I first listened Joe singing this song in Gary Ngan‘s radio programme years ago, i was immediately captivated and besotted and the song has kept haunting me at times. He fully immersed himself in the poignant lyrics written by the legendary 黃霑, pouring his heart into the performance with a sonorous voice and impeccable Mandarin intonation. Each note enveloped with the poignancy and despair of a persona pleading for his beloved to leave and forget him, all conveyed with a subtlety that ached our hearts and resonated without turning it schmaltzy, maintaining it decent and neat, much like his dapper tuxedo on stage. Vocal Coach Ken Taylor explains it this way - you need to play with the dynamics, the color of the tones, the different inflections and the length you hold different notes until you've created your own version of a song so emotional that has the audience eating right out of your hands. So now you know how much work goes into the making of an emotional song! I'm not surprised if JM makes a dash for the airport, grabbing his bags, straight after every performance!
