They don't have the full scope of the story. Sometimes they might not even be given the full script. It makes sense not to have the Little Green Men here. In Toy Story they were only found in a Pizza Planet crane game. Within that context, they were likely Pizza Planet mascot characters, and had no relation to Buzz Lightyear. It's only the spinoff show that puts them in the same universe. Overall, don't try to think too hard about where this falls in the Pixar timeline. The Unified Pixar Theory is crack fanfiction at best. This is a movie about Buzz Lightyear that Andy saw when he was a kid. That's all it is. I could totally see a Woody's Roundup D+ series, but I hope they don't actually try and do a Howdy Doody show. Personally, I think a meta show that shows the creation, filming, and eventual decline of the series would be interesting. Otherwise, if they want to do something totally not related, Woody's design in Disney's Mirrorverse is really good, and a Western with that character could do well.
I loved this movie! I've always wanted to see Buzz Lightyear's space adventures in full scale CG! It's filled with awesome action, glorious eye-candy and memorable characters. And Chris Evans is a great successor of Tim Allen!
I get that people are mad (and confused (?) even though the opening crawl of the movie explains the movie's existence outright) that this isn't a Toy Story proper movie or that there are a few inconsistencies in the narrative as it relates to the TS universe. But seriously...a solid movie is still a solid movie. And it WAS solid. Lightyear is NOT bad. Not by any stretch of the imagination. And it saddens me that people seem to dislike this so much. I mean, if I were to get hung up on every discrepancy in every new Marvel movie/TV show that comes out, I'd hate the MCU. And I'd be robbing myself of a LOT of good cinema for no real reason. Personally, I'm glad it exists. And I glad it came out in theaters instead of streaming so that it has a very good chance of being released on Blu-ray for me to purchase. Enjoy what we have people. Because when you don't support the good things but keep giving money to trash...well...that's why we keep getting these god awful minions movies.
The original buzzlight year cartoon should have been brought to the movie . I don’t understand why they didn’t bring it back . The show had aliens and a huge universe . Sometimes if you can’t make the new story better leave it alone. I just don’t see how you can make an amazing back story boring .
Uh... toy buzz emerges from his box as opening scene buzz. Both characters go on a journey of self discovery, but the adventure and outcome is different. Which fits perfectly with the films theme. Different events and revolations make you a different person.
Ah yes, as we have seen from Sci-Fi regularly, how they always accurately predict the habits and ideas of the future, as opposed to being informed by what they THINK will be the future still informed by the current time, so obviously a film in 1990s/80s whatever, would clearly have an idea of the sense of humor, progressiveness and technology that is in the now of 2022. That much already takes me out of the idea since this is way too accurate to feel like something that would have came out in that time. And of course, this super popular movie only advertised the lead character, because we know how the 80s and 90s were famous for their minimal marketing and never sometimes giving even the smallest of characters an action figure at the bare minimum, especially the clearly marketable cat character that they put so much emphasis on, clearly wouldn't get a toy. And while Minions is going to utterly dominate the next month when it comes out next week, at least Lightyear can say it will not be as sad a showing as Paramount thinking an animated film that's been on the back burner for the good half of a decade is worth actually putting in theaters than streaming.
In that sense, Lightyear is a reboot of the franchise, and Andy is taking his son to see it. The kid will be super excited, but Andy will leave the theater with a tinge of melancholy, since it's not the Buzz he grew up with. Such is life.

From what I've been hearing about this movie, it doesn't even FEEL like a movie that would've come out in the 90s or really feel like a Buzz Lightyear movie at all. It just feels exactly like one of those soulless, 'progressive' reboots of a beloved IP made for 2022. The whole "it's the movie that Andy would've seen" thing was probably a complete afterthought on their part for forgetting that Buzz was supposed to be based on a 90s toy this movie "inspired".
Yea I don’t remember the last time I went to Walmart and hoped the cashier was gay. I’m not sure what you mean by the past toy stories not being progressive. They are toys. I’m not sure how many gay families you know personally with kids but it’s not as common as it is or has been in every Disney or marvel movie in the last 2 years. I agree it is forced and rushed but to say the past toy stories were not progressive or inclusive is strange. I’m Hispanic and I never thought toy story was missing a mariachi band. Why did they have to use Chris Evans as the voice though, his voice is bland and generic compared Tim Allen. Tim Allens voice is unique and interesting, with character behind it, meanwhile Chris Evans can easily just be swapped out for any other heterosexual white America. People complain about Chris Pratt as a voice actor, but at least he sounds like he is feeling some emotion other than boredom.

