    Thank you so much. I am from Ukraine. Your work helps to understand the surrounding nature better , to recognise so many things I see here, in Greater Manchester. Everything is new for me here and at the same time so close to my native land. Well done. From Ukraine with love.

      It makes all the difference having hundred percent of it with the animals rather than the television and some TH-cam channels with only 10% animals 90% an overenthusiastic presenter being rammed down your throat does get tiresome.

    Stephen de Vera is one of those wonderful surprises which occasionally turn up on TH-cam. Considering that he has made these professional quality videos without any assistance from a huge supporting camera, sound expert and a myriad of technical assistance which accompany countryside and wildlife videos seen on mainstream media, he must have had a lot of patience and put in a lot of. Hard work of his own, to make such fascinating and fascinating and detailed documentaries. I look forward to more of them.

    • @WildlifeInCloseUp
      @WildlifeInCloseUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was a lot of work for sure and for little financial gain but the reward is in the satisfaction of doing something I feel needs reiterating: if mankind is ever going to end it's war on the environment the solution starts at home and not in watching glossy big budget documentaries filmed in faraway locations. Thank you for your feedback.

      @@WildlifeInCloseUpI totally agree with what you've said, and with the compliments on your beautiful work. I'm from Pennsylvania, US, and love to photograph local flora and fauna, which rarely get their own documentaries. I truly appreciate videos like this from a professional who also understands the beauty and importance of their hometown wildlife. Your focus on the quieter parts of the animals' lives is a refreshing change as well! Thank you!

    Magical, you're gifted to get these shots! I live off grid in Brittany and am constantly out and about and can count on one hand some exceptional encounters. I've been sitting in a hedge with a fox half a metre next to me grubbing his ears moved when I swallowed, it was late evening but not yet dusk. I returned the next evening with a friend to enable me to endorse this encounter, the fox returned along the hedgerow and slowly passed in front of us within a metre. Like the first night we were just sitting in the hedge no growth in front of us. I'm also lucky enough to have a kingfisher nest in the bank on the stream 30m from my dwelling and for three years now I've watched them coming and going. They have been here for a couple of weeks now so hopefully the fourth year for me to catch daily sightings of them. I also believe they have accepted my presence.
    Ideal for filming!!!

    Stunning! Thank you! I have sometimes thought about the relative merits of wildlife here and in other countries. I spent the early 25 years of my life in the Peak District and was fortunate to have many acres of land to explore. The variety of incredible wildlife there - and further afield in the hidden valleys and dales that tourists don't find - was exceptional. The silent flight of the barn owl at dusk for me matches any gaudy parrot screeching in a jungle; the joy of spying on the fox about his prowl beats any lion on the savannah. And the sight of two hares boxing is for me equal to any kangaroos doing the same! I would venture to suggest that your film proves these points admirably!
    I wish I had been able to film some of the amazing things I saw in those days...

    This is awesome. I told my sister in-law who teaches fifth grade about it. After seeing it she hopes to be able to show it to her school. What a wonderful piece of luck! I thought back to when I was 8 and just moved to a suburban neighborhood full of similar such wonders, and then later on when I owned a bit of land filled with diverse animals, as it had been vacant about 15 yrs before I got it at auction.

    Thank you for this lovely reminder of the natural richness still available (just) in our British countryside. Over my 70+ years Ive been lucky enough to have seen all of the species you featured, other than the muntjac. But how much more scarce many of them have become! I was reminded of this hearing the yellowhammer in the soundtrack - I have never seen one in the six years I have lived and explored in Cornwall. Your sensitivity to the wild creatures and acute observations make this very special - as though one were almost having these intimate experiences oneself. So often such encounters are happenstance, but all the more precious for that.

    • @WildlifeInCloseUp
      @WildlifeInCloseUp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see yellowhammers nearly as much now, compared to when I made this film but they do still pop up in a few places - the last one I saw in the Hebrides.
      There was a short BBC nature series years ago called "Being There" which was at the back of mind while making this.

