I can’t quit thinking about how I was thinking of switching from drums to bass at the start of 1995 when I turned 15, was given an ultimatum by my father to choose either piano or guitar or he would sell my drums, choosing to let him teach me guitar chords and then suddenly being introduced to the music of the Doors. If that first exposure had taken place just a month earlier, Ray would have been my impetus to instead become a piano player. Later on, I learned this Piano Bass was his weapon of choice to keep the Doors paired down to a quartet when they became recording artists. When I eventually did at Keyboard‘s and synthesizers to my palate, as well as both guitar and bass, all the while keeping the drums as one of my instruments, I was tempted on more than one occasion to get one of these. It didn’t happen, but I have to acknowledge people like you who have learned how to play it artfully.
I'm no musician but I first saw one of these in late 1962. The post-Buddy Holly Crickets came over to the UK, minus two of the band - drummer Jerry Allison and bass player Joe B Mauldin. Glen D Hardin, later of Presley's backing group, and Emmy Lou Harris's Hot Band, came in Mauldin's place, complete with the Fender Rhodes piano bass, and appeared in Birmingham on 5 November. Hardin played the piano bass with his left hand and a standard piano with his right. These slimmed-down Crickets also appeared in the film Just For Fun, released in February 1963, singing their current release My Little Girl, again with Hardin using the piano bass.
I first knew this piano from the song Light My Fire from The Doors. The band didn’t have enough space for a 5th member so instead of a bass guitarist, the keyboardist played the piano bass with the left hand & the organ with the right hand. The keyboardist in question is the one and only, Mr. Ray Manzarek. Did you know about this by any chance? Other than that, great video 👍.
I have the exact instrument that you are showing here, but it has a sparkly top to it. That is silver and it’s in excellent condition.. It was kept indoors. It’s whole life and there’s nothing wrong with it. I’d like to show it to you, but for some reason, I can’t figure out how to show you a video or a picture.
Nice refurbishment. I've refurbished two 1970s Rhodes 73s and an 88 back in pre-Vintage Vibe days when used Rhodes in playable condition sold for about $100. Still love the sound, but the weight and size are not things I want to deal with anymore so I stick to VSTs. Have craved getting the small Piano Bass, but still can't justify it, especially with current prices. Nice job again. Cheers.
@@analogemma The Rhodes Electric Piano is really an Electric Dulcitone because it has Tuning Forks struck by Hammers which are then Amplified by Pickups. So in a way it's an Electric Bass Dulcitone. I guess the Dulcitone was in fact revived by Electrifying it.
those are so cute - use to see them in pawn shops all the time. speaking of cute - you're not too bad yourself. I have an organ that needs to be serviced if you're interested - needs a good polishing.
Yea they are but damn are they heavy lol. Unfortunately I'm not too much of a help on organs; when the electronics are the main driver my capability dwindles lmao
@@analogemma oh the equipment works perfectly fine - just hasn't been used in a while. I think it has some built up crud in it that just needs to be blown out.

Sounds like it would be that then! Cool experience!
Thank you for this excellent guide. I will be sure to use this with my Rhode :)

Lol yes, he is very popular in this space; I even was hired by a cover band to service one of his original Piano Basses--thank you for your support!
Thanks a lot for making such a thorough introduction to this beautiful instrument! ❤🎹😀
YESSS THE LEGENDS
Loved it ❤
💕
Really interesting, thanks!
I'm glad!
Playing two keyboard instruments is hard enough. I can't even imagine playing them when they are perpendicular.
LOL thank you for this, I felt stupid when my wrist was hurting after 5 minutes lmao
omg you are doing god's work. this is an absolutely wonderful channel. thank you!
Haha thank you so much
thank you for this great vid! for some reason i’m obsessed with these. i’d play in a band only using one of these if i could lol
LOL tell me about it, I just bought another one lmao; this one has wheels!

Gah ain't that the truth, makes your gig bag heavier and your wallet lighter lmao. Must have been crazy sourcing parts back then! Thanks for watching!
Great walkthrough. Also you're really cool :)
Thank you!
Cute little piano
Haha yep!

Somebody (Behringer) needs to clone one of these! Please 🙏
Lol I think any Rhodes emulator could do the same thing, its the feel and mistakes you won't get though; also fuck Behringer lol