Honestly, I feel like it was originally written as an origin story for the inspiration for the toy (like Chris Evans' tweet), then halfway through production they changed it, but never considered the fact that it just made it even more confusing...
Just have Andy be a writer at Pixar. The whole movie could be drafts as Andy puts together his first movie. He remembers some of the play times he had with his toys and tries to recreate that.
My theory is that buzz lightyear is a character that’s in the public domain within the Pixar universe and that’s why the buzz show and buzz movie are so different

In universe, this is the FICTIONAL movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story series. Time travel doesn't exist in the Toy Story world.

I haven’t watched a movie, but it doesn’t sound like it’s that bad of a story from what I’ve heard from reviews, but at the same time I’ve heard a lot more criticisms that do create valid points about the flaws of the movie. I guess I’m now in the middle ground, neutral view for the movie until I watch it for myself soon.
Basically if you were to remove the branding it would be unrecognizable from its toy story origins. If you were to remove tom cruise and the title, you'd have people commenting that the new movie is incredibly similar to Top Gun. Likewise for the new Jurassic movie and Minions. You're not going to get that from lightyear.
I have not looked up any facts for this so i wanna make clear that this is purely my own personal impression based on experience and knowledge in terms of a lot of things so my source is literally called "trust me bro": I most certainly see why people may have disliked it and honestly, most of the many, many, MANY negative reviews relied almost purely on the fact the political correctness (aka woke(ness)) once again got shoved all our throats. Yes, the best friend of MCs obviously has to be not only black, but also lesbian and thats where my question comes: Who the fuck cares? Like, what difference does it make? What actual impact does both the sexuality and skin color have on the story that is being told? I don't even think that writing those characters as a literal plot device with targeted emotional impact as a passive effect is not a bad decision; although i have to agree that it's cliché and the execution to actually make memoriable characters lacked unique personality. I don't mean that the crew people have no personality but i do want to say that they are fucking 1 dimensional and the 3 seconds screen time within a certain redemption arc does not make up for past 1 hour annoynment, just like Darth Jar Jar. Another half negative reviews complain about the movie being awfully inaccurate when it comes to Toy Story established lore. I must say: I liked it. It felt like they made effort into making the plot make sense, despite the political agenda very modern form of media obligatorily has to have. Of course i am aware of "yeah theres no logical way out here but THATS what the robot cat (which will sell too good to be true) is here for.- just like our youtuber said "R2D2" treatment Despite those things which is not all to be honest i can write another paragraph with important stuff actually but anyway.. My personal headcanon likes to believe that this is simply the first movie of Buzz Lightyear in universe and inside the 10 year frame from 85 to 95 were sequels released which honestly i would also fucking love to get to watch too
I enjoyed the movie. Thought the call backs were nice. The whole thing about THIS being the movie Andy saw could’ve just been removed and was completely unnecessary. Should’ve just been a Buzz Lightyear stand alone movie. 7/10
I personally think that Buzz saying father? When Zurg was revealed was the only thing that processed through Andy's head at the time because I don't think Andy would have understood all of the time travel that was happening.

But I like to think that all of the adventures they have are actually just Andy's imagination of playing time with his toys. I also liked how right after the reveal of Zurg being Buzz's father they played catch, something Andy probably wanted since his father doesn't appear.
Has no one really caught that the Zycklops look and sound an awful lot like the robots from the Atari game Berzerk?!! And and even Buzz uniform is the inverted colors from the guy in the cover of the game which was orange and white... Then when there was a chase scene inside the ship that, was it for me... Lightyear is a movie about one of the best Atari games...

If Buzz lightyear was actually time accurate, they shouldn't have put on any of the same sex relationship(since you know 1990's and people weren't still as welcoming back then as they are today especially for a kids movie that was supposed to show at that time. Add the fact that the film really didn't feel like a 1990's action movie. Imo they should have just made an ode to the action movie of the era, and just slapped on Buzz lightyear as the main story. Now not to discredit the importance of representation in animated movies, but is a Buzz Lightyear film really the best place to do that? I mean if your going to do an animated movie and have representation then go all out, make the main character Non-binary and exploring what this human experience truly is about. Why are they afraid of giving a nonbinary character the spotlight as the Main character?

Clearly the director didn't know what he was doing. He's no kevin feige in making universes, sure marvel has it's own issues, but at the least they sort of make it work. But here's what he should've said when asked about the different actors. Since this was the movie the toys were based off of, he could've said that when the toy was released, they used Tim Allen's voice because Evans tried to bargain for a higher pay for his voice on the toys. Done. While I don't know how much tim allen is worth per filn or per voice role, but they can just try to say that excuse.

I have no idea why people hate this movie or think it’s a flop. I just watched this movie and I thought it was great. It even made me tear up a bit and the cinematography was amazing, of course. I really liked how they handled the callbacks and the characters, it was just a fun time. I think people look way into deep in movies, cause it’s NEVER that serious. Especially, a children’s movie. Just sit down, be quiet, and enjoy the movie.

