    Good job of giving RobRob his props; many of us would still be rubbing two tubes together without his guidance...

    This has been a great series. I've been watching Uncle Doug work on some black and silver face Fenders and considering building my own. This gives me lots of inspiration. I'm not ready for something this complex, but the complexity of this amp is what gives you so many tone options. Keep up the good work, and I'll keep watching.

      Thanks Jeff. My first build was something much simpler. Take it one step at a time and you can get there!

    I'd been watching your channel for a long time. It's great to see your journey. I also love to hack my gear and build stuff. My father is an electrical engineer and taught me electronics when I was a kid, so I've tried to convince him to build a guitar tube amp with me as a father and son project. Hopefully we can. Keep up the good work.

    The filter cap upgrade is a good idea. I have had great results with F&T caps. When I modestly increase the primary filter caps like you discussed I get less flabby and more responsive low frequencies. Enjoy the series. Amp sounds good!

    • @Yamazaki1923
      @Yamazaki1923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @randysummers9228

      @@Yamazaki1923 Sprague Atom are good caps. The values I need are more readily available with the F&T caps from my suppliers. They are also easier to fit in spaces. I use a lot of Sprague orange drop caps in my circuits. Great quality.

    With not too much distortion and playing through the bridge PU, this sounds killer. When too much distortion and through the neck PU it gets a bit farty. But hey, that was a great journey! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!

    Glad to see you found and fixed some of the problems. Yes, the JJ 6V6S is a robust tube and was a good solution for the higher voltages due to the wrong transformer. I can guarantee you though, that the OT is not big enough and if you crank the amp up enough the core will saturate and will sound horrible. You should change the first stage filtering to be much bigger and to handle the 500+ plate voltage. Use 2 big caps in series like 220U, this will result in 110U filtering, but double the voltage rating of the cap, you need parallel resistors for this also, look at an old Fender amp schem. If your fuse isn't big enough, the inrush of current with bigger caps might blow it, and you might need to make it bigger. Part of the appeal of Dumbles is the clean tone, you really should put the switch in. Use eyelet boards next time, it's much easier, and cleaner. Also, shielded cable has capacitance that can remove high frequencies, you have a lot of it in there, it's probably sucking the tone out to some degree.

    Congratulations on the Dumble build! Sounds great and thanks for taking the time to document it by making this video. It’s very educational to see you troubleshoot and the little things that can happen when one is building an amp like a yellow wire having a piece of the insulation missing and burning out a resistor below it or the cap that became unsoldered when you were soldering something else into the same eyelet. I admire your patience in tracking these things down. One funny note, because I am a bit hard of hearing (too many years of playing loud rock ‘n’ roll), I like to turn on the closed captioning, so sometimes see some funny mistranslations. The CC kept calling the Dumble amp a Dumbo amp. Got a little chuckle out of that. Thanks again!

    just happened on your channel.. i think i've seen these before but i paid attention today.. reminded me of my early Dumble tone chasing... it wasn't until i perfected my fave circuit that i realized the "Dumble" tone wasn't really a tone but because he custom tuned each machine to its owner... and some just sound like crap.. honestly.. they are just amps.. with some mods.. i learned some tricks along the way.. picked and choose from some values and circuit mods.. my best amps i ever designed was a hybrid Princeton (foot switchable marshall/fender/mesa channels, master vol, reverb, effects loop, boost/bright, attenuator, adjustable "hotdog" bias switch) made a 100watt version too.. 4 6L6s.. with a 5150/fender vibrolux/ hk triamp channels... same basic mods.. trying to include the best of all worlds i could.. then i started chasing speakers.. that was completely enlightening.. the magic is in the speakers.. i built a 2x12 for recording.. a green back with that half closed.. then a vintage jensen.. open backed.. same cab tho.. with the smaller amp was so versatile.. perfect for recording.. the bigger amp with a 4x12 was a monster.. kept tweaking it and made a great road rig.. fast forward.. now a helix with IRs... DI a dry channel to the board.. send a full wet to the board for a 2nd channel.. and break off a 2nd chain pre amp/cab and send that to the little custom Princeton 3 channel stage amp.. sm57 on which speaker fits the sound needed.. .send that as a 3rd channel.. mix wet/dry/wet... pan the wet signals left and right with a slight delay.. feed the dry in dead center with a very small additional delay if needed.. thats huge and magical.. can be hard for metal.. silky smooth for jazz or twangy for country.. and anywhere in between.. can literally get anything from it.. it's way more than my full rack and stack from back in the day and doesn't break my back...

    Nice video Kley. The 1.6ohm resistor isn't really an issue, it's still Ohm's Law no matter the value. Just one extra step with the calculator rather than reading the DMM. I still measure them each time even if I use 1% metal film

    • @jutukka
      @jutukka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you need a very good meter and leads to measure small resistance values and get reliable and accurate results. To use 1ohm 1% resistors is the only sensible option because they cost almost nothing.

  • @briankehew579
    @briankehew579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It sounds SO much better with the corrected issues. But that's partly an issue, people building what they term "a Dumble" when all kinds of things could be wrong or different. The small details are what differentiates Great from Good. Look at all the fine options and ideas he had compared to the Marshall, Ampeg, Fender or SUNN of those days. Again, it's easy to do now, but no one was back then.

    One last word about the meter's resistance at 3:55; just short the leads together on the lowest ohm setting. Usually will read about .3 ohms. This is the meter's/leads internal resistance. Subtract from actual reading of 1 ohm resistor.

    very coherent explanation of your troubleshooting experience. are you curious what tube rectification might offer? i’ve not thought it through but it seems pretty simple to rig an external tube rectifier box and bypass the solid state diodes just to play around and test it.

    This was great, fascinating, thanks for putting in all this work and sharing it! I'm curious for your thoughts/reasons for using the Brown DLite kit -- I've seen these for something like $900 bucks, and I'm thinking the sum of the components is probably a fair amount less than that. Although I do understand the convenience.

    Do all components need to be scaled down evenly? Or can i keep everything except for the power the same?

    I've only ever played one Steel String Singer and one Overdrive Special (both David Lindley's) and your build doesn't sound much like those but it does sound really good and I agree it is extremely usable for any player cool enough to actually use his guitar's controls. I do however think it is worth the effort to at least try the switched mode since any amp with any similarities to Dumbles exhibits or should exhibit extreme articulation. It is likely worth a follow up video as well. Kudos, man... nice job.
