Fena has some great character interaction. One benchmark you don't often see met is interuptions and talking on top of each other. Obviously in a condensed story format you can't do that too often but here there are moments where multiple characters are having their own discussions right on top of each other. Each one clamouring for the audience's focus. It feels so organic and I love it.
And in the newest episode, one of the characters walks past the camera as two others are having a conversation, it really makes it feel as if the characters are doing their own things off camera, not just standing still. Makes them feel like actual people.
It has fun banter between the characters, which you rarely see these days. Shitan's snarky brotherly comments to Yukimaru are a hoot. "Spoken like a true virgin," etc.
Fena: Pirate princess makes me so nostalgic to the early 2000's adventure anime like Secret of Cerulean Sand. its such a breath of fresh air for adventure anime in a sea (pun intended) of isekai fantasy stories
If you like Fena and are fed up of Isekai fantasy stories, you should check out Rage of Bahamut (at least S1 aka the good season). It has a similar vibe to it, so you might like it.

Toonami is a good time to toon in with something new they have to offer, and Crunchyroll and Adult Swim working together? I never thought it'll work, but I love that I idea!
The animation style reminds me of Children of The Whales.
The idaten art style is so refreshing to watch, I've enjoyed every single episode of it so far
Idaten Deities has seriously been my personal "anime of the season" (no, not anime of the year) but I haven't watched Fena: Pirate Princess. Going off this review I'll actually give it a legit chance now. I didn't previously because, well, Cruchyroll Originals don't... Have the best batting rating, but I guess they CAN be good when put in the hands of the right people. So I'll check it out for sure now.

While I would love to see an apology video I'm assuming he hasn't mentioned it because it's a sequel and if you liked the first season (which he has a video on) you're probably watching this one and if you didn't then he probably won't convince you anyways.

Most anime youtubers never mention the actual good shows. They just take mediocre to bad shows like this and call them good because they're obscure/not being watched because they aired so late.

Fena: Pirate Princess' animation has major Walt Disney vibes. It's like a love letter to the style that Disney has since abandoned and forgotten. I highly recommend it.
Pirate Princess is beautifully illustrated but it never made me think of classic Disney animation

It probably helps that its setting feels more like Pirates of the Caribbean with samurai and ninjas than other pirate anime like One Piece.
For me the Disney vibes come less from the animation and more from the story. Fena herself reminds me of a modern Disney princess like Rapunzel from Tangled
@@dani007a That for sure is part of it, some of the older films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella don't share much if anything in common with Fena, but I still see the art style of Fena in some of the later films like Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin, and The Princess and the Frog. It also has a big resemblance to Tangled just using 2D animation instead of 3D.
Honestly, Fena is exactly what I needed to help me forget that Disney will likely never again make an animated film using 2D animation almost exclusively.
For all of you who skipped To Your Eternity, it just ended recently and WOW! Watch that too, if you haven’t.
That last episode was actually amazing. I give the first season a 9.5/10 (only because the last arc was not as good but still great)

I would argue that you CAN in fact be historically accurate about pirates while injecting Ninjas into the mix. Its actually pretty simple: ninja pirates. Or pirate ninjas.
Not kidding, there was a ninja clan that was specifically dedicated to missions at sea, making them real life pirate ninjas

Even aside from that context having pirates and samurai meet wouldn't be historically inaccurate. Piracy was not a Caribbean exclusive endeavour, the Mediterranean, the African Guinea coast, the horn of Africa and most importantly for this the Malaccan straights and the surrounding area all had heavy pirate activity. Malacca was actually one of the most diverse places of piracy, mixing pirates from everywhere on earth. They had Europeans, east Africans, Arabs, Indians, east Asians, south east Asians etc. and since piracy was not an unheard of thing in Japan, it would not be surprising to have some Ronin that left Japan towards the south China sea encounter Western Pirates or like you suggested join a pirate crew to terrorise the east Indian Ocean and western pacific.
My god 'idaten deities know only peace' looks gorgeous.
He's not wrong about that opener being a fucking BANGER, either. Only one that comes close this season is Tsukimichi, IMO.

Fena: The Pirate Princess has caught and kept my attention so far.
Fena caugt me really off guard so late in the season. Its fantastic and is only getting better each episode. Hope they can keep this up. Really missed this kind of old school adventure Anime.
I cannot explain how glad I am you've mentioned "the idaten deities know only peace" It's extremely well paced and very entertaining, unlike all other anime in this season that have some ups and downs, this anime has kept me entertained throughout every minute of every episode.

Idaten is batshit crazy in the best way, and Fena is just outrageously entertaining, and I love them both *so* much!
Since i found the Idaten anime really interesting for its themes and how they were presented, i decided to check out the manga... i shouldn't have done that.

