Did the Loop in 17/18. NEVER got up at 5:30 AM (except to pee)! Did NOT have a schedule other than that loose constraint imposed by the seasons. Saw you on the T/S during my 2019 return to the T/S as it was one of the best parts of the Loop. Loop NOW while you can. Do not live with the regret of not doing it. Hi Tim. Yes, I remember passing you at the top of Lock 3(??), but thought that was in 2019?? I might be mistaken, but all good. As for us doing The Loop, I think that for now we'll stick with the current working plan. Lots to see each summer, without having to commit to a full year. Gotta keep in mind that, despite the fact that most folks only see me on the water, I still work full time and have a ways to go before retirement, so we're down to seasonal cruising only at this point. One other option for us might be to head south along the Intracoastal to the Sunshine State for a month or two, but that's still just an idea germinating in my head ;-) All the best for the New Year and happy boating!!
@@alias19 It was easy to maintain supplies. It is really a sequence of day trips. Of course, there are some instances of "no where to tie up" but those are infrequent. We only anchored 14 nights, spending the rest of the nights in marina's, where we could meet the locals and experience the local flavor.

I just discovered your channel and I'm so glad I did. You have hit on some of the unsaid truth about the Loop. It is almost a Catch-22 scenario. You need to have a schedule based on seasons, locks, etc, yet Mother Nature doesn't know what a schedule is. For example, I should be in Florida right now, yet because of work related issues, my boat and I are in Ohio for the winter. I'll resume my loop this summer and if things work out, I'll be in Florida this time next year. The thing I've learned so far is that flexibility is key to starting and finishing the Great Loop. If you don't have flexibility, you'll never make it. I think that Sam and Rev would agree with me on this. I love your channel and perhaps I'll see you guys next summer.
Yes, boats and boating is all about compromise, but that's okay. Although nothing close to The Loop, our own journeys seem to always have us adjusting or outright changing our course. Be it mechanical, weather, or a simple change of direction, our plans always change. But again, that's okay. If you get some time, check out my Epic Boat Cruise 2019, 2020 and our most recent 2021 getaway and you'll see why I'm no longer gonna make firm plans for our 3-5 week getaways. From here on, we'll simply point the boat 'that way' with not much more than a hopeful destination or turnaround spot and see what happens. Wherever we get to, I know it'll be better than even imagined 😊
We did the same thing Paul. We had planned to do the Loop then after many years on a 45 foot Bayliner decided it was just too much work. Lol. We want to spend the summer on the boat and then spend the winter in a camper down south, even Mexico.
As I mentioned in the video, we're not very good at getting up at the crack of dawn and spending most days traveling. Summer and our boat is for enjoying time on the water - and taking our time is part of that enjoyment equation. As for my WiNtEr time, it's mostly spent producing boating videos 😉

That's a loaded question ;-) I'm going to be including a video to discuss this coming up, as part of my 'Buying A Boat - What You Should Know' series. I'm often asked this very question, so hoping I can offer some helpful insights.
Rather than the great loop you could consider what I think is called the golden triangle loop. Going from Kingston to Ottawa to Montreal, down the St Lawrence to the Richelieu River down to Lake Champlain, down to the Erie Canal. West on the Erie to the Oswego River, north to Oswego and across the lake to Kingston. I am not sure if Golden Loop is the correct name but I am planning it. It is about 1400 km.
Not sure if you are asking if we have the ability to do that, or the desire to? Yes on both accounts, but that area is not currently on our radar for the coming season, as I'm leaning more towards a southbound voyage this summer :- )

I was requesting if you would go thru the little current then on up the Spanish River past the Spanish Marina & passt the next couple of marina resorts by the way the town of Spanish has real grocery stores, gas stations, hardware, ice cream, pizza shop that delivers, all wa.king distance from the river. Then go back & cruise the beautiful North Channel & further The Wales Back Channel. That whole area was like heaven on earth to us we loved it so & we miss it & the friendly people & First Nations People so very much. If you could include in your next seasons etc., trip we would be so very grateful. I thank you!!

Let us know when you were coming down the Erie Canal to go to New York City! We’ve done the trip from Syracuse to New York City twice and it’s an amazing trip. Best boating trip I’ve ever been on! Our Marina is on Oneida lake and we have plenty of beer! PS that 370 SeaRay is still for sale at 43 north marina in Brewerton. I know you had difficulty trying to check that one out.
Big thumbs up for admitting you are a lazy boater! The trip IS the destination, why blitz it? What's that cliche....make sure you stop and smell the roses along the way? My wife will tell you in no uncertain terms that she smells the roses much better when she stays up late and sleeps in. Then again, that might have more to do with Rose' wine than roses proper. We bought a nice 4207 Carver May 2021, we too looked at doing the big loop, but for virtually the same reasons as you we thought that was not really in our wheel house (pun intended). Like you, we will take manageable bites of the small loops! FYI, just started following you and yacht girl recently! We've been Watching Sam and Rev for almost a year now, now it's your turn. Can you feel the pressure!!