As a parent, i loved the film for introducing some heavy sci-fi concepts (like generation ships and time dilation) to my kids. As a child of the 80s, though, I feel like Pixar missed an opportunity to fix their timeline and make this film truly exceptional with a single change. Let me explain. This is ostensibly a film that came out in the 80s, so they should have focused on making it LOOK LIKE ONE instead of maintaining their commitment to eye popping visuals. Grainy film filters, faux miniature shots, guy in a suit monsters would have made this a truly charming period piece instead of the generic sci-fi with great visuals that we got. The story could have been exactly the same, shot for shot and beat for beat but if the graphics were more O.G. George Lucas than J.J. Abrams, or more Alien than Alien: Covenant, they would have had a true classic on their hands. They've done it before in the Toy Story universe with Andy's home movies and Woody's TV show! If they did that for an entire film, it could have been something truly special and more consistent with what they claim they were trying to do. TL;DR--They should have done it like Black Dynamite did, imo.

3:40 "I wanted to make a a scifi action film." therein lies the problem. This was a movie that was crippled by the very system that birthed it. It's so clear watching it that the team could not divorce themselves from the Pixar formula, either thru corpepate meddling or just working within the studio for so long I wonder if it shouldn't have been made with a new "studio" title to free itself from the weight of the brand.
My problem is people treat the Toy Story movies like they are Gold and they've been littered with problems since the second one. If you see the series for what it is, Lightyear is just fine. Pixar is great, but yall act like every movie hits so hard, like Good Dinosaur doesnt exist or whatever.
I honestly feel like too many people are getting caught up on the ties to the toy story universe. All the comments are "yeah I highly doubt blah blah blah" but it was literally just a couple of sentences at the beginning of the movie and some messy marketing. If you take it out of the equation, the movie is just a fun hero's journey in space. The animation was incredible and I think Evans honestly did a really good job.
I like scifi as much as the next person but I felt no reason to go to theaters to watch this I'll see this at home that being said I am more on board for a red dead movie with woody that would be much cooler

Why not just write good characters instead of "plot devices"? It's supposed to be a kid's film. No politics in freaking kid's movies. Would've liked to seen this but leave that out. Just like Marvel preaching. No thanks.

Honestly, I feel like it was originally written as an origin story for the inspiration for the toy (like Chris Evans' tweet), then halfway through production they changed it, but never considered the fact that it just made it even more confusing...

I'm still confused on whether this is supposed to be based on the real Buzz in universe or if it's the toy... If it's the real Buzz I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that time travel exists casually in the backdrop of the Toy Story universe.
In universe, this is the FICTIONAL movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story series. Time travel doesn't exist in the Toy Story world.

I haven’t watched a movie, but it doesn’t sound like it’s that bad of a story from what I’ve heard from reviews, but at the same time I’ve heard a lot more criticisms that do create valid points about the flaws of the movie. I guess I’m now in the middle ground, neutral view for the movie until I watch it for myself soon.

Basically if you were to remove the branding it would be unrecognizable from its toy story origins.
If you were to remove tom cruise and the title, you'd have people commenting that the new movie is incredibly similar to Top Gun. Likewise for the new Jurassic movie and Minions. You're not going to get that from lightyear.
I have not looked up any facts for this so i wanna make clear that this is purely my own personal impression based on experience and knowledge in terms of a lot of things so my source is literally called "trust me bro":
I most certainly see why people may have disliked it and honestly, most of the many, many, MANY negative reviews relied almost purely on the fact the political correctness (aka woke(ness)) once again got shoved all our throats. Yes, the best friend of MCs obviously has to be not only black, but also lesbian and thats where my question comes: Who the fuck cares? Like, what difference does it make? What actual impact does both the sexuality and skin color have on the story that is being told? I don't even think that writing those characters as a literal plot device with targeted emotional impact as a passive effect is not a bad decision; although i have to agree that it's cliché and the execution to actually make memoriable characters lacked unique personality. I don't mean that the crew people have no personality but i do want to say that they are fucking 1 dimensional and the 3 seconds screen time within a certain redemption arc does not make up for past 1 hour annoynment, just like Darth Jar Jar.
Another half negative reviews complain about the movie being awfully inaccurate when it comes to Toy Story established lore.
I must say: I liked it. It felt like they made effort into making the plot make sense, despite the political agenda very modern form of media obligatorily has to have. Of course i am aware of "yeah theres no logical way out here but THATS what the robot cat (which will sell too good to be true) is here for.- just like our youtuber said "R2D2" treatment

My personal headcanon likes to believe that this is simply the first movie of Buzz Lightyear in universe and inside the 10 year frame from 85 to 95 were sequels released which honestly i would also fucking love to get to watch too
The retcon of Zurg not being Buzz's Father is gonna be like Mike and Sully not knowing each other in third grade.
I enjoyed the movie. Thought the call backs were nice. The whole thing about THIS being the movie Andy saw could’ve just been removed and was completely unnecessary. Should’ve just been a Buzz Lightyear stand alone movie. 7/10

I personally think that Buzz saying father? When Zurg was revealed was the only thing that processed through Andy's head at the time because I don't think Andy would have understood all of the time travel that was happening.