Its made by Interspecies reviewers mangaka. Id already expect some sick stuffs but wtf. They did toned down the stuffs in the anime but still wtf

Dark plot points with even darker subject matter is great with action and comedy since it invokes more feelings and in my opinion we need more these and less of the shows that stay soft or only beat around the bush . Reincarnated as a slime season 2 a great example of a show that was more kiddy like in season 1 but then season 2 took a darker tone and it is even better than first season imo . Same with shield hero as well .

Fun fact about Jahy-sama: The ED is sung by Aqua, Nene and Subaru from Hololive. That alone gave me reason to check the anime out.
Another fun fact: their names were censored from the credits in the chinese version :v

@@giornogiovanna8367 it's not just a matter of being mad, it's the government pressure to censor, harass, and discriminate against anything that the government (not the people) doesn't like.
The whole Coco stuff was stupid on a whole other level, but since their government branded Hololive as taboo, people there see the opportunity to continue the harassment and the stupid "anti" behaviour just to increase their social credit scores.
It makes me sad to see this happen, it's a gigantic country filled with people that are being denied their freedom unless they lick the government's boots every once in a while.

If you are not in the Vtuber community you probably never heard of it, but this whole drama was about a Vtuber that literally just said the word "Taiwan" while naming countries that were listed in her TH-cam analytics, and that was enough to start a mass Chinese uprising that resulted in the disband of Hololive China (a brand of the Hololive Company that Kiryu worked for, but focused on Chinese viewers), mass spam in Coco's chat, and a bunch of angry Chinese babies.
Fun fact: the only reason that Taiwan showed up in her ratings AT ALL was the fact that the Chinese needed a VPN to donate to Coco, and the logical country to select in the VPN due to low ping and similar language is Taiwan...

I started reading Mashle about a week or so ago and I'm already almost caught up. This manga is gonna hit it big once the anime eventually gets announced.

I love how a simple change of color scheme can do so much for a show's style. Idaten's lineart isn't even all that unusual for an anime but the color and shading make it really stand out.
It's about time you talked about idaten deities.. I know you're gonna make some lame mappa joke, but the show is seriously amazing. It has some jujutsu kaisen level cuts sometimes. Really amazing staff behind the series

I like Fena for if nothing else being an Anime that actually premieres on American tv. Almost unheard of except some of the classic western anime like Avatar or something

Is it drawn by the same person who made One Punch Man and Mob Psycho? Cause the artstyle looks way too similar to be someone else.
@@kaitoalkan I looked it up because I wondered the same thing. Mashle is written by Hajime Kōmoto, while Mob Psycho 100 is written by ONE. Still, looks pretty similar.

Right now I'm on the process of finishing and or watching the animes that i missed from the last 3 seasons. So I'm very much enjoying this slow season
Fena is a prime example of when the right group's fund for quality.
I had severe doubts about Fena: Pirate Princess, so I'm very glad you cleared up my misgivings! I'm excited to watch it now!

Fena: The Pirate Princess is probably one of the anime from this season I'm motivated to watch, it just reminds me of when I. first started watching anime and gives off the vibe I really missed. Basically, I'm already in love with it.

Do I like listening to people rave about good anime? Yes
Does Mashle sound hilariously good? YES

So I just finished watching all episodes about all 3 recomendations and as always youre on point, now my saturdays are full with 6 animes series and my tuesday finally has an anime in it with Idaten.

Wow can't believe every single show you talked about here I immediately want to see.
Idaten ends ep 1 with a stylized “gang seku assault” and the survivor shows up again in I think ep 3 or 4 where she is assaulted again, complimented on her willpower for still being sane after the initial assault by her current assailant, but the survivor’s facial animation is the “cute embarrassment” coded blushing of frustration or struggle with inhibitions instead of something that might have more clearly communicated the horror of the scene. I give a lot of art a pass on seku assault themes bc I want to be able to place it in a context. GS opening scene firmly establishes the antagonists and places the audience in a position to later question “is saving a city from a dragon etc really more important than preventing -that-?”
But I have a limit and it’s once. If you tap that well for shock value again or worse, make it seem like the survivors of the assault may actually enjoy it or it’s played for laughs, I’m out. Idaten lost me when that nun reappeared nude in a cage. I already knew the bad guys were bad, they drew a clear line of “evil army is driven by demons” it didn’t need to be shown again and there isn’t a justification I’ll accept that required it.

Yup, I noped out after ep 2. Just seemed to be in bad taste/exploitative. If the gods don't care about human suffering why the f would I care about them?
I disagree with Goblin Slayer's opening scene, as it maintains a poor continuity between the girl being cleaved with axes and beaten with clubs, only for her skin to be completely bare during the sexual assault. Why take away wounds for a scene meant to demonstrate the horror of the act itself.
And let's not even go into how contrived the situation was in the first place.