P.S. - Strongly consider joining the AGLCA. In the larger picture, it is not that expensive. Take a vacation and go to one of the conferences. Nothing against Sam and Rev (I watch all their postings) but you will get the viewpoint from a variety of other experienced loopers. If nothing else, I guarantee a conference would be a great boating-related vacation. Nellie May.
I've been following the AGLCA for in around 15 years, including listening to many of their podcasts online. Have also talked directly to many Loopers that we've met in person to get their perspective. Someone actually sponsored me a membership a number of years ago.
If you don't have the time to do the great loop. Then another choice would be to do something like your neighbors Searching for C-Shels. Take a trip down the intra coastal waterway, you don't even have to go all the way to Florida you can go to Georgia there's plenty to see along the way.
Yes, that is another idea I've considered. Believe I mentioned that in another comment. . . Apart from that, you have the best channel name on TH-cam, yet '0' videos of your craft. when are we gonna see something of that ship of yours?
I've got to tell you, I think I'm fine with you not doing loop videos, I love the videos you're doing now. Frankly, I follow like 10 looper channels now and feel like I've already done the loop. My wife wants to get a boat (I've had a couple smaller bow riders over the years) in a couple years so we're starting our hunt for our live aboard. She retires in 5 more years (I already am) and she wants to head out on the loop. So as soon as my current batch of channels all complete their loops I'll take a break from them and hone in on your videos. Like I say, I'm loving your videos and I think I'll really like your "mini loop" videos. You go to some really cool areas. 😎
One most people forget about went talking local loops. Erie Canal in to Lake Champlain to Montreal and back in to the 1000islands. Boating next to 2000feet mountain peaks how cool would that be.
We share similar opinions regarding the loop. After watching Sam and Rev for a couple years, I've come to the conclusion it's just too much of a marathon. Although I enjoy boating and traveling on the boat, living there for a year or more is a bit much. Beyond that, all the loopers I've spoken with that come through the Straits comment on the beauty of the Great Lakes. We're lucky to live in the middle of what many consider to be the best part of the loop, so why leave? As you say, there are years' worth of cruising destinations here. I've thought that circumnavigating each Great Lake would be an interesting endeavor. Add the Rideau, Trent/Severn and the Erie Canal and there's plenty to hold a cruiser's interest. I guess the only negative is the seasonal aspect but that's when I get the home chores done.
We are the first Canadian Loopers for 2021 cruising permit 001 lol. We are halfway through the loop and the answer to your question is that you don't always have to get up at 5am in the morning to start the day. We do sleep in from time to time
I know there are lots of things to consider about doing the Great Loop, first you need a boat! (j/k). Seriously though I've watched Sam and Rev they seem like great people but I think he's former Military and regimented which is definitely not a Bad thing. I greatly appreciate his service. I think you can do the Loop any way you want considering weather conditions and fuel considerations. From what I understand watching a lot of videos there aren't a lot of fuel stops on the Mississippi. So it's suggested diesels that can travel long distances go that way. I think there are more stops on the TenTom. I know a couple that started in Florida and they haven't made it to New York after two years, but that's their way. Take care!
I plan to do the great loop over about 5 years and only during the boating seasons. I will be starting in Pittsburgh in year 1 and then going to St. Louis to Chicago to Detroit to Erie, where I will haul the boat out of the water. I plan to spend about a week at each stop and have absolutely no plans to wake up at 530am and rush the trip like a crazy person. Really what I am doing is just moving my boating season every year to the small portion of the loop that I want to cover (instead of having my boating season be where I am located now, year after year).
Sounds like a commendable plan - and much more sensible 😉 But it also looks like you'll end up going against the current. Not that it'll be a problem, but I know that most Loopers try to do the route in a counterclockwise manner to take advantage of the currents and hopefully Dave some money by doing so. That said, if you've followed any number of my videos, you'll have realized that saving nickels and dimes on fuel isn't a priority for me ⛽
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo, plan is to build a retirement home in Florida, so I am not entirely sure I will close the loop. From Chicago to Erie, I understand that I will be with the current. Year 2 will be Erie, PA to Montreal (haul out in Canada). Year 3 will be Montreal to Thousand Islands and back past Montreal to Boston (haul out in Massachusetts). Year 4 is Boston to Annapolis (haul out in Chesapeake). Year 5 will be Annapolis to Ft. Lauderdale (likely starting in November after hurricane season). Then, I decide whether to stay in Florida during the winters or close the loop. BTW, I am refitting a 1986 Sea Ray 460 Express Cruiser, which will be perfect. One of the main reasons we are doing this is because I plan to buy an expensive catamaran for retirement, and before I plunk $1M into a boat, I want to be sure the lifestyle of living on a boat full time works for me! I love the Sea Ray 460 EC - you should take a look!
Sam will be happy you mentioned their channel, he mentions Boating with Boogaboo several times. You are totally correct, from what I have seen Sam and Rev show the realities of the trip, bad weather, breakdowns and cost associated with the breakdowns.
Sam's chanel is great we have met them ,but everybody is differnt we cruise 12 months a year and try not to plan much the ICW you will have maybe 4 days that the tide is dependent and a few in the Hudson but the trip so far is great
As I mentioned, we've been at this for well over 20 years and are no strangers to the breakdowns, weather issues and general change of plans. Our problem is the incessant early mornings 😂

