And just so you know, I'm not a natural mechanic. I've slowly taught myself how to change my own oil, replace parts like battery and muffler, even install the Rally Raid suspension. So if I can learn to do these things, so can you!

      @@MotoPhotoAdventures I watched that and was like hmmmmm. A buddy of mine and another dude suggested doing that. I might in the future, but I literally just putz around the back country roads in the rural farm area I live in. No interstate or prolonged high revs. I did however key in on you saying less vibration with it. Other than that for my mediocre riding I don't think I would utilize the 16t much. On another note your presentation skills and on screen abilities are superb. Keep it interesting, educational, and entertaining. Looking forward to viewing your stuff. 👍

    I have had 4 CB500s and 3 have had waterpump dribbles from the weep hole , but never a major leak . the last one replaced under warranty after 400mile from new and even that one leaked at 3000miles

    I've replaced the water pump on my 2015 CB500X 4 times in 32,000 miles...and I'm on my way to needing a 5th new pump. FWIW, I don't drain the oil, I use a syringe to suck about a pint or two of oil out of the filler hole -- this drops the oil level just below the water pump, so you can pull it off w/o oil leaking out.

      Well, if you're about to change the water pump for the 5th time then there's something you're doing wrong. 😅
      Have you tried to replace the original seal and o'ring for a better more resistant one? 😉

    Nicely done. But, how long will the new water pump last if it's the same as the old one?

      Hi Thomas! It's pretty much indefinite. The problem is in quality control. Occasionally these "affordable" adventure bikes get one installed that has a slightly crooked shaft or other defect. The problem rises to the surface right away. I bought my bike with only 2,000 miles on it from an owner who rarely rode it and always kept it in the garage. But it already had a little moisture around the weep hole. It's not a major issue, so I lived with it for the next 40,000 miles until it got bad enough that I needed to do something. I inspected the new one before putting it in and it looked perfect. The weep hole has been dry as a bone over the 6,000 miles I've ridden it since. Most CB500X owners never have a problem with it and the original water pump lasts the entire life of the bike. Unfortunately, mine was one of those with this known issue from the day I got it. But this simple and inexpensive fix has it back to good-as-new!!!

    Hi Chris, I did subscribe. I enjoyed your water pump replacement. I was going to asked how many miles you had on it when it needed that replacement but I kept reading the comments until someone else asked it. I've never owned any of my 64 bikes long enough to put that many miles on them so if mine lasts as long as yours, I'll never have to do that job. But there's guys that had them start leaking a lot earlier so I might not get so lucky. It does appear to be a recurring problem that I feel Honda really should address. There's a weakness in their design someplace. I wonder if the newer ones (2022+) are still going to have that problem? Hopefully Honda finally did something about it so maybe I won't see that problem, but I wouldn't count on it any more than Kawasaki fixing the "doohickey" problem on the KLR650.

      Thanks for the Sub, Spydie! You're absolutely right, it would be nice if Honda changed something. But honestly, I don't think this issue is nearly as prevalent as the doohickey. My bike is one of the original 2013 models. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to when/if this issue pops up. But I have a LOT of friends who own this bike (maybe we became friends because of that connection?), and none of them have had this problem. I think it's less common with newer models. So hopefully you'll be fine. Just ride and enjoy your machine! If for some reason you do develop a leak, now you know how easy it is to fix. 🙂

      @@MotoPhotoAdventures you may have seen on my channel the comparison I did last week between the CBX and the VX. The hose/piping on the VX is a lot cleaner/less cluttered than the Honda, but I don't know what the chore is to change the water pump. I don't think anyone ever had to do that on a VX. ha ha

    Mine did that from the 1st week that i got it.. model 2015. I kept taking it to the dealer for 3 months with half ass fixes, until finally they admitted it was unacceptable and changed it.

      Sorry to hear that. Glad they got it replaced. They were right to do so. Hondas are normally bullet proof. Too bad a few of them have this one little weak link. Fortunately I think it's been fixed on the 2018-present models!

    Aha! A bit of googling on an online catalogue and I've found that Honda have updated the part. Changed the 'MGZ' for 'MKP'. I don't know what is updated or if the new part will for older bikes though.

