Due to not yet aquiring Lucasfilm or any affiliates like LucasArts, they had to change characters they did not have the IP for. If not for that change, Lechuck likely would have filled the role of both Barbossa and Jones, just in different stages of his terrifying transformative tirade.

Yes, back then, when PotC was released, I was actually shocked that they had made an impudent Monkey Island rip-off - at least in my eyes: Will Turner + Jack... sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow = Guybrush Elizabeth Swann = Elaine Captain Barbossa = LeChuck and in the second part they even added a voodoo priestess. That's bold!
It’s interesting seeing the connections between Davy Jones and Lechuck, Both are obviously undead. Horrifying, and a terror on the seas. But they’re also both heartbroken, for different reasons of course.

Actually Pirates of the Carribbean followed Monkey Island. Tia Dalma is so 100% the Vodoo Lady, that can't be a coincidence. Even her hut looks like the one in the swamp in MI2.
Well if you wanna get technical, Monkey Island was inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which came first. Then the Monkey Island movie was in production, went nowhere, Lucasarts was bought out by Disney, and the writer of the Monkey Island movie went on to write the first Pirates movie, which he may have used the script for the unmade Monkey Island movie as a template for, considering their plots are scarily similar.

yes, that is why disney got the rights to it, because they copied most things from monkey island.

@Android in Black sure you have the dates right there? Lucasfilm was sold to Disney in 2012, the first 4 Pirates movies are 2003-2011.
