Can the doctrine be used by the defendant or is it only to be used by the plaintiff.....??where the facts of the case runs out to show that the plaintiff produced no reasonable explanation for the plaintiffs negligence.....

The doctrine is also a rule of evidence that gives the plaintiff an alternative way of showing that the defendant was clearly negligent.
It would apply in a situation where the plaintiff is suing a defendant for their negligent act that has caused the plaintiff to suffer injury.
In return, the defendant can plead the best defence placed for their facts, such as voluntary assumption of risk, intervening act of a third party, Act of God among others.
