    Let's be real, the whole fake an audition to find your friend a wife could totally be the plot of a romantic comedy.

    Showed my best friend Audition a couple weeks ago. I wanted to see his reaction when it shifted gears from a romance to one of the most fucked up horror movies ever, but unfortunately, he had heard about the movie. I came up with a plan and told him that there were 2 movies called Audition, one is a horror movie and the other is a romance, and we would be watching the romance. He wasn't fully convinced, so I photoshopped iMDB pages for 2 separate movies titled Audition and I was somehow able to convince him. His reaction was priceless when the body bag rolled across the room.

    I was about 15 when I saw this movie, my mom and I love horror films and we wanted to find the scariest ones of all. We had a couple of marathons and this one was the last on the list. We actually had to stop the movie and come back the next day because it was getting to us... I look back now and it is almost a badge of honor and cherished memory watching this film and experiencing it with someone so close to me. Still to this day we always bring it up in conversation with others when they wanna talk horror movies with us.

    the way I see the "fever dream" is how the narrative unfolds as the main character slowly starts getting a grasp of what's actually happening, he was so blinded by love that he denied her actual nature despite the many signals and warnings in front of him, Audition is cinema at it's best.

    I’m sure the writers of Saw took inspiration from Audition. Leigh Whannell had this great comment when describing his film and how tension works.

    I saw this in a local independent theater. Went in completely blind, didn't even know it was a horror movie. All I knew was what I read in a review in a newspaper - widower sets up an audition to find a new wife and "get's more than he was expecting."
    This movie scarred me. The couple behind me got up and left during the finale. Driving home, all I could say was "That was a F&#*ed up movie!", over and over again, our loud, to no one in particular.
    Coincidentally, about a week later, I saw its DVD for sale at Best Buy, so, of course I bought it to spread the madness to my friends...

      I just watched it with zero knowledge, I've only ever seen the character in her poster pose. I knew it was likely horror and heard about the traumatic elements. I almost watched the trailer on yt that spoils a lot of the film (almost the entire thing) but thankfully stopped watching right at the start. Both trailers spoil a lot tho the one with the most views is just horrible. It really impacted my viewing by not knowing anything about it. From the very get go until the end I just wasn't let go.

      - For over-the-top gore (think Kill Bill) "Ichi the Killer" is a must watch.

      Oh man, you've gotta see Audition if you're going through the great Japanese horror films. If you'd like something else horrific from Miike but on the complete opposite tone to this film, try Ichi the Killer, an utterly batshit film still by today's standards.
      Cure is another great one if you haven't seen it, not a Miike film but it's right in that sweet spot of gritty films from the late 90s to the early 00s.

    I watched this movie as a very dumb and very ignorant teenager. This means that I knew there was going to be “horror” but as I got sucked into the movie I was just enthralled by the drama and the story (with a disturbing bag which I thought was the horror element)… so imagine the shock of the third act being slapped into my dense and innocent face who did not know this movie’s reputation 😂😭. Consequently I blocked the movie completely out of my mind until I came across it again as an adult and remembered how a brilliant slowburn was so effective it traumatized me into developing a temporary selective memory that chose not to remember this movie 😂. That being said, I’m gonna wait for another while before I check it out again 🥲. Thanks for sharing the love for this movie though!

    I saw Audition at a film festival when it was released back in '99. It was deeply disturbing and I've spent my life ever since in the belief that Audition is the sickest movie I've ever seen. I just rewatched this the second time. I didn't get overly disturbed by the movie partly thanks to the usual desensitisation (a.k.a. living on planet Earth) and partly because I still remembered several gory specifics. This allowed me to enjoy the finer details and the pacing of the movie even more. Great movie, absolutely recommended.

    This film scares me on another level. I massively love and appreciate films like 'The Shining' or 'Halloween' which do scare me in a usual film sort-of way.. but for me 'Audition' taps into a creepiness which is more uncomfortably intimate. It seems to intensify with each watch. I even find early moments in the film like the little innocent dog happily minding its own business, gut-wrenching due to what follows.
    Love your channel Chris. I just wish reviews of films like this were longer. I'd also like to thank you, as I only discovered 'Ghostwatch' through your review of it, and it has become one of my absolute favourites. Strongly recommend 'Ghostwatch'.

  • @Greippi10
    @Greippi10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    Audition is definitely one of the most disturbing films I've seen. Even before the third act it's at times filmed and edited to feel dreamy, which had me questioning if it was going to go some supernatural way. That made the torture scene so much stronger, the overflowing malice in the joy she gets from doing it but it's just a normal woman and not some evil manifestation or a crazy supervillain building traps.

    • @fortnitesexman

      that's what i think makes movies like this so much scarier than something like alien for example
      it's the fact that people like this exist, and that events like this could happen to you at really any moment

    Miike wanted to make a movie where the first half was very stereotypical and almost boring to the point he would almost loose the audience and then have the second half be so shocking and gripping that it would pull the audience back in. That's Ballsy film making right there and I've always admired him because he was so willing to experiment with film and how unafraid he was to test his audience.

      @Steven Lee I have to say that Martyrs are buried inside my mind and i even didn´t saw that movie at all and i know that they skinned alive one girl there. But it has interesting philosophy at least to me. From what i saw on Audition, those camera angles and overall direction of those scenes are amazing, so it is difficult to call it terrible when the audio quality is at least great.
      But yo, i am not an expert on torture porn films, i don´t get it either. I am confused as you. I think violence in movies can be used greatly (i love Raid: Redemption cause how hectic, authentic and raw the movie is and it has lot of brutal moments) but i am not a fan of violence for the sake of it, most of the time, i feel numb. I need at least great characters and interesting plot so i will care about bad things if they will happen to them.

