I agree with you that we need taxes to perform all the needs of the public but at the same time our government regardless of party has become corrupt and all of these things are being neglected for the profit of the state. Our borders are open our infrastructure is crumbling and the only places that are benefiting from our taxes are those that the state is beholden to.
In the early 90's we had a radio channel in the Netherlands that bought a large old ship and sailed just outside our borders, in order to tackle more daring subjects. In the end it became one of our TV channels that makes rubbish. But back then they were innovative. Talking about the Veronica channel, love from Rotterdamn man

I can just imagine the Eppsteins of the world getting their own country and having a couple plane fulls of new kids flown in every morning and every one of them just are never seen or heard from again.
There’s a reason why the vast majority of Libertarians are extremely wealthy. Their policies and views only cater to their needs. The vast majority of people on earth have the smallest percentage of money while the majority of money is owned by the extremely rich and they will do anything they can to take more and justify it. We all know they don’t need more and the majority of us would actually, making a small fraction of a fraction of what these people bring every year. It’s greed and it’s highest forms and the fact that the ultra rich do not get taxed (at least in the US) absolutely blows my mind. When I hear politicians and wealthy people complaining about national debt and the country not having enough money to do XYZ, it’s absolute bullshit! tax the rich and we have a ton of fucking money to go around to increase the quality of life for the majority of people! Take a look around at all of the failing nations and or the poorest nations. I guarantee you all of them are run by extremely rich people. These people have more than enough money than they can even spend in their lifetime, their kids lifetime, their grandkids lifetime , yet they would rather die than help the people underneath them who can barely even buy food to live. It’s disgusting!!! No regulation ALWAYS leads to EXPLOITATION!! It’s literally happening in the United States right now. Wages have stayed the same while cost-of-living has skyrocketed. Yet somehow rich people still aren’t paying taxes and they just so happened to be the biggest influence on the wages paid and the taxes paid by middle and lower class citizens. The middle class is actually disappearing, which is really scary. Sorry, rant over!

There has been occasions where someone with too much money goes on about building a civilization out in space. My view has always been that they are free to go so long as they understand that they are not welcome back. If some yahoo wants to spend an ungodly amount of money to live among the storms and the thirty foot waves, inconsistent supply and no production, then we'll happily allow them to fund the employment of communities to build their dreams/nightmares rather than let the money just sit in their wallets. Fools and their money are soon parted, so let's hear it for wealth re-distribution. Seriously, the first multi-day weather event and they'll start attacking each other for what little supplies they would have. They are totally dependent on the infrastructure under their feet.
Why is it either-or ? All we need to do is love our neighbor. No longer stop them from building their dreams, whether sea steading or uplifting poverty. Coercing adversity, "court" , especially family law, is a tyranny worth emancipating from.
The flip side is we arent in the 1930s. Government eventually became the corporations in many ways. Government regulation does hinder job creation sometimes, it does hold back individuals, among other things. The answer to me is balance of course, but here in the US in some places gov is too big along with corporate companies and individual billionares. Its weird because it didnt take lasse fair to have it happen. A mix of a classically liberal, small gov but with social programs and a progressive tax rate without over-beurocratizing things... Idk, i have government stepping in front my life quite often anymore in adulthood, and my ideals of even social-democracy seems to give government too much power lol. But also just letting the ultra-rich dictate is part of the current problem to a degree too. Just dont give in to ideology or at least rigid fundamentalist ideology - thats always probably a good idea lol.
"If those people aren't happy with your seastead, they can detach and move somewhere else." Doesn't he realise that this is, technically, how the world already works?
Part of our problem in society as a whole, is that a good chunk of folk believe tht being financially successful means a person is intellectually superior. "You're rich! You must be smart!" Another good chunk of folk are "hangers on" following the rich in the hopes of getting some scraps from them. Theres also alot of folk that misplace arrogance instead of pride. They want the lot, the envy of others, the adulation of being seen as this or as that, but arent willing or able to do the work required in order to actually 'be' this or that. Their 'reality' is what others opinion of them are, not their opinion of themselves, and sure as shit not the 'reality' of their personal and the worlds at large situation.
A Billionaire city needs servers, maids cleaners, cops, firefighters and many more types of workers, and also law & order for all those folks, so what would this achieve ? Surely no more privacy or freedom than they already have ..
I think the most successful of these attempts by some distance is MS The World, which is just a bunch of people living on a conventional cruise ship on a permanent basis. Prices for a studio flat on board run well into the 8 figures though.

But, we can try, the option is available, we just have to pull our heads out our arses and figure it out as best we can. We won't see the result, but if we can lay the foundational idea and framework of a new system, maybe it'll plant the seed in others and in time they'll see that there's more than a choice between capitalism or communism.

tech bro invents idea more expensive and less attractive than paying your taxes
🤔 I'm not sure how true this is. All the rich billionaires would pay billions in taxes, this cost $167m, even if that cost ballooned (which it will), even $2b one off payment, is better then the taxes a lot of the billionaires have to, should, pay.
Me personally, I'd rather pay the 0% in tax that Bezos and Musk pay, $1 tax Zuckerberg pays, 0.03% Google pays, make people's lives easier, because when wages are paid I think you can make that a tax deduction, equipment for your staff, gyms, passes, etc are all deductible. Then still live on land.
Rather then pay, $200m and live on a condo on the sea.
From a UK student of geopolitics and former silicon Valley employee this is a great video. I love the way you traced the line from Seasteading to tax havens and global inequality. Its a very academic kind of issue but you present it in a very accessible way. Keep em coming 👍

asking, if there are no taxes, how will they fund the public services? who will ensure the security and urban planning?
I agree with you that we need taxes to perform all the needs of the public but at the same time our government regardless of party has become corrupt and all of these things are being neglected for the profit of the state. Our borders are open our infrastructure is crumbling and the only places that are benefiting from our taxes are those that the state is beholden to.
In the early 90's we had a radio channel in the Netherlands that bought a large old ship and sailed
just outside our borders, in order to tackle more daring subjects.

Yes Jimmy!! Amazing content, well researched and really get into the often corrupt dynamics of this all, linking to the messed up libertarian attitudes that are being propagated without enough scrutiny. 👏🏽

Part of our problem in society as a whole, is that a good chunk of folk believe tht being financially successful means a person is intellectually superior.
"You're rich! You must be smart!"
Another good chunk of folk are "hangers on" following the rich in the hopes of getting some scraps from them.
Theres also alot of folk that misplace arrogance instead of pride.
They want the lot, the envy of others, the adulation of being seen as this or as that,
but arent willing or able to do the work required in order to actually 'be' this or that.
