  • In this next part in our Yield Pyramid series, Pioneer Field Agronomist Troy Deutmeyer covers the final foundational blocks of the yield pyramid: Potassium and Phosphorus. Potassium has been referred as the mother of all nutrients, because it can influence the efficiency of many other nutrients in our crop production system such as water use efficiency, drought tolerance, stalk quality, standability, and disease tolerance. Pioneer recommends having a potassium levels of 200-250+ ppm in your soil, which will help mitigate year-to-year yield variability. Phosphorous also plays a big part in your soil quality, and many plant processes like cell respiration, energy transfer, and cell division. Troy also reviews several studies showing the optimum levels of Potassium and Phosphorus to mitigate yield variability and maintain optimal crop health. He also recommends several apps to help you see how much potassium and phosphorus to add to your fields each year to maintain optimum levels.
