Germinating Corn Seeds - To Plant in Pots or Check For Seed Viability.

  • It's still months till time to plant corn, but I wanted to check the viability of my Glass Gem Corn seeds that I grew, so I sprouted some seeds indoors.
    I used a paper towel, a small dish, and some water to get them to sprout. As an experiment, I also potted up a couple of the seeds to see how well they did once in some soil. They did very well, and I realized that getting two or three weeks head start on planting in the spring would be a pretty easy thing to do.

    Just germinated over 80 seeds this way, great method! And I had almost a 99% germination rate, so this is fantastic for my little corn patch - no more dropping 3 seeds in a hole and hoping, germinate first and have 1 plant guaranteed in every spot :)

    Did you used fresh corn on cob for germination? I bought corn seed from Amazon about $7.00 for 99 seeds not 100 as it said! I soaked them before planting, and found about 2 dozens seeds were cracked open on the skin part! That is the reason your corn looked perfect round and juicy. Hope to hear from you. Stay healthy

      @@MidwestGardener I did the same thing as you and it worked as described. I also bought one of those heat pads on Amazon and wrapped a few seeds in paper towels, shoved it in a zip lock bag and placed it on the heat pad. In 36 hours I had 1 inch roots. I've set up a spare room in my house as a green room. Lots of lights on timers and a decent window with full sun. I can't wait to start planting on the 25 Acres up here in Canada. I'll post my results.

    So I started to try this with sweet corn but my paper towel started to get moldy... what am I doing wrong?
    Also at the beginning stages, am I suppose to just leave them on the counter or put them under a grown light?
    I don’t see any sprouts yet and it’s been multiple days.
    Did I kill them?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long it takes to sprout also depends on temperature. If they are in a cool room, then it will take longer. Sometimes mold grows whether you want it to or not. There must just be more mold spores in the air. That can happen during rainy weather sometimes. I would give a while longer before I give up. If you get mold on the paper towel, just change it.

    Hi Jim. I have a question. Once the roots and leaf developed and you put the corn with your over-winter plants, did you need to put a damp paper towel over the top? I germinated mine in a paper towel and plastic bag and now They all have nice roots and the start of a leaf so I’m moving them to a situation like you have. Just curious if I still need to cover them or if the shallow water is enough now. Thank you!!!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jessica. Once they are sprouted and have some root and leaves started, I just put them in small containers until it's warm enough to transplant them outside. If it's already warm enough to plant outside, you can just put out in the garden.