      @@MotoPhotoAdventures an update, comparing the fiches, the only parts difference are a pair of bolts, parts 8 & 9.Their sizes are the same but they've added a code S-NSHF to the description. I feel it's unlikely to be a magic fix but what do I know, total cost to change them is ~15 euros

    Three questions if you dont mind:
    1. tyre type ur running?
    2. should the new water pump not be covered under warranty?
    3. Is the new pump an upgraded version of current one?

      2. My bike is a 2013 model with over 40K miles on it. No warranty, I'm afraid.
      3. Nope. The old pump simply started leaking after several years. Many CB500X owners have reported the same issue. The new pump is the Honda original part. Only reason to replace is if yours develops a leak.

      Hi Ehsan! It was made by a company called Motea in Europe. I don't believe they sell it under that brand anymore. But it's very similar (if not identical) to the one you can find on eBay that's being made in China. I hope this helps!

    FWIW...... most liquid cooled bikes do weep a bit..... it is from the mechanical seal inside the pump. Unless it's leaking enough to puddle it really isn't necessary to change it.

      Removing the hoses to replace the water pump, they were clearly still in great shape. So no need to replace them yet.

    Should this be pretty close to 2021 cbr500r? Was thinking about replacing the gasket but everything I came across says just do the whole water pump. For me seems like its seeping out where the gasket is really really slow. Cleaning my chain tomorrow so I can get a really good look at it.

      It's the same exact engine on both bikes. So I would just replace everything like I did. You'll have to disassemble everything twice if you replace the gasket and it doesn't fix the leak.

    Just a thought, but would a new “O” ring have cured the leak without the need to change the pump? I don’t know much about this but it’s strange Honda sell just the “O” rings separately. Maybe a number of the reported water pump failures on the CB500X are in fact just simple “O” ring leaks.

      That is correct! No need to change anything. Just swap the 15T stock sprocket for a 15T and you're all set to go! It's an easy and inexpensive upgrade. It will change the accuracy of your speedometer. But I use a GPS on my bike anyway. So I use that to determine how fast I'm going, not my speedometer. If you want to calibrate your speedometer to match the new sprocket, I recommend the SpeedoDRD DRD-3 from 12 oClock Labs - amzn.to/2Pahs8C. It's a plug-and-play piece of electronics that you clip into place and adjust your speedometer accordingly.

    Hi mate i dont remember if i asked this on the sprocket video but did you have to grind down the chain guard , changing the water pump seems like a pretty simple task i have a 2015 only has 8300km on it so far bought it last year with 5400km hopefully i will have a while before i need to do this work .
    P.s we have an old saying in australia
    "Honda parts are bloody expensive"

      HAHA!!! Love the Aussi saying. By the way, we visited "Down Under" a couple years ago and absolutely loved it! We have good friends that live there, as well as in New Zealand. Anyway, to answer your question, yes I did grind down my chain guard because I thought I heard the chain hitting it after I installed the 16T sprocket. Although after shaving down a good bit of it, I realized I probably just had it installed upside down! Most likely, I didn't have to shave it at all!!! Oh well, at least I have extra clearance now just in case. :-)

      Hi Mate, I am in oz also and don’t find Honda parts any more expensive than any other brand. In fact my recent experiences with my 2019 500x lead me to believe that they are actually really competitive. I just purchased a replacement oem windscreen from Honda and it was only $75 AUD which is less than half the price of any decent aftermarket screen. I have had similar experiences with my 2015 CRV. As all our parts come from Thailand now perhaps the old saying doesn’t apply anymore?

    What can result from a bad water pump? Overheating or just inefficient running? Any major issues?

      Hi Joseph! Mine wasn't a bad issue. There was no damage to anything...just leaking coolant at the weep hole. It started out very minor...but got worse over time. I put thousands of miles on it even after I discovered the problem...the only issue being I had to top off my reserve tank with coolant more frequently. But I could tell it was only getting worse. Which is why I went ahead and replaced it. I hope this helps!

    I missed the chain guard spot. Mine fell out while taking the pump off. what held it on if it wasn’t the same bolts holding the pump on? Being it didn’t fall out until i removed the pump.

