    When it’s cold just lean it to one side until gas comes out the overflow, that will prime it, then will fire right up cold. Had a 95’ cr500 for years and that’s a great trick. Awesome bike!

    Best way to start a bike like that is to tip it on its side till gas comes out of the overflow lines, get it to TDC and give her a kick that would put a hole in a wooden deck.

    • @airforcecode8416
      @airforcecode8416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How do you know when the bike is at Top Dead Center without being able to see the piston? This isn't a rude comment I'm actually curious. Couldn't find anything on the internet lol.

    • @jeremyf9074
      @jeremyf9074 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Air Force Code If you turn the engine over until you get to the point where the compression is the highest, that is where tdc is.

    • @airforcecode8416
      @airforcecode8416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I always turn over the engine to "gain compression" before I start my bike anyways but I didn't know that was getting it to top dead center. Thank you.

    • @airforcecode8416
      @airforcecode8416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One more thing, what's the point of tipping it over until gas comes out the overflow? Just making sure the carb has fuel??

  • @heavysnow8616
    @heavysnow8616 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Forgot to mention, on the 250 that score mark looks like it could have been caused by the piston anti-rotation pin. Look at the ring groove (s) on your piston, there should be a small “pin” there. The ring is installed so the pin is between each ring end. If that pin comes out it will do similar damage to what you have. If that pin is missing you need to find it. This may include opening up the bottom end. Don’t rush and not check as you will do the same type damage to all new parts.

    Iv got a 83 model RD CR 480. Owned it for over 30 years now. It is an absolute beast. Left hand kickstart is a legbuster if ya don't know how to do it. A few mates of mine have been bitten hard by it and given up. I find it easier than right handed kickstarts for some reason and I prefer them. Iv also got a KXf 450 and the old CR would eat it for breakfast. The motor also runs very smooth and doesn't vibrate like a lot of big bore bikes do. It has that much grunt that you can do powerstarts in top gear. Originally the 83 model came out with a five speed cluster but Iv swapped it over to a 4 speed cluster. You don't need a five speed box in something that makes so much horsepower. It's got a different pipe, Wiseco piston, Boysen reed valves, ports altered, and a 44 mil Bing carby. The power delivery is smooth as and it just makes power from right down low in the rev range. Since 1983, they've improved the handling of bikes, but they sure as hell haven't improved their motors. Not even the injected motors. Water cooling is prob the biggest improvement. Jus my opinion.

    You also have to find TDC in order to start these beasts, slowly kick it over a few times and then let the kick start go all the way back up. Then slowly move the kick start down to where you start to feel resistance and kick it hard.

I bought from a friend who raced it out here in Imperial valley dist 38 races, it had ported cyl, pipe, wp shock. It was brutally fast. had a terraflex rear tire, and 44 rear sprocket, 15 front and could wheelie 5th gear all day. and would give me ridiculous arm pump. but you get use to it,

    Don't see why people are hating on these guys, they're kids, of course they might not know some things but that's how you learn. Just showing interest is enough to show that they like the technology and are learning as they go. Saying they can't ride and should quit biking is just a bitter and jealous solution.

    I had a 96 cr500 and my brother has a 94 cr500 now. Best way to start a cold 500 is turn fuel on, lean bike to side until a little gas pours out the over flow, put it in 2nd gear, push bike forward and rear moving the piston(this primes the cylinder with fuel), Put back in neutral and kick as hard as you can. It will start on the first kick ice cold.

    i had a piston that had those same marks when i was doing mytop end, what caused it was that the little L shape part of the sparkplug where it sparks broke off at that little weld where its held to the spark plug body, thats why its good to use a good brand plug.