    Hey Steven, thanks for this, British countryside is the best in the world with its four seasons. I've been in Australia for 15 years now and it's the one thing I miss the most. The shot of the grass snake was excellent, I've never seen one before, only adders and slow worms, surprised how quickly it moved. The muntjacs I would always see driving through Thetford Forest, originally from India or China I think, and as for the Red Kites, after they were reintroduced into the Oxford area, I could count up to a dozen in the air whilst driving up the M40, beautiful birds, imagine them landing in your garden on the bird feeder lol. Keep up the good work, cheers(with envy)🍻

    Excellent videography and storyline. I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you, it should definitely have more views. As an amateur video enthusiast, it always puzzles me how the pros managed to get so smooth footage tracking the flying birds and other fast moving animals. Seems like the fast-flying bird just stays in the middle of the screen as if the camera was locked to it. Very impressive. I assume professional gear helps a bit, but a mid-range fluid head doesn't seem to do the trick for me at all, so a massive amount of hours on the field might help with learning. :) Do you share your filming tips or gear recommendations anywhere online, or do you recommend a source?

      I don't share any tips anywhere yet, sorry. The main trick with birds flying is practice, practice, practice. Once you get to be able to keep it in the frame steadily that sort of goes into the back of your brain so you can then concentrate fiercely on keeping focus for just long enough to make a reasonable length take, once that is done the 3rd hurdle is to let it leave the frame before you lose the focus (or the framing). It helps too to know about the bird so you can guess what it might be about to do. A natural change in direction is a nicer way to end the shot than to simply stop following it (the latter being much easier). You need to slow the footage down too, x2 is the bare minimum and is the rate I used in all of this film for the flying shots. That particular camera could not slow things down any more than that. In Wildlife TV shows we slow it down much more but personally I think it is over-done and loses its realism too much. On the equipment side you need a very smooth fluid head (Sachtler has been my choice for decades but Ronford and Oconnor are other industry favourites), the camera attached to it on a sliding balance plate and set as low down as possible. Then a very light grasp of the pan handle and the lens, be relaxed. A sighting device is good - I use a simple scrap of stiff electrical wire attached to the lens hood with an office spring clip, which my left eye uses to find the subject quickly while the right eye is looking through the camera viewfinder. I wouldn't manage it without a good separate viewfinder mounted beside and near the front of the camera. Also don't be too close to the subject otherwise you will have to move your body much further around the tripod, tripping over the legs etc! That means long telephoto lenses and small camera sensor (or heavily cropped large sensor) to get decent close ups. Oh, the list goes on.
      This film was shot in standard definition before HD camcorders became affordable but the subsequent two films I made out of my own pocket were both with a Sony EX3 and Sigma 150-600 Sport zoom. Birds flying were shot at 720/60p and scaled up and slowed down to 1080/25p. The exception was a barn owl hunting in the Meadows film that was shot at 100-150fps with a Sony A6300 and an Alphatron HDMI viewfinder but I wouldn't recommend it due to the large sensor.

    Hi Stephen, amazing work, thank you. I'm producing a video on George Orwell which touches on his talents as a naturalist. Would you mind if I included several snippets of your footage? I will happily credit and link your video in the description. Thanks for letting me know

      Yes, no problem if can link, thank you. I'm a big fan of Orwell and will watch. This film was not shot in HD so you might find slightly better quality images elsewhere on my channel (the RIver and Meadow documentaries are both HD originated).

    Absolutely wonderful….I’ve not seen a documentary this good in years….I used to live amongst it all in the chilterns and Bristol and Devon….Manchester lacks much I’m afraid though there’s still plenty to look out for….the geographical difference in wildlife is very apparent. Please does anyone know where this film is situated?

      It was mostly filmed in Oxfordshire, the exception being the hares boxing in Wiltshire near where I was brought up.