I’m with ya Paul. Getting up every morning at 5:30 with the Marines to pull anchor and get moving isn’t my idea of relaxed cruising either! We’re thinking similar to you guys - maybe a series of mini-loops in different parts. We sold our Tiara 3100 Open LE recently. Like you said, the 330 Sea Ray could do it, same as the Tiara 3100, but not as comfortably, and both burning gas. We have some ideas of the type of boat we might like, including a Tolly 44, as it can cruise at 8kt somewhat efficiently but can get up on plane and make time if so desired. Defever 44 also on the list, but that’s a slow motion proposition no matter what. Question I have for you: what is the longest you and Anchor Girl have “lived” on the boat at one stretch, and what size boat, and maybe type, do you think is the minimum you could get away with for extended stays of a month or more at a time? We lived full time, April - October for two years aboard Boogaboo IV, our 400 Sedan Bridge. That said, we've come back to the express style Sundancer and would happily do a full season or more on one anywhere from 37'- 40' in length. That would give us all we need to be comfortable for extended cruising.
530 is usually out of the rack time! But not always! Moving at first light is good for a number of reasons. Plus shut down by 3pm and ready hot DOCKTAILS. Looper Midnight = 9PM! LOL 😆
@@WhatYachtToDo The Captain likes to get moving really early when we're out and about on the boat but he always lets me sleep. I make sure everything is set up for him just the way he wants it the night before. Thankfully this works well for us. Maybe sometime we can meet up for the 3pm docktails! :)
Yes, I was reading about that awhile back. Unfortunately, that great price of history is now in the hands of private enterprise, which is profit motivated, regardless of its significance in not US and North America's history. There was actually talk of filling in some areas, forever severing it's ties with the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. Let's hope it never goes that way, but not unlike the situation we had here with the Trent Severn Waterway, a few years back. Happily, the Canadian government came to their senses and have fully jumped on board with a complete rejuvenation of the entire 240 mile run.
I live on the Erie canal in Syracuse. We’ve not heard or read anything about a closure. If anything they are doing more to make it more accessible to boaters. Plus it has been free the last number of years!

Interesting, but I think it's gonna be just like we've seen over the past two years, with an even greater number of folks wanting to do anything to get out of their houses. Boats, RV's, camping all drawing more people in every day. Here in Canada, Parks Canada (national parks service) have seen a sizeable increase in reservations and are already cautioning people to book early. . .

If we continue on this track..with people that refuse to be vaccinated, and more and more of them and others flying, cruise ships, camping, etc. all over the world because their tired of it all. I say that because most of our American friends refer to the portion of the Great Loop that passes through our Trent Severn Waterway and gorgeous Georgian Bay simply as 'Canada' 😉 This huge country extends many thousands of miles beyond the local waters of Southern Ontario, but it's a shame there's no canal teaching that far 😁

Big thumbs up for admitting you are a lazy boater! The trip IS the destination, why blitz it? What's that cliche....make sure you stop and smell the roses along the way? My wife will tell you in no uncertain terms that she smells the roses much better when she stays up late and sleeps in. Then again, that might have more to do with Rose' wine than roses proper. We bought a nice 4207 Carver May 2021, we too looked at doing the big loop, but for virtually the same reasons as you we thought that was not really in our wheel house (pun intended). Like you, we will take manageable bites of the small loops! FYI, just started following you and yacht girl recently! We've been Watching Sam and Rev for almost a year now, now it's your turn. Can you feel the pressure!!
Ya, that sounds like our routine as well. Late evenings to celebrate the day and relaxing mornings to take in the fruits of my labours.