But I like to think that all of the adventures they have are actually just Andy's imagination of playing time with his toys. I also liked how right after the reveal of Zurg being Buzz's father they played catch, something Andy probably wanted since his father doesn't appear.

For me the most unrealistic bit was how in the Toy Story universe there were Buzz toys but not cat toys-
thing is, no matter the franchise it comes from, a talking, supportive cat toy will sell too fucking well to even notice it was there
Has no one really caught that the Zycklops look and sound an awful lot like the robots from the Atari game Berzerk?!! And and even Buzz uniform is the inverted colors from the guy in the cover of the game which was orange and white... Then when there was a chase scene inside the ship that, was it for me... Lightyear is a movie about one of the best Atari games...

I'm not trying to be hateful to the LGBT community but.... If Buzz lightyear was actually time accurate, they shouldn't have put on any of the same sex relationship(since you know 1990's and people weren't still as welcoming back then as they are today especially for a kids movie that was supposed to show at that time. Add the fact that the film really didn't feel like a 1990's action movie. Imo they should have just made an ode to the action movie of the era, and just slapped on Buzz lightyear as the main story.
Now not to discredit the importance of representation in animated movies, but is a Buzz Lightyear film really the best place to do that? I mean if your going to do an animated movie and have representation then go all out, make the main character Non-binary and exploring what this human experience truly is about. Why are they afraid of giving a nonbinary character the spotlight as the Main character?

Clearly the director didn't know what he was doing. He's no kevin feige in making universes, sure marvel has it's own issues, but at the least they sort of make it work.
But here's what he should've said when asked about the different actors. Since this was the movie the toys were based off of, he could've said that when the toy was released, they used Tim Allen's voice because Evans tried to bargain for a higher pay for his voice on the toys. Done. While I don't know how much tim allen is worth per filn or per voice role, but they can just try to say that excuse.
I watched this movie at a giant IMAX theater (the one in Lincoln Square NYC) and those scenes that expanded were breathtaking

I have no idea why people hate this movie or think it’s a flop. I just watched this movie and I thought it was great. It even made me tear up a bit and the cinematography was amazing, of course. I really liked how they handled the callbacks and the characters, it was just a fun time. I think people look way into deep in movies, cause it’s NEVER that serious. Especially, a children’s movie. Just sit down, be quiet, and enjoy the movie.

As a parent, i loved the film for introducing some heavy sci-fi concepts (like generation ships and time dilation) to my kids.
As a child of the 80s, though, I feel like Pixar missed an opportunity to fix their timeline and make this film truly exceptional with a single change. Let me explain.
This is ostensibly a film that came out in the 80s, so they should have focused on making it LOOK LIKE ONE instead of maintaining their commitment to eye popping visuals. Grainy film filters, faux miniature shots, guy in a suit monsters would have made this a truly charming period piece instead of the generic sci-fi with great visuals that we got. The story could have been exactly the same, shot for shot and beat for beat but if the graphics were more O.G. George Lucas than J.J. Abrams, or more Alien than Alien: Covenant, they would have had a true classic on their hands. They've done it before in the Toy Story universe with Andy's home movies and Woody's TV show! If they did that for an entire film, it could have been something truly special and more consistent with what they claim they were trying to do.
TL;DR--They should have done it like Black Dynamite did, imo.

3:40 "I wanted to make a a scifi action film." therein lies the problem. This was a movie that was crippled by the very system that birthed it.
It's so clear watching it that the team could not divorce themselves from the Pixar formula, either thru corpepate meddling or just working within the studio for so long
I wonder if it shouldn't have been made with a new "studio" title to free itself from the weight of the brand.
My problem is people treat the Toy Story movies like they are Gold and they've been littered with problems since the second one. If you see the series for what it is, Lightyear is just fine. Pixar is great, but yall act like every movie hits so hard, like Good Dinosaur doesnt exist or whatever.
I honestly feel like too many people are getting caught up on the ties to the toy story universe. All the comments are "yeah I highly doubt blah blah blah" but it was literally just a couple of sentences at the beginning of the movie and some messy marketing. If you take it out of the equation, the movie is just a fun hero's journey in space. The animation was incredible and I think Evans honestly did a really good job.
With the cat, Disney clearly saw another merchandising opportunity... In fact this whole film is all about selling more toys......
