A 1971 memo was the blueprint for Project 2025. It was a Master Plan to legalize corruption

  • It’s easy to get disillusioned with American politics. There’s a two party system that makes everything seem intractable, a general lack or transparency, and an overwhelming sense that corporate greed somehow controls everything. But it didn’t have to be that way.
This week I had the great privilege to interview investigative journalist David Sirota about his brand new limited series podcast Master Plan. In it he traces the roots of our current political deadlock back more than 50 years to Nixon administration where the destined-to-be-impeached president took a bribe on tape from the Milk lobby.
When the news came out that dairy farmers were funneling vast sums of cash into the Nixon campaign American politicians did something almost unheard of: they passed new laws on campaign finance that made this exact thing illegal. What could have been the beginning of a new era of transparency in government ultimately had the opposite effect. Frightened by the possibility of clean politics a soon-to-be supreme court justice named Lewis Powell cooked up a document that became the vision of corporate oligarchs to legalize corruption. Sirota and his team of talented journalists (which includes my wife Laura Krantz) follow the story from the infamous Powell Memo through a series of backroom deals, pivotal supreme court decisions and bad faith efforts all the way to the penning of the Republican manifesto “Project 2025” in this year’s election.
I don’t want to give too much away, except to say that the show elegantly covers a huge breadth of American history and will make you think about politics in an entirely new way.

You are very wrong about the point you made concerning money in politics. Your argument disregards the media coverage and focus which Trump's campaign got. He didn't need to outspend Clinton because the media gave him endless coverage. They covered his empty podium while Bernie was giving a speech to a packed crowd. What message does that send to the public? Whats the symbol there? It says, this guy is important, take this guy seriously. The media made Trump and they got him elected. If the refused to cover him, he never would have gained half the traction he did. What's more, the democrats, namely the Clinton campaign was boosting Trump during the republican primaries! It was in the leaked emails, it's called the pied piper strategy, they wanted to run against Trump because they foolishly believed he's be the easiest to defeat in the general. Again too smart for their own good. To this day the DNC is still supporting MAGA candidates in down ballet elections. No one talks about this.

While not a panaceaia it does allot people to vote for their preference while not hurting their voting power by electing a person they really would not want. Like where Ralph Nader elected Bush as president by being a spoiler. Anouth problem is to much democracy in our system. This is where money can corrupt so much where lower level politicians can be overly influenced by money. This is why most other democracies have parliamentary systems and much more appointed positions by the party in power. Here citizens know more about what they are voting for and can be more in charge of what gets done.

Could the current inflationary "bubble" be a deliberate & concerted effort to sew unrest & dissention among the general population, leveraging modern computational power to evade detection, while keeping the efforts from tipping the economy into a full blown recession, unless or until such a recession is deemed necessary? Given the scale of corporate control over markets, is such a effort possible?

Speaking of a lack of transparency, maybe it would be good to elaborate on the arguments being made by e.g. Clarence Thomas, rather than merely making judgements about them. For example, SCOTUS should be ruling on constitutional matters. Activist judges making new law (e.g. the original Roe v Wade judgement) is not supposed to happen. Thomas' judgement may well have been that the issue was not within SCOTUS jurisdiction and therefore should not be addressed either way (like the more recent cancellation of Roe v Wade) at the federal level.
It seems that Congress deliberately passes bad law to allow corruption via agencies who "work out the details". It also seems that the general issue is the scope of the federal government beyond the mandate the founders gave it. The problem of corruption is reduced when you have fewer ways to influence the flow of money. Regulation is used to create barriers to entry and funnelling money from the tax-payer to corporations via the government is not something that should happen.
Politics _should_ be relatively unimportant. Using "democracy" to impose restrictions on people is specifically why the USA was designed as a constitutional republic, not a democracy. If you stop the ability to spend (and overspend) money, the corruption is less important.

I voted Nader in 2000 without knowing about threshold for govt support to Green Party.
I hoped that incremental increase in Green Party votes would lead to more voters thinking they had a chance, jumping on later.
I was low information, Gore hadn't yet written Inconvenient Truth, and Tipper was loud about censoring rock and roll.
I don't love the insistent anti - capitalist plank in their platform. I love that they _have_ a platform. I'm now fed up enough to be open to anti - capitalism.
I would throw votes to Green Party if we get ranked choice / preference voting.