Because the term loli is gross and carries sexual connotations.
Meh, doesn't have to be sexual, and it's plenty easy to distinguish fiction from reality regardless for those characters which are so commonly sexualized! Like hey I know Furry's exist, totally 100% not my thing, not all anthro/furry characters are sexualized... But the ones that are I avoid like the plague and say to each their own!
@@goldeyeblue loli is derived from lolita which is explicitly sexualisation of children. Using the term loli implies sexualisation. Just use a different word.
I get the etymology and why such sexual connotations from it may be unfortunate... But this is such a common word used to describe such a character in the medium, for characters both sexualized and non-sexualized that it has lost that meaning in a sense! Keep in mind there is also the tradition of Gothic Lolita as a style which is separate from the book, which also inspired the term in a way, even though there are plenty a Loli character who are just a young looking character and not inspired by such Victorian Style! I have plenty of friends who use the term Loli on the regular who will say "don't lewd the Loli, Loli's are for headpats" etc, and I have friends who are Lolicon degenerates, and both can get along and rib each other for the most part! We can call Jahy a Loli and not lewd her, cause for the most part, the show isn't, and you don't have to worry about that unless you go looking for fanart with your personal blacklists or filters turned off... Cause realistically the term is pretty ubiquitous in the anime community, and these being fictional characters it's far and away beyond benign, unlike say for example referring to a minority status person by some antiquated and unfortunate term that they actively will tell you they don't approve of!
Now take a term like Trap for example, then you at least have a discussion, is this character cross dressing or are they trans, or are they in some other way LGBT, how do real life trans and LGBT people feel about this, ok some genuine Nazi's have used the word as a slur that's yikes! At the same time other trans people debate whether to reject the term or take it back and empower it on their own terms, then there are fears of it being used to enforce a gay panic defense mentality! In that regard I choose to use that term as one of endearment for characters like Astolfo, while acknowledging no Lily from Zombieland Saga is not a Trap she's a genuine trans girl acknowledged by her friends, the show, and those around her! With Loli sure there's a history to the word that has a connotation, but no one is using it that way to effect real life persons and it has developed in the lexicon a very casual and benign meaning and use as well! I mean look at Kanna, Ravioli Ravioli don't lewd the Dragon Loli! The meme there is, "she's cute and precious, don't you dare twist her in such a way"!

When all the episodes of Fena: Pirate Princess finish airing I'll watch it then even though it kind of bugs me how it's not historically accurate with it pirate setting but at least there is One Piece that is 100% historically accurate with its pirate setting.
I do wish they’d lean more into period-esque costumes especially seeing as this seems to be a semi-historical Earth rather than an Earth-like alternate world like One Piece. And it seems to be just a meme at this point that the inventor girl is just casually inventing post-industrial technologies.
My personal recommendation for watching Jahy-sama:
Watch Hataraku Maou-sama! instead!

There's something oddly nostalgic about Fena that has me absolutely enamored with it and I can't quite put my finger on where the sense of nostalgia is coming from
Gotta disagree with "That contrast serves a purpose" for Idaten. There's a million ways to show "world bad" that don't involve explicit, onscreen sexual assault. Hell, episode 2 has them, the Nazi stand-ins are executing civilians, committing atrocities. The point of the scene when you look at the rest of the story was that the author wanted to put an explicit rape scene in, and I don't think that's worth sidestepping in the name of "It shows off how grimdark things are and how the gods don't care."
To me, the show as a whole felt like ecchi made by a sick guy (really, rape & CP?) masked behind a fake-deep narrative, which makes sense considering the resume of the creator

Mashle is a fun read for sure. When Super Eyepatch Wolf pitched it as "Rock Lee vs the wizards" I was on board.
After last season was so jam packed with good anime I kind of started a lot this summer but only stuck with a couple. Maybe one of these shows will give me a good kick to pick up the pace. Fena looks like a lot of fun.
Thank you SO MUCH for bringing attention to Fena: Pirate princess because it's a GREAT show so far and no one seems to be talking about. Hopefully it can stick the landing.

I love Mashle! I remember joking to a friend "What if Asta never got the 5 Leaf Grimoire, and he just punched his way through through everything with brute force" and a few months later I found out it was actually a thing! I just bought and read Volume 1 a few days ago and just preordered volume 2 earlier tonight. Imagine the Concept of Black Clover, in the setting of Harry Potter, with the Comedy of One Punch Man/Saiki K/Misfit of Demon King Academy
I can't remember the last time I was eagerly anticipating each new episode of a show as much as I am with Fena
