    I love your videos. It is difficult to select wines without having tasted, so if you buy by label, this will ever be a try and error. Wine fairs can help you to find your favourite wine variety or region. And don't listen to others, concentrate on your taste. I discovered a year ago, that I am a big fan of the Merlot variety. I had for a long time bad associations with this variety so I avoided it, but finally it is now my favourite variety.

    Here in France you mostly never see any information about variety, because the most important is the terroir.
    A name refer to a region and a specific location where the minerals of the soil will give the taste of the blend, more than the type itself.

    The word ‘Contrôlée" [controlled] (and its equivalents in other European languages) is being phased out in favour of the word "Protegée" (protected) [and equivalents]. This change is relatively recent, and AOC will still be used, but you may already have come across AOP on labels. On this level, the rules are unchanged. For lower classifications there are some rule changes alongside name changes.

    • @winefolly
      @winefolly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's interesting. I looked into this on a deep level at some point recently (like about a month ago). And on the French agricultural website, and on all their official docs, it looks like they're in no way getting rid of Contrôlée anytime soon. Just for all other agri-foods goods. I was disappointed when I found that out, because it makes it harder and more confusing for consumers with different nomenclature. I'm totally on board with AOP / PDO / PGI because they unify.

    Mam can u pls make a video regarding- what climate/soil require for a particular grape to grow, how climate/soil affects the wine, how grapes can be more taniin and acidic when grown in a particular type of climate and soil, like why cab. sab. from Bordeaux is different from Napa Valley what factors r responsible for the same and so on cz it is difficult to answer this type of questions and act as a hurdle to understand the concept of a particular region or area. I know I could look this up, but like to ask here (a trusted source for me), what is a "Super Tuscan?" Is it made up? Is it an Appellation? Should I try it?

    • @winefolly
      @winefolly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Super Tuscans usually use a made-up name. In fact, that wine I mention in the video, Sassacaia, is an example of a Super Tuscan. So what's a Super Tuscan? 👇
      Super Tuscans. "a wine that "supersedes" Italian wine law. This was the name wine writers and Italian producers used to describe Tuscan wines that include non-Italian grapes grapes (they're usually French grape blended wines that include Cab, Merlot, etc). Since these wines didn't use official regional grapes, they were declassified from Italy's DOC classification system to lowly Vino di Tavola (table wine). In was in 1992 that they created a designation "Toscana IGT" that would allow the wine to *at least* be regionally labeled. I'm pretty sure the first super Tuscan was Tignanello by Antinori… although, I'm sure someone is going to come out of the woodwork and call me out on that! ;)
      There are many "super Tuscans" now, and in fact, there are "super Lazios" and "super Umbrias" too!

    • @xXMatzeXx943
      @xXMatzeXx943 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lobow20 long sentences making short, "Super Tuscans" are the "best", most expensive and well known and wines in the toscana like:
      Tignanello, Masseto, Sassicia, Ornellaia, Solaia

    • @DustinTanski
      @DustinTanski 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there a good, bang for the buck, readily available one I should try?

    • @xXMatzeXx943
      @xXMatzeXx943 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DustinTanski yes and no! If you have the chance to try one, go for it. Some days ago, I had the chance to try a bottle of a 2012 Solaia. I was so disappointed and glad, that I haven't spend any cent for that "premium wine".
      The color was light red and brown, the smell was good (dark berries, chocolate, smoky but the taste....it taste like nothing. No fruit varieties, no noticeable tannins, no complexity no taste of the barrel or anything.
      That's just my opinion and experience. Try what you can, maybe you will find a better one but I think it's not worth the price.

    I'm getting into champagne at the moment. Those modern labels of the growers seem to be pretty fancy and tell you nothing about the wine.
    For example: "L’Apôtre", "L’Aphrodisiaque", "Arpège", "Efflorescence", "Anthocyanes", "Empreinte
    ", etc.
    I like it, though.

      @winesandtunes3495 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are they just some sort of blends?

    • @winefolly
      @winefolly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Natural wines are definitely the odd bird in wine right now because they often doesn't follow any of the conventions. I think the labeling methodology tries to speak to the uniqueness in that way by showing original art. And, for the unwary consumer expecting a passion-fruity Sauvignon Blanc, it can be strikingly off-putting! I think in this way, natural wines are the punk or metal of the wine world.

    • @whiskyapocalypse8144
      @whiskyapocalypse8144 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@winesandtunes3495 No, many are single grape bottles from tiny producers.
      Many though are shunning the codes of wine, particularly the French. Patrick Bouju just has "wine of France" on his labels, it's to break away from the rigidity of French wine.
      But it means you need to do your research.

    I don't like when people just make up a name. I want to know what is actually in the bottle. It drives me bonkers and won't even buy one anymore (unless I get to taste it first) if it only has a made up name and says Red or White because I've done that and found that it might even say on the bottle semi-dry or even dry and it tastes super sweet or visa-versa. So frustrating because it's a waste of my hard earned money to have to throw out something that tastes awful.
