  • Fan Ho was one of the brilliant photographers to come out of China in the 1950's and 1960's. His most known body of work was done in Hong Kong documenting its mid-century growth. Later Fan Ho worked as an acclaimed and award-wining film director.
He passed away from pnemonia on June 19, 2016 at the age of 84.

“Our mortality is defined by two things : The way we treat other people, and the work we leave behind. “ Amazing Insight.

Fan Ho’s work will always be a source of inspiration. He was one of those photographers who loved to shoot against the light and in doing so, he captured ethereal scenes. I also love to shoot in the same manner which is one of the many reasons I will continue to cherish his work, his lifetime achievement.
He will not be forgotten, not by me anyhow.
Thanks Ted for this homage to Fan Ho.

I love his work... I was a kid in the early 70s growing up in HK. I remember some of the same streets, the central market and places he photographed...

I've only been following The Art of Photography for the past few months (this is late April 2017) and I've learned so much! I thought I knew a fair amount about photography, but your videos about photographers and their work, as well as comments on creativity, etc. have broadened and deepened my knowledge of photography. I hope that that'll make me a better photographer over time. Kudos, and many thanks, to you and your work.

I had a quarter life crisis. Gonna quit it all to take up photography. Well let's just say I'm not doing that but I still keep watching your videos. I'm learning as much as I can in my free time :)

I remember walking on Powell St. in S.F. in the 70's and seeing Ho's work at a shop. I was just out of the Army and spent a year in Saigon running the CICV photo lab till it was shutting down. I couldn't believe the prints I was seeing. I certainly didn't have the completely reasonable amount of money he was charging for them. I never saw his work again until I hit the Leica store on Bush about 12 years ago in their book collection. When I think of Ho, I remember the projection room in Citizen Kane...

It's sad, I have just finished watching your video on Fan Ho you did in 2014 and as it was ending, couldn't resist myself so jumped on to his website but as I was admiring his work, this video started playing in the background window because autoplay was on and you said Fan Ho is no more... broke my heart ...

Hi Ted, I'm so glad I got to know Fan Ho's work through this video. I really loved the picture that appears at 1:36 but researching about it seems to me it's Rui Palha's, a portuguese photographer.
Keep up with the channel and thanks for all the good content!

His tonal range is similar to W. Eugene Smith's. I wonder if Fan Ho used a lot of bleaching & selenium toning in addition to dodging & burning, techniques that Smith used to get that fantastic "symphony of tones."

The link to his site doesn't work and there seems to be a legal battle about who owns the rights. Blue Lotus Gallery versus a group using different names to include fan ho photography and the prices for the books are very different and there seems to be some colouring that was done on some pictures. There is a current court case on going. Could you point me to the right place to buy books of his photography?

I can imagine how you feel about this...it is about mortality, but you are the one (among others) that feels left behind, people like him, and for you certainly H. Feinstein, set somehow a kind of safe fence that feels awkward to lose one day.
