    Even though this was a joke it was actually refreshing to see someone unapologetically using premium tools and not making excuses or explaining other ways to do it. I do fine woodworking out of a cargo trailer with very limited tools but am still able to appreciate the pride that other people have in the tools they worked hard to earn. “I could make that spatula too if I had those tools!”

      @moeszyslack4676 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@lolaa2200 He isn't talking about the kids in 8th world crap holes making this commercially marketed stuff in stores. He's talking about one or two man shops that make a piece of furniture or housewares, and all the overhead involved. Much like when people complain about mechanics and what they charge, they fail to see the overhead associated with running a shop. Lease/mortgage, water/power, TOOLS, consumables, training, (and if an actual business --) insurance, taxes, wages, etc. all this applies to a mechanic, a woodworker, a machinist, etc.

      Oh boy do I hear you! Knitting is one of my various "makerish" pursuits. So many strangers have asked me to knit them socks after they've seen me working on a pair. I tell them they can't possibly afford it. When they protest I lay it out: "$30 for good quality wool, $10 for notions and approximately 12 hours of work at $15 minimum = $220 for a pair of hand knitted socks." It's fun to watch their faces.

    About 12 years ago, I made myself a spatula - hard maple with a much thinner edge than anything you can buy. And it cost a lot less than $33k.
    Maple scrap from the bin at the woodworking class I took. Not counting the class as I also made quite a few other things in class. $0
    Band saw left in the garage when my ex-husband moved out. He also left 2 metal lathes, a Bridgeport mill, several other very random tools, and a 5 foot tall stack (on the flat) of used marine plywood. I sold a lot of this (he took the mill). Negative $200
    A low end Lee Valley spokeshave, about $20
    A lot of sandpaper; I still have most of the cartons. $1.00?
    Total price: I earned $197.
    The spatula is still one of my favorite cooking tools today.

    I decided to make utensils like that as Christmas gifts a few years back. I probably used about $1,000 worth of tools and it took me maybe 3-4 hours, and my time is worth $50-100/hour.
    I remember marveling at the fact that I could buy more ergonomic wooden kitchen tools at Target for $5 a piece. There’s an economics lesson in there somewhere about specialization and gains from trade! Much better to import cheap spatulas from overseas and devote your time to producing what you specialize in!
