  • Aldi Hungary (full name: Aldi Hungary Food Bt.) Hungary one of the largest retail store networks. It is the Hungarian subsidiary of the German-origin retail chain Aldi Süd (Hungarian: Aldi Dél).[1] (Completely independent of Aldi Nord (Aldi North).)
Founded in 2008, Aldi Hungary Food Bt. has its headquarters in Biatorbágy. As of December 2022, it has 163 stores in the country.[2]
Its biggest competitors in Hungary are Lidl and Penny Market in most places among discount stores.
Aldi appeared as the sixth discount chain of Hungary, after the discount chains Profi, Plus, Jééé, Penny Market and Lidl. Of these discount chains, it currently shares the Hungarian market with Penny Market and Lidl. Jééé left the market in 2000, Plus in 2008 (fearing fierce competition from Aldi, among others), and Profi in 2012.
Although market rumors have already put the opening of discount stores in 2007,[3] They were not finally released until 2008. Although the construction of the logistics centre in Biatorbágy started as early as 2006, it was not completed until the beginning of 2008.
On April 2008, 17, it opened its first five stores in Hungary in Debrecen, Gyula, Nyíregyháza, Pécs and Piliscsaba.[4] The company - unlike its rivals in blatant marketing - explicitly silenced the opening of its stores, and it was only after journalistic and reader investigations that the location of the stores was revealed.[5][6] Aldi's main rival, Lidl, is also preparing for openings, with a strong campaign to strengthen their own brand near Aldi stores. Before the construction of many stores, a citizens' forum is held, where the inconvenience caused by several times a day delivery regularly arises as a problem, to which the company's representatives try to provide appropriate answers.[7]
Their 74th store was opened in Újlipótváros, which was previously less covered by larger grocery stores, and it is currently one of their most trafficked stores, where not only the residents of the area, but also the customers of Lehel Hall regularly visit. It was also in this store that the first "basket" checkout was opened. On April 2011, 14, Aldi opened its 75th store in Hungary in Szolnok.
During its operation in Hungary, Aldi closed three stores (gyulai, paksi and siklósi, after two or three years of operation) partly due to excessively low traffic and partly due to the greater distance from the cities. Since then, the company has been asked about the future fate of the retail space in a number of Facebook messages, and the official response makes the reopening dependent on changing market conditions. The Paks supermarket was reopened in October 2017, gyulai in December 2017 and Siklós store in November 2019.
Although its owners have explicitly avoided contact with the media, the company has already made several statements to the press in Hungary. Among other things, this was the interview in October 2011 about the future of the company in Hungary, during which the representative of the company promised dozens of new stores for the coming years.[8] Their new stores were established in previously existing buildings, so the Sopron Street unit was subsequently built in a former production hall,[9] and several existing buildings have been architecturally modified to suit their needs. Thus, some of their stores have been set up in iconic rooms, e.g. their Váci street store in Budapest is located on the site of the former Kossuth cinema, their fire street shop is located in a monumental riding hall, their store on Kossuth Lajos street is located on the site of the former Pioneer department store, their unit on Szent Imre square is located in csepel's first ABC store, and their store on Fővám square is located in the Great Hall.
The location of their stores is characterized by the fact that they specifically try to settle next to their competitors, both to facilitate purchases and to suck up customers from rivals. Thus, eg. Aldi store is located next to Auchan, CBA, Lidl, Penny Market, Spar and Tesco stores.
Most of their stores are built according to simple, pre-made plans, in their own greenfield investment, but some of their stores are rented, mainly in the city center. Thus, for example, their store in Újlipótváros was established on the ground floor of an office building, rákóczi út in an apartment building, on the site of the former DIY stores on Kerepesi street and Tálas street.
Due to the success of their downtown shops, they opened new stores in residential buildings, such as in Lipótváros, on Báthory Street, in Újlipótváros, on the site of Kossuth cinema, as well as in an office building in Angyalföld, on Béke Street.

I’m from Hungary originally but I’ve been living in the US since at the end of 2018 - I went home last year and I was absolutely SHOCKED at the prices, food and restaurants everything seemed to have at least doubled if not tripled from a few years ago. Pad Thai wok bar used to be a nicer fast food restaurant I used to eat at in college for about 1500 HUF and the same meal cost 5500 HUF last summer I thought I entered my order wrong