P.S. - Strongly consider joining the AGLCA. In the larger picture, it is not that expensive. Take a vacation and go to one of the conferences. Nothing against Sam and Rev (I watch all their postings) but you will get the viewpoint from a variety of other experienced loopers. If nothing else, I guarantee a conference would be a great boating-related vacation. Nellie May.
I've been following the AGLCA for in around 15 years, including listening to many of their podcasts online. Have also talked directly to many Loopers that we've met in person to get their perspective. Someone actually sponsored me a membership a number of years ago.

If you don't have the time to do the great loop. Then another choice would be to do something like your neighbors Searching for C-Shels. Take a trip down the intra coastal waterway, you don't even have to go all the way to Florida you can go to Georgia there's plenty to see along the way.

I've got to tell you, I think I'm fine with you not doing loop videos, I love the videos you're doing now. Frankly, I follow like 10 looper channels now and feel like I've already done the loop. My wife wants to get a boat (I've had a couple smaller bow riders over the years) in a couple years so we're starting our hunt for our live aboard. She retires in 5 more years (I already am) and she wants to head out on the loop. So as soon as my current batch of channels all complete their loops I'll take a break from them and hone in on your videos. Like I say, I'm loving your videos and I think I'll really like your "mini loop" videos. You go to some really cool areas. 😎

Hello, does the loop include salt water as well then? Is that a concern for boats at all?
Probably 50 % is saltwater. Not a big concern if you keep it cleaned.

One most people forget about went talking local loops. Erie Canal in to Lake Champlain to Montreal and back in to the 1000islands. Boating next to 2000feet mountain peaks how cool would that be.
Lake Champlain would be a great addition to the New York visit. Lots of wonderful places to see in this area of the world. Love it!!
We share similar opinions regarding the loop. After watching Sam and Rev for a couple years, I've come to the conclusion it's just too much of a marathon. Although I enjoy boating and traveling on the boat, living there for a year or more is a bit much. Beyond that, all the loopers I've spoken with that come through the Straits comment on the beauty of the Great Lakes. We're lucky to live in the middle of what many consider to be the best part of the loop, so why leave? As you say, there are years' worth of cruising destinations here. I've thought that circumnavigating each Great Lake would be an interesting endeavor. Add the Rideau, Trent/Severn and the Erie Canal and there's plenty to hold a cruiser's interest. I guess the only negative is the seasonal aspect but that's when I get the home chores done.
Love the Great Lakes! We will do more of them along with the North Channel and much more of Canada!
We'd be happy aboard the boat for a full year, but in a more relaxed way.
We are the first Canadian Loopers for 2021 cruising permit 001 lol. We are halfway through the loop and the answer to your question is that you don't always have to get up at 5am in the morning to start the day. We do sleep in from time to time

I know there are lots of things to consider about doing the Great Loop, first you need a boat! (j/k). Seriously though I've watched Sam and Rev they seem like great people but I think he's former Military and regimented which is definitely not a Bad thing. I greatly appreciate his service. I think you can do the Loop any way you want considering weather conditions and fuel considerations. From what I understand watching a lot of videos there aren't a lot of fuel stops on the Mississippi. So it's suggested diesels that can travel long distances go that way. I think there are more stops on the TenTom. I know a couple that started in Florida and they haven't made it to New York after two years, but that's their way. Take care!

