I'm 57, and I am really disheartened that all those strains we knew growing up in the 70's and 80's are virtually extinct... no more red-haired California Sinsimilla, or true Skunk, Columbian Gold, etc. Everything now just seems to be like GMO weed or something. The strains of today just aren't the same as the herb I grew up with.
@@skipgrumblisfor sure. Now that growing is legal in Ohio, I'm going to start collecting a bunch of the old strains. I want to start with growing some classic Mexican Sativa strains. I hear Oaxacan Gold is a good one.
I have to say, growing up in Eugene really allowed me a vast library of strains to try. Even though I didn't start smoking cannabis until the mid 2000's, I still had access to a lot of old school growers who still had rare strains. DJ shorts blueberry was always in large supply, especially in October when the outdoor growers harvest. Apparently my grandmother had a massive collection of seeds too, she'd talk about it all the time. But unfortunately they weren't labeled and probably not stored correctly. She passed away about 2 years back, I would have loved to pop some of those seeds with her. RIP Grandma
If they were kept in a cool place some may well still be viable, if you still have access to them of course. When you buy seeds online there is no guarantee that they have been stored in cool enough conditions and no guarantee that they aren't already a few years old.
Split a lb of Highland Oaxacan in '75. It imprinted it's flavor and effects on my brain. Have been looking for it for 45 years. Colombian Gold and Acapulco Gold were excellent as well but I loved the Oaxacan. DJ has been around longer than some other famous growers. He has first hand experience with those irreplaceable tropical strains, so he knows what many of us old-timers crave most. Very enjoyable video. Thanks!

I'm 65 and I don't know who MADE Blueberry, but we used to get it on occasion, from Mexico. Lots of old landrace plants had incredible and incredibly-strong smelling and tasting plants. Many of them had a kind of skunky blueberry smell. If you saved seeds like most of us did, and grew them out, then you'd be very likely to get a skunk blueberry smelling plant from them. I never remember lemon or pine in anything back then. It was mostly skunk and blueberry....sometimes an earthy/peatmoss, too. Then they bred it all away because it was easy to sniff out grows with those kinds of plants in them. And then over the years, the breeders changed all the "wolves" into "chihuahuas". I know they are trying to get back to those old smells again....but I've never seen anyone take a chihuahua and turn it back into a wolf. ;)
I've never had the Blueberry from Cali/Mexico but i can tell you the stuff from the Cowichan valley would stick to the ceiling if you threw it up there.

He said his name was Daniel Joseph but friends called him DJ. I then realized who I was chatting with, told him I loved the blueberry but wished the yield was higher. We enjoyed some hash together and went about socializing. A very likeable and humble guy
I’m 62 and grew up in that era. One of my many stories that’s pretty special is my 2 years in Afghanistan. I made friends with an interpreter who was the son of a tribal chief. A true patriot; hated the Taliban. Regardless, the black hashish was the best…EVER. I also flew over miles and miles of Indica covering entire valleys. Oh to have some of those seeds. 😭
Love the Short 98 BlueBerry. I think the precussor was well established in Colorado around 95,96,97 and boy, that was some gas. If I am not mistaken Blue Dream was born of that, as well as Blue Cheese, but I could be mistaken. I was a grower from '93-'13, so ten years worth of breeding and cloning have passed me by. But my friends and our parents were happy to lay the groundwork for what is happening now. Started in Boulder, then Humboldt County, Bay Area, and Lake Tahoe. Was able to perfect the art in 4 different climates something I am extremely proud of. Made me who I am today. Thanks for the Video!!!! And loved that 98 Short.
I knew a guy in Tampa 20 years ago who grew in blueberries and it tasted like blueberry. He even did strawberry. He got old blueberries and strawberries from a farmer's market that were going to trash he put it in 5 gallon buckets and threw in some seeds and out came the tree .
Oh man, so much respect! Back in the day there was no internet to order all the shit you needed, you had to make do, often times with products that were less than ideal, you did whatever you had to.
Am not a lover of theses strains nowadays. 10 years back we would regularly pull 9 to 10 oz from a 4 foot plant , now I can only manage to do 6 oz dry weight. And sometimes less if am honest. I have 4 or 5 friends who like me have been doing this for 20 years or more and they say the same thing. The equipment for growing has got better that for sure, and back then there was no TH-cam or internet to learn from. People have it so easy and they still think they are hard done by.
This was an AWESOME episode!!! Definitely checking out his gear next run! Great job Banner and DGC! great interview. Very cool breeder!! And I'm gonna have to read that book about the jazz musicians. That is awesome history!! Being that I am a drummer myself. :)

He said his name was Daniel Joseph but friends called him DJ. I then realized who I was chatting with, told him I loved the blueberry but wished the yield was higher. We enjoyed some hash together and went about socializing. A very likeable and humble guy
I bought DJ Shorts book years and years ago when I was learning to grow his seeds. Bro is a Legend!!!!!
Thank you Dr. Short, I really enjoyed Blueberry Strains
Wow, what a special show!! DJ Short, the one & only, fantastic show guys!! Love my Blueberry cultivars!! One of my favorites!
Thank you Mr DJ for sharing ❤
What a legend! Super cool! Got some blueberry crosses in the tent as we speak, excited for harvest in a few weeks! Great interview guys🙌🏼
Had the pleasure of spending a weekend with him in LA when he started lecturing. Great guy, amazing breeder.
Shorts is talking all the Landraces that are very hard to find but are around ❤
Love it. Thanks guys. Pop more beans!
Thanks for the history and knowledge keep it coming
Hey! Out of the dozens of great strains I smoked last year in Northern California, Flo x The White (Flo White) was the best. May the Flo be with you.
This was an AWESOME episode!!! Definitely checking out his gear next run! Great job Banner and DGC! great interview. Very cool breeder!! And I'm gonna have to read that book about the jazz musicians. That is awesome history!! Being that I am a drummer myself. :)
We had that blueberry in NW Florida in the early 90’s still haven’t found the same one. 🌱💚
Much love DJ from a fellow grandpa grower❤
Best show yet! Great job Banner!
I popped the Blueberry from Dutch Passion in 2002 along with the White Widow and it was definitely some good cannabis.
This was a cool talk..i had his blueberry for 4years before i let it go great cultivar
I love DJ’s pure heart 🐈🌱🙏
Some breeders only judge smell in the bag, this list of effects is ground breaking.