      Hi Jordan! The chain guard just sort of "hangs" in place. Then when you tighten the bolts it gets "squeezed" to hold it in position. You might want to watch our chain and sprockets video where you'll see more about the chain guard: th-cam.com/video/Je6LdgYt9fg/w-d-xo.html.

    my fried kris i have a problem with my cb500x 2020. i have done 3200 km and i noticed that the cooler tank is empty. i filled it and after a few rides the level lowerd again. the water pump did not hade a leak. what is the problem ? what can i do? thanks a lot

      Hi Helen! The first thing I would do is check the radiator. You'll see how to access it while watching this video. If the radiator fluid is low, it draws coolant from the overflow tank to compensate. I would make sure the radiator is full of coolant first, then fill the overflow tank to the top mark, then see what happens. If the overflow tank continues to drain at a rapid pace, have it checked by a professional. And for the record, I am NOT a professional!!! :-) I hope this helps!

    I don’t see how it would be possible for oil to mix (invade) with the coolant. That would be very bad in any internal combustion engine. So I don’t believe you would have to mess with the oil when changing the oil pump. Unless you have a head gasket problem and the oil and gas is mixed!

      After seeing it out, it doesn't look like oil would get into the cooling system, but you would lose it all over the garage floor. Probably could lay the bike on its side to avoid draining the oil.

    Hi, i changed my motor oil and i give it a 10W30. I live in Czech Republic and there is about 30-35 degrees celsius in summer (86-95 Fahrenheit) it is good choice or should i go with 10W40?

      I often use 10W-30 in winter and 10W-40 in summer. If it's very hot, 10W-40 has better high-temperature viscosity.

    Was it oil leaking from the water pump area and not coolant? I seem to have an oil drip coming from there but not losing coolant. I picked my bike up used with 1800 miles 2017 model recently. It isn't a bad leak but I want to address it at my next oil change. Hopefully this will fix it. I have read that this is a common issue with these bikes

      WOW!!! That's awesome, @@crispernator! My bike has been super reliable, other than the leaky water pump. Even that was no bid deal...just a few hours and a little over $100 to pull out the old and put in the new. Hopefully the new one will last me the rest of the life of the bike, which I fully intend to ride to 100000 km. :-)

    Aha! Now that you have removed the water pump, I see where the oil would be. But it seems like you would only drop the oil level a little bit
    So you wouldn’t spill any oil on the floor.

      Hi Doug! That is correct. You don't have to completely drain it if you don't want to. Some people just siphon some oil out of the tip filler cap to be safe. But it was about time for me to change mine anyway, so I went ahead and dropped all of it.

      Hi Karl! That's a negative. The occasional drip is one thing. Constant leaking from the weep hole is an indicator that something is not healthy with the engine. It was bad enough that I started parking the bike on cardboard because there would almost always be a drip or two underneath it after ever ride. The engine wasn't overheating. And I probably could have just kept running the old pump as long as I continued to check the overflow tank and topping off the fluid levels. But with several long-distance trips coming up, I felt better just fixing the problem. It hasn't leaked a single drop since I replaced the pump back in February. :-)

      Both are...for different reasons. If you live in mild or colder climate, 30 is better because it's not as thick. If you live in very hot climate like I do, 40 is better to keep engine cooler in the extreme heat. I sometimes use 30 in the winter months. But I always switch back to 40 in the spring/summer.

    I got the 2019 version. I’ve noticed that little drip around 5 000km after I bought it. Almost 12 000 km and Still got that drip, but my coolant level remains between min and max lines.
    Your video just made me realize that my bike might have a water pump sealing problem. I’m gonna try to replace that pump using warranty ...

    Doesn't Honda recommend 10w30 oil in the manual? I see you changing it with 10w40. Care to share your thoughts about this? I have an open discussion since years with my local mechanic about this... can't win apparently!

      Hi Mario! I can't remember what is listed in my manual. But during the summer, it gets really hot and humid here. So during the summer months, my local dealership recommends 10w40 to keep the engine a little cooler. During the winter I switch back to 10w30.

I would go with the manufacturer's recommendation unless, like me, you live in an exteme environment where one offers a benefit over the other.