I plan to do the great loop over about 5 years and only during the boating seasons. I will be starting in Pittsburgh in year 1 and then going to St. Louis to Chicago to Detroit to Erie, where I will haul the boat out of the water. I plan to spend about a week at each stop and have absolutely no plans to wake up at 530am and rush the trip like a crazy person. Really what I am doing is just moving my boating season every year to the small portion of the loop that I want to cover (instead of having my boating season be where I am located now, year after year).
Sounds like a commendable plan - and much more sensible 😉 But it also looks like you'll end up going against the current. Not that it'll be a problem, but I know that most Loopers try to do the route in a counterclockwise manner to take advantage of the currents and hopefully Dave some money by doing so.
That said, if you've followed any number of my videos, you'll have realized that saving nickels and dimes on fuel isn't a priority for me ⛽
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo, plan is to build a retirement home in Florida, so I am not entirely sure I will close the loop. From Chicago to Erie, I understand that I will be with the current. Year 2 will be Erie, PA to Montreal (haul out in Canada). Year 3 will be Montreal to Thousand Islands and back past Montreal to Boston (haul out in Massachusetts). Year 4 is Boston to Annapolis (haul out in Chesapeake). Year 5 will be Annapolis to Ft. Lauderdale (likely starting in November after hurricane season). Then, I decide whether to stay in Florida during the winters or close the loop. BTW, I am refitting a 1986 Sea Ray 460 Express Cruiser, which will be perfect. One of the main reasons we are doing this is because I plan to buy an expensive catamaran for retirement, and before I plunk $1M into a boat, I want to be sure the lifestyle of living on a boat full time works for me! I love the Sea Ray 460 EC - you should take a look!
Sam will be happy you mentioned their channel, he mentions Boating with Boogaboo several times. You are totally correct, from what I have seen Sam and Rev show the realities of the trip, bad weather, breakdowns and cost associated with the breakdowns.
Sam's chanel is great we have met them ,but everybody is differnt we cruise 12 months a year and try not to plan much the ICW you will have maybe 4 days that the tide is dependent and a few in the Hudson but the trip so far is great
As I mentioned, we've been at this for well over 20 years and are no strangers to the breakdowns, weather issues and general change of plans. Our problem is the incessant early mornings 😂

For us, having our Little Tiny has been simply wonderful! HE is so content to be on the boat and quickly got used to the noises and learned our rhythm when we travel through the locks. I’m with ya Paul. Getting up every morning at 5:30 with the Marines to pull anchor and get moving isn’t my idea of relaxed cruising either! We’re thinking similar to you guys - maybe a series of mini-loops in different parts. We sold our Tiara 3100 Open LE recently. Like you said, the 330 Sea Ray could do it, same as the Tiara 3100, but not as comfortably, and both burning gas. We have some ideas of the type of boat we might like, including a Tolly 44, as it can cruise at 8kt somewhat efficiently but can get up on plane and make time if so desired. Defever 44 also on the list, but that’s a slow motion proposition no matter what. Question I have for you: what is the longest you and Anchor Girl have “lived” on the boat at one stretch, and what size boat, and maybe type, do you think is the minimum you could get away with for extended stays of a month or more at a time? We lived full time, April - October for two years aboard Boogaboo IV, our 400 Sedan Bridge. That said, we've come back to the express style Sundancer and would happily do a full season or more on one anywhere from 37'- 40' in length. That would give us all we need to be comfortable for extended cruising.

530 is usually out of the rack time! But not always! Moving at first light is good for a number of reasons. Plus shut down by 3pm and ready hot DOCKTAILS. Looper Midnight = 9PM! LOL 😆
@@WhatYachtToDo The Captain likes to get moving really early when we're out and about on the boat but he always lets me sleep. I make sure everything is set up for him just the way he wants it the night before. Thankfully this works well for us. Maybe sometime we can meet up for the 3pm docktails! :)

Yes, I was reading about that awhile back. Unfortunately, that great price of history is now in the hands of private enterprise, which is profit motivated, regardless of its significance in not US and North America's history. There was actually talk of filling in some areas, forever severing it's ties with the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. Let's hope it never goes that way, but not unlike the situation we had here with the Trent Severn Waterway, a few years back. Happily, the Canadian government came to their senses and have fully jumped on board with a complete rejuvenation of the entire 240 mile run.
I live on the Erie canal in Syracuse. We’ve not heard or read anything about a closure. If anything they are doing more to make it more accessible to boaters. Plus it has been free the last number of years!

That up the road, people are going to get sick of paying for boats they never use and there should be plenty on the market. Plus, at a reasonable cost. Interesting, but I think it's gonna be just like we've seen over the past two years, with an even greater number of folks wanting to do anything to get out of their houses. Boats, RV's, camping all drawing more people in every day. Here in Canada, Parks Canada (national parks service) have seen a sizeable increase in reservations and are already cautioning people to book early. . .

If we continue on this track..with people that refuse to be vaccinated, and more and more of them and others flying, cruise ships, camping, etc. all over the world because their tired of it all. Nice. I'm guessing your home waters are within the Lower 48? I say that because most of our American friends refer to the portion of the Great Loop that passes through our Trent Severn Waterway and gorgeous Georgian Bay simply as 'Canada' 😉 This huge country extends many thousands of miles beyond the local waters of Southern Ontario, but it's a shame there's no canal teaching that far 😁