    I have an rg125 gamma , 98 or near abouts !. Haven't checked the year for a while, it's the model with USD forms for an even more aggresive stance .. it'ss a pocket rocket, I can carry way more corner speed than most , riding it's a dream. It's expensive for a everyday bike, fixing tis and fixing that. When I upgraded bikes I kept it not needing the money invested in her , years later I'm glad I kept her, when she's primed to go shes a ton plus bike. all black and sports looking, shame the rest sets are welded onand cannot be unbolted, passengers on a 125 don't mix to great!. She sounds lovely when the power band kicks in!. Ihave a 750 bandit I upgraded from a 600, yzf750 forks wheel and six pots. By raided lines all around and a highly strung 750 text motor that loves to wheelie !. Power house, my pride is the movistar telefonica CBR 600 rr that's also a pocket rocket one you can eat and still ride fairly sensible.. keep up the great work bud, enjoyed watching and listening too!. Two strokes sound racey , they also love the early morning condensed air, more bang for your buck ! Gotta watch ice tho! Enjoy and cherish them , love them all but don't set a dinner spot for them that's creapy!. Peace James .

    On the CR250r,.. I had similar problem with mine, it was the WRYST-PIN clips.. ; had worked it's way over enough to scar the wall on the head.. I had it bored .10 and it fixed issue. You also might wanna check the crank bearings & replace at slightest sign of wear.. CONGRATS ON THE CR500!!! NICE KNOWIN' YA BUD!,.. LOL !! 500 IS A BEAST! BE CAREFUL,not a 250 u playin with now bit of power difference, i miss my CR's i had 2 of each size(250,& 500) bak when i rode a lot. i've seen quite a few broken bones from experienced riders too. the ol'85 Honda red 250 seemed to be less forgiving powerband, well 500 were even worse, but fun as hell to ride if u could stay on. Now though the power is more leveled out for rider control, still fun to ride. Be SAFE

    that's pinking, it's early detonation of fuel in the cylinder. Pitting only gets worse the more pot holes appear on the piston and head, the high points great hot spots causing more predetination. You're most likely using a spark plug that's too hot.
    Also, to start one of these, slowly cycle the kick like 6 times, find TDC, then kick from TDC as hard as you can, move leg off kick instantaneously or it will break your ankle one day.

    The compression seems pretty low if you can start it from a seated position. The bars vibrate on a 500, that's normal. Wait till you find out you can take off in 3rd and pull out.

    The main bearing cage has came apart that's what beat you're pissing up in your Dome up. The rod bearing is shot that's why you have two side to side play more than likely you have play up and down to.

    It has compression but not good compression at all for a 500 that noise when you kick it over is air leaking through the side the piston, great vids man keep up The work and nice bike btw

    Usually the lower rod bearing exploding is what causes the shrapnel being sucked through the ports and smashing the piston and the head. And unfortunately it got your cylinder too

    Get that kick starter exactly top dead center. With choke on, stand up and put all your might down on that starter. As you are kicking down, GENTLY crack the throttle. She will start every single time on first kick.

  • @jasonkrug6277
    @jasonkrug6277 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is old, but this is how yous start a 500, boys. You do what you call the "priming kick" to get PASSED the compression stroke. Then, the next one, you give it a proper kick. You don't use your leg, you use your whole body. Balance the bike, and hop up in the air and come down on it. If you run the machine regular, and its jetted right, it should start one kick. If it sits a while, you may need to rinse and repeat.

    Please forgive me if it has already been said. I looked through a few posts and didn't see it. First off, CR500s never had a power valve. Second, compression might be a little low ... If that bike was cold and that was the first time he has tried kicking it over he's either a BEAST or the bike was warmed or both. I have 2 CRs 86 and 01 and 2 KXs 86 and 01, Warmed up and used to starting them yes, otherwise nope. That is a NICE bike! You guys do a lot of cool stuff. Take you're time and work with that bike, something is up, more than likely something really minor. It's hard for me to really tell from the vid but compression could be it, even on a low compression they can seem and feel ridged. Just food for thought judging without being there. Anyways have fun and for GOD SAKE "GEAR your Butts up"

    If you put it in gear, with the choke on and rock it back and forth 8-10 times, then it will start first kick every time. That’s how I start my 92 and it works flawlessly. I learned that trick from an ol’ die hard Honda rider.

    Sometimes the little tab that holds the ring in position on the piston can come out and that’s what could have happened