    MAJOR 2022 UPDATE NEWS!
    If Honda updated the 2021 CB500X, they really updated & actually made better the 2022 CB500 line. Today (Sept. 1st) Honda unveiled *_major_* improvements to it.
    A happy minor improvement to the 2022 CB500X is _much better color scheme compared to the 2021 (IMO).
    Did they fix the water pump for 2022? I wonder.

      Hi Sypdie! I had them checked several years ago. They were still within spec. So I haven't bothered since. I did buy new spark plugs, thinking I would tackle that some day. But it's such a major project, and the bike is still purring like a kitten, so I haven't bothered yet. :-)

A friend had his shim/bucket valves checked on his Kawasaki Concours at 15,000 miles and they were still in spec, but the labor cost $1200. I'm thinking they are something to not be concerned about and like you said, it is one heck of a big job to do, and very costly if you have to hire it done. And it's hard to tell if they really need it (the bike will still purr like a kitten) until you burn an exhaust valve! LOL. All my bikes until the Versys X and this one have had the old mechanical valve adjustment and I always adjusted my own. But I seldom keep a bike long enough to get enough miles to have to adjust a shim/bucket system.

    Mine started to loose coolant through the weep hole in the pump, it was wet from new. Finally got the dealer to replace it under warranty, replaced at 2000 miles. Took it in twice before they fitted the new one. Poor engineering!!

      @@johnbaker7626 the Himalayan is a nice bike. But I think the CB500X is a better bike in almost every way. The water pump truly is not a rampant problem. You got it replaced early. So you should be good to go! Mine happened at over 65,000 miles!       I don't believe it is. Many changes were made to the CB500X after 2018. I don't hear of many newer bikes having this problem. And even if they do, this bike is so reliable that when I say "weak link", it's STILL a more reliable engine than most other adventure bikes out there! Honda has a reputation for excellent durability and longevity in their motorcycles. I certainly would never choose not to buy a CB500X because of the Water Pump issue.

      @@pakssmsjsjsks8596 I'm not familiar with the new 2022/2023 model. But even if they move manufacturing to Thailand, I don't think that will affect the quality of this motorcycle. It is known for being a quality bike at an affordable price!

    My shit dumped all its coolant and the water pump was leaking consistently so hopefully a new pump will work?

      Oh no! That sucks man. Hopefully replacing the pump takes care of it. It's pretty easy if you just follow the steps in the video.

    Gotta love Honda. But ya know, if it wuz a Harley, you coulda fix'd it wit a hammer and a big ol' wood handle screwdriver... but it would prolly pee out all your coolant on the next poker run...
    and if it was a BMW, it'd be a BMW tech only repair needing special BMW dealer tools, a BMW Master Technician, and the proprietary BMW service computer... and the bill would have been $1198 plus tax. "Our shop has an opening for you on the 17th of October." :)

    I'm 66 years old. Considering riding again. I liked this motorcycle. But can tell you this is a deal breaker. Honda should have thought this one thru better. This video should never have been needed to make. Instead of a how to...just don't buy this motorcycle

      Hi Ken! I hope you'll reconsider. The CB500X is an AMAZING motorcycle! It's actually extremely reliable, comfortable, fuel efficient, and inexpensive to own. I absolutely LOVED all the crazy places this bike took me to. Ergo, there are always going to be strengths and weaknesses. But I can tell you out of all my friends that own everything from Harleys to Triumphs, Susuki's to Yamahas, and even my newly aquired Aprilia...the CB500X had fewer issues and more worry-free miles than any of them. It's not like this water pump will go bad on a large percentage of these bikes. It just happens to be one of the few components that "might". So don't talk yourself out of buying a CB500X just because of that. You could be missing out on 60K miles of smiles and adventures if you do!!! 🙂

    Hi, every how many km make oil change? In manual right every 12000 km but my dealer told me to change my engine oil every 5000 km.

      Hi! It depends partly on what kind of oil you use. But if you use the recommended factory oil (or something similar), I would follow Honda's recommendation in the book. I change mine every 5,000 miles (8047 km) because it's easy for me to remember that number. 🙂 When I see 52,000...52,500...53,000...etc. on the odometer, I change it.

      @@user-bc1tm9ko8p yes, I would definitely go with what's recommended in the manual...unless of course you are using your CB500X in a race or for other extra-heavy-duty uses! I have over 58,000 miles now (over 93,000 km). It still runs great!
