I believe their radars too in order to not be seen by them. It was definitely a scary moment for the whole friend group as they all feared for him waiting for him to come home safely. Needless to say he never took the job again. A funny caveat is that I gave him my Nintendo ds charger as he brought his own console on the ship to entertain himself during slow periods.
been working in the food industry for the better part of 3 years now, and it’s genuinely god awful, and after I quit my current job I’m not going back. Between the rude customers and overworked staff (because upper management doesn’t want to hire adequate staffing), it’s just not worth it. A couple of weeks ago we had some dude throwing food over the counter at us because it took 5 minutes to get his order out during the lunch rush when there was literally a line out the door. The manager had to remove him from the store.
Dude, I feel that. I did a stint as a Host while I was in college and it jacked me up. While the regulars were great and I had mostly good management where I worked (since they'd all been at the location for a decade+ at the time), the bad coworkers and customers just grind ya down, and once even one bad manager enters the mix it's all over. I ended up leaving myself after one bad night with the bad manager-in-training got my blood pressure into 300/220 range (likely to burst a blood vessel range). While I staunchly say that everyone needs a short stint in food service just to understand what the people doing the job go through, at this point I would rather rip up my degree and build roads (ideally as a union contractor so I'd actually get healthcare and a pension) than enter food service *ever again.*

Only time I work for free is when i screw up and forget to throw something out or wipe something down. I always do line check and make sure all the kitchen equipments off. Doesn't eat into my time as I'll be waiting 30 minutes for a bus anyways. I do it for my own peace of mind considering we had one of our other locations burn down.
Short one, but my store had a nightmare day once. Big sale day, we have it every month, and unforunately on this specific day our electronics go to shit. Speakers won't play music or make annoucements, Credit card machines and registers aren't working, none of us could clock in or out. Literally the only thing that was working was Phones, the Managers computer, and the machines for our job. Everything else? Completely down.

I've had a few really strange interactions working retail when i was younger. But one of the one's that stand out were 2 women came into the store during the middle of the night obviously buzzed (there was a waterpark 2 to 3 miles down that had a bar) so you could expect this. They put all their stuff on the counter one of them asks "This is for free. Right?". I started ringing up their stuff and told them their total. Which was about $30. The same girl asks "What do we have to do to make this free? "for a brief second i thought about it. Then told her "Listen what i need you to do is pay for your stuff and get out of here before you get me in trouble". There could be so many things that went wrong in that situation.

Eftpos in Australia too, & the keycard used with Eftpos is typically the same one you use at an ATM & different to a debit card, although eftpos can use any card it can only be used to withdraw cash(you can withdraw cash at any sales counter with eftpos if they have a till) with the atm keycard.

If I remember correctly, eftpos doesn’t allow you to go into negatives because you’re paying with your money, debit and credit (this might be where I’m wrong) allow you to go into negative because you’re paying with yours and the banks money, negatives just means the bank charges you overdraw fees
The Dine and Dash story... my friends and I did that once by accident.
Like, we were at a Pizza Hut by the counter and register. We were having a good time and talking with our server and everything and then left... and back at one of their houses, I'm counting the money I have to double check I did my math right and realize... I still have the same amount of cash I'd started the day with and ask "Uh... did we pay?"
Everyone else checks their stuff and... we didn't.
So we call the Pizza Hut in question and tell them we'll be back up in a few minutes to pay for our meal. They were pretty amused by it, admitting that most of the time "When someone tries to dine and dash they're trying to be quiet and in the back so we wont notice them. We were actually surprised when it happened."
We went back and paid, and it's just a fun story now. Not the same as the thing in here, but... ya know, it's a funny story. The one time we dine'd and dash'd it wasn't even on purpose. We just genuinely forgot to leave the money.
This first story. I have heard of a number of large chain restaurants that expect employees to work off the clock. For example, restaurant expects employees to clock out at the end of their shift, then sit down and roll napkins around silverware while off the clock.
There are places that will try this, but it takes just one employee that knows their rights or friend of an employee to hear about it for a report to be made to a labor board and get a silent investigation started which can result in fines for the business and repayment of "stolen wages" to the employees, though said employees may get fired once the management figures out who snitched
oh god, part of my responsibilities at my job is on the front desk of our hotel and trades people are ALWAYS karens (or keiths as I call them). We had the same ID situation as the story 7 minutes in with not only me but with one of our Shift Leaders at the time. He still comes to our hotel for some godforsaken reason...

Tbf on the self check story, people are paranoid about being falsely accused of stealing when using self checkout. I used to shop at Wal Mart. Over the course of 6 months I had apparently forgot to scan my dog food a couple times. They didn't offer me a chance to correct the mistake and pay for the dog food, they just called police and told them I had done this multiple times even though I had offered to pay for ALL ofthe dog food i "stole". I was taken to jail, it took over 48 hours to be released AFTER bail was paid so I lost my job. Screw walmart and any store with self checkout.

First story is just like when I worked fast food. They called theselves a restaurant but if your chicken comes in a bag full of juice and sits in a heating drawer for most of the day that isn't a restaurant. There was this one raging nag who thought she was the boss of everyone because she'd been there for a long time. The amount of times she'd complain about someone not working off the clock is insane. If you think it's so important then you do it.

A manager at an old job I had always complained about us not showing up early to help her out despite her having the largest shift crew so we got told to show up early and help out and we did the moment we showed up we clocked in and got to work but this took away hours from her crew so we were told to not clock in until our shift was scheduled to start understandably many of us refused because we were already showing up 2 hours before we were scheduled and we were going to be paid for it and i guess you guys can tell where this is going yep we all got written up and were about to be fired when we all pointed out that they wouldn't have an overnight crew if they did it.

We’ve had self-checkout for 10+ years here in Sweden and I’m genuinely confused at how many times I’ve seen stories about Americans not understanding how they work/what the point is/why they exists. Is this a relatively new thing over there or something? Or are people just hellbent on not learning how to use them/acting dumb/lazy and entitled? It’s usually way quicker unless you have something that’s age restricted. Hell, most big grocery stores here have handheld scanners for their bonus/club members, that you just bring with you and scan as you go.

In other news, I just started my official training at my volunteer retail position after six months of being left to my own devices. (literally I just found out we have a toilet in the store. Thank goodness my workdays only last four to four and a half hours, eh?)
