We have a late 50’s D 17 wide front end left for us when my grandpa passed away. We had a WD 45 narrow before that. He taught me to operate them when I was about 12. I’m now into my 40’s and can really appreciate how good of a machine this is. It works great for discing food plots and mowing the hay fields. You can also hook it up to about anything and you will pull it out, you just might wheelie a few times first 😆

Love how these little gals purr! I have an AC D17 Series IV in my garage. My Dad bought it brand new on Sept 5, 1968. I use it now to give kids hay rides on Halloween.

Great video! Both of my grandpas have an Allis Chalmers D17. One has a series III, and the other has a series IV. My grandfather with the series IV used it as his main tractor until the 1980s. It was the first tractor I learned to drive, and is one of my all time favorite tractors.

Good ol' Allis Chalmers. When you mention the D series to any one who is familiar with them, their reaction is almost always "you just can't kill those tractors, just fix em and keep rollin." We still use a series IV D17 with a loader on our farm regularly.

I grew up on a farm with orange tractors and equipment. From G to D19 and everything in-between. Thanks for the video ( I still have my first G.) We used all crop allis combines until we bought our first "Gleaner." On the farm we only had what could earn it's own way, and I said it before and I will say it again
"Only Rich Farmers Run Green Tractors."
From 1947 to 1987 I never had an orange anything come out of the field that I couldn't put back in service within the same hour, and that's a documented fact!!! "That is the difference between a
Diamond and something jumping a fence too get out of doing the families work." I don't understand it, it all comes down to fence lines (every conflict in history came down to somebody's fence line) my great grandchildren love me but they can't wait for me not too say no again!!! Why do these children fall into the same trap w/some Banker somewhere talking about "Scaling."
Penney's make Dollors, and Dollors make Farm's !!!
When my young ones come and talk to me they always look like Cesare walking into the Roman Senate the last time. Too Funny.
I always take them for an icecream no matter how old they get. I'm so very blessed ! I dont always get a thank you or a hug, but I'm always Grandpa !!!

My grandfather had a pair of WC's. I practically cut teeth on one we called Herky Jerky. Over the years we had a D-19, 180, 200, 7040, and several others plus combines. By far, the favorite was our series 1 D-17. Christened the "Golden Charger", it was the over all most used machine on the farm and we wore it out from one end to the other several times. Thanks for the memories

I drove an early fifties model during three summers of my high school years in the mid fifties. It had a narrow front end and a hand clutch. My uncle rode the binder and I pulled him through some heavy weeds in the oat field. He yelled---"slip the clutch" and in my excitement I hit the foot clutch, killed the PTO and made a big mess of things. A valuable lesson I never forgot.

It was stated in the video there wasn't much change in the d17 through the series. Actually there was alot of change in series IV mainly with the hydraulic system. The pump was moved to where a belt pulley would be & it became a truly live hyd system. Controls moved to the right side of seat. Vastly improved hydraulics. Also series IV was available with factory 3 pt lift for the first time or the traditional snap coupler. Series IV D17 with factory 3 pt is great tractor.

Some of the Allis's I have used in my life time are CA, WD, WD-45, D14, D17, D19 and 190 xt. We have had both LP and Diesel D17. It was the first tracker that I raked hay by myself on. I got to use it because it had power steering and I was so young I had trouble turning the WD. Great video, I like to see a conventional plough/plow working showing the skills of the tractor driver stetching the field so both marry up exactly, unfortunately the driver in the video didn't have the disc's set correctly, drivers now start at one headland and finish at another and can read a newspaper at the same time, I must be getting old, stay safe regards Kevin Fox, London Essex.

Rode on a bunch as a kid, we pulled 4 14s with a gas engine. It was fine running engine and would easily run 6 hours on the fuel tank. It was a series one, it had a really slow hydraulic system but other than that it was great.

    • @RJ1999x
      @RJ1999x 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hydraulic weren't slow if you had Allis Chalmers cylinders. The D17 was high pressure low gpm which used a small cylinder that reacted quickly. Other tractors had lo pressure high flow so they took a big cylinder to do the same work

This would indeed have been considered a big tractor in the 1950s. A dairy farm we stayed on at the time had a Fergie 28 and a Nuffield 45 for 130 acres. (NZ) A new Fergie cost $1830, same as a VW Beetle. The Nuffield would have been much the same as it was five years older.

While everybody else was using newer and bigger tractors but, it did the work that needed to be done.
