    • @LockyourHubs4WDing

      None that I know of, some are rear wheel or front wheel drive until traction becomes an issue then the computer engages the other wheels usually via an electronic clutch.
      Mitubishi's 4WD system can be both rear wheel drive and all wheel drive on road, but you would have to switch over manually.

    Hi saw you installing recovery points on brolga enterprises video, thing is ,
    I need to know if they are ok,also wonder why they are twice the price of other recovery points,

    • @LockyourHubs4WDing
      @LockyourHubs4WDing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are properly rated recovery points, I've actually got a copy of the engineers report!
      The reason for the cost will be the limited number of units the manufacturer will be able to sell.
      If you were to manufacture a recovery point for a popular vehicle, let's say a gu patrol. You could reasonably expect to sell thousands of units, and the development costs that would be about the same for either, could be spread over thousands of units as opposed to hundreds.
      I'm just happy a manufacturer was able to justify making them for the later model GV, there are no other recovery point options.

    Is it okay to lock your center diffs when driving through hilly sand dunes with lots of turns? I’ve heard that’s it bad to do lots of turning with your center diffs?
    Thanks mate

    • @LockyourHubs4WDing
      @LockyourHubs4WDing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because of the wheel slip that the sand allows, there are no disadvantages (other than a very slightly increased turning circle) to having the centre diff lock engaged.
      You'll have to spin at least one wheel on each axle before you'll be bogged with it engaged.
      My rule of thumb is, if it's not a hard surface, (like bitumen or concrete) the centre diff lock is in!

      Hey mate last question!
      Regarding rear diff locks in the Paj Sport, if driving through dunes and sandy hills would you leave them off until you came to a big hill or deeply rutted track and only then turn them on, then back off once you’re over the dune
      Is it bad to turn them on and leave them on as soon as you get off the bitchumen/concrete?

    • @LockyourHubs4WDing
      @LockyourHubs4WDing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexsallery with the Paj Sport, unfortunatley, they disable brake traction control to the front wheels (amoung other things) when the rear locker is engaged.
      So heading up hills, you're best having brake traction control to both front and back wheels than only a locker on the rear in most circumstances.
      Down hill, especially in undulating terrain, you're better off with the rear locker engaged as both rear wheel will be forced to turn at the same rate. This means one wheel on the rear axle can't lock up without the other, even if it's in the air and will give you a much more controlled decent.
      With the rear locker on, don't forget it'll affect your turning circle, so you'll still be able to do a 90 degree turn, but hair pin bends will be out of the question.
      Don't forget to disable the ESC when you're dune driving!

    Hey mate, best video I’ve seen on center diff locks.. I’ve just bought a Pajero Sport which has 4H with center diff locked and 4L with center diff locked, plus rear diff lock button too... there’s almost too many choices, do I do most off road driving in 4H locked center unless it gets really hairy and only then put on the rear diff lock? Do you have any rule of thumb about when to use rear diff lock?

    • @LockyourHubs4WDing
      @LockyourHubs4WDing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      G'day Alex, you're in luck I was only driving a Pajero Sport the other day.
      For everyday road use on hard surfaces, I would use 4H. On loose surfaces, like high speed dirt roads and beaches below the high tide mark (anywhere you're going to be doing over 50 or 60kph) use 4Hlc, it'll give you more predicable handling etc. For steep tracks etc. you'll need 4Llc (Low range)
      The Pajero Sport is a little unusual in that when you engage the rear diff lock, it cuts brake traction control to the front wheels. So when you're heading up hill, considering the Paj Sport's great traction control, I would leave the rear diff lock dis-engaged, so you maintain traction control to the front wheels.
      Going downhill however, as long as there are no hair pin bends, I would engage the diff lock. Here's why, in undulating terrain, when one of the rear wheels get light if you're either braking or driving through the brakes, the light wheel will skid and allow the other wheel to accelerate shooting you faster down the hill. With the rear diff lock engaged, it'll force both rear wheels to turn at the same rate, regardless of load or amount of brake applied, so you won't go skidding down the hill in undulating terrain, giving a much more controlled decent.
      Don't forget to make sure ESC is turned off in 4Hlc if you're doing any beach exits or dune climbing etc. Otherwise when the car moves around a little the ESC will think your skidding and cut throttle and apply brakes, usually leaving you bogged on the beach exit!
      Hope this helps.

    • @alexsallery
      @alexsallery 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lock your Hubs 4WDing awesome info mate thanks for the reply! The cars are crazy smart nowadays with their electronics.
      I think I’ll have to do some playing around... so you wouldn’t advise keeping the rear locker on all the time when off-road??
      I plan to do most off-roading in 4Hlc and then goto low range when it gets softer or steeper.
      How did you think the PS performed off-road when you were driving it?

    Great video.
    Was just wondering if you consider unsealed roads as “off road”

      Anytime I'm not on a hard surface like bitumen, I lock in the centre diff. So any dirt or gravel road, yes.

    If my car’s front two wheels are stuck in desert sand and both tyres are spinning but the car isn’t getting out, should I use the centre lock differential or the Rear lock differential?

      Anytime you're not on a hard surface, the centre diff lock should be engaged. Then you would need at least one wheel on the front and one wheel on the rear spinning before forward momentum stops.

    Nice video. I usually don't engage the center diff off road unless in a real 4x4 situation. I learned a few things from your video. Tnx

      Thanks for the kind words, there seems to be an aversion out there to locking in the centre diff off-road, the fact that some car owner manuals tell you not to unless your stuck doesn't help...