    You only mentioned Shigeharu's amorality - you didn't mention the fact that Asami is batshit crazy lol. What Shigeharu did was scummy no doubt, but it was bad in the spectrum of societally acceptable human behavior. It wasn't criminal. What Asami does is not on that spectrum, because she's just plain crazy. What she does is criminal. At any rate, I remember this movie when it came out. As you said, very disturbing. In fact, I haven't watched it since lol...

    • @toxicsugarart2103
      @toxicsugarart2103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      He didn’t mention Asami’s immorality because we already know it. He’s not comparing the two, he’s saying Shigeharu has realistic flaws that expose how these average everyday guys might view women. And Asami isn’t just plain crazy, she’s like this because she’s been hurt (by men) her whole life. Obviously her actions are worse than his, I don’t think Chris was trying to say they weren’t. He was bringing up the fact that it’s easy to overlook the main character being a less than great person because of how much shit Asami throws at him.

    • @SabatSch95
      @SabatSch95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@toxicsugarart2103 I don't buy any of this. Within the context of a movie - where moral standards are vastly lower than irl, evidenced by the fact that main characters can often kill dozens of people without the audience ever batting an eye - organizing an audition as a means to find a wife isn't really all that "awful". I mean, sure, it's definitely bad... but the manner in which critics have used this to justify Asami's "revenge" as some sort of feminist revenge story (and I'm not making up those words, this movie is literally regarded by feminist critics to be cathartic & righteous) is flat out absurd.
      Most of all, the entire analogy of the "audition" as a way that "men" have treated "women" just does not work. Because in real life, it is WOMEN who select. Not men. In fact, this is the case all across the animal kingdom. You don't see female birds doing mating dances, do you? If anything, that audition process is a far more accurate description as to how women actually judge hundreds of men & only go for the top. Ever read that Tinder report they released last year? Yeah, that shit is outright depressing if you're a guy. In short, it basically showed that 80% of women go after the top 20% of men, while the "bottom" 80% of men are all competing for the bottom 20% of women. Statistically, women regard 80% of all men as "ugly" whereas men regard 60% of all women as "pretty". I'm not saying any of this to hate or berate women. As I said, it's a natural evolutionairy process. I'm simply citing some facts & data here to back up my claim that it is women who select instead of men, and women are clearly the ones with the "power" to go through hundreds of men like nothing b/c they have so many options anyway.
      So this movie does not at all "critique" how men "treat" women.... and I find it highly ironic how (feminist) critics have used this as a way to talk about how "misogynistic" men are, when it's actually women (irl) who are guilty of exactly the type of behavior that the male characters in this film are guilty of. Women are the ones with much higher, much more inflated and much more unrealistic standards.
      Seriously, other than this audition, what did Shigeharu seriously do that was so bad? He repeatedly showed that he admires genuine intelligence, skill & experience in women. He didn't just want a pretty face, he wanted real character. As for his standards... I don't remember what exactly he wanted, but I think it was something along the lines of "she needs to have a talent, she needs to be happy, she needs to be submissive". Those aren't exactly bad, or "sexist" standards. The "submissive" one COULD be seen as such, but inherently, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a man wanting a more submissive wife. Especially when women are on average more submissive than men... not to mention how women themselves prefer to be submissive & men dominant, in a sexual context. Let's be honest here, if you'd ask men in general if they prefer their gf's to be more subsmissive or more dominant, 99% of men would choose the former. Wanting a submissive woman can only become toxic when it becomes an excuse to repress such a person & force them to act against their self-interest. But that is not something Shigeharu ever even REMOTELY showed he was interested in doing. He constantly showcased support & empathy towards this woman. Ergo, Shigeharu was not using a woman's predisposition towards submissiveness as a means to get what he wants & manipulate her.
      And who tf are we kidding here, as if women don't have ridiculous & """sexist""" standards towards men themselves? With them unashamedly saying they need their husband to be 6 ft tall, have a six pack, be strong, make tons of money, or what have you... but that's not "toxic", in fact, it's empowering, b/c "queens shouldn't settle" or something.
      I could forgive a lot of this is the movie indeed showed how Asami had been the victim of constant abuse at the hands of countless men, but that's not the case is it? She LITERALLY says how her own mother abused her for years, and beyond that, there was her stepfather, and that's it if I remember correctly. Her biological father may have abused her too, but I don't think so. Should check on that. Point is, She was abused by both men & women, yet she only kills men?
      Long story short, I find the entire feminist analysis on how this movie is "commentary" on how sexist men are towards women to be flat out absurd. I think the movie works MUCH better as a warning against the cycle of violence and of how abused people become abusers themselves. The moment you break down the supposed "feminist" implications of this movie, it all falls flat b/c none of that makes any sense considering our real world gender dynamics. More than anything, I find the way that feminist critics have glorified and hailed Asami as some type of righteous anti-hero who inflicts justified revenge on "men" to be deeply disturbing. Sorry, but if these people genuinely believe that men deserve to be brutally tortured & murdered for having the audacity to have standards when it comes to dating, then I genuinely don't know what to tell these people.
