In 1980 I lived in Iwakuni for 6 months. Every weekend, I would travel the "slow" train to Hiroshima and enjoy a baseball game or visit the museums. I found the younger generation not only knew English, they would engage me in a conversation just to practice it. Overall, I found the Japanese people to be very polite but aloof. Only when I showed genuine interest in their language and culture did they open up. So, if anyone wishes to understand the Japanese people and interact with them, show your interest to learn and they will open up like a flower.
If anything, I’d live in Japan to learn their language and culture! Definitely on my bucket list of places to visit, but based on the video, you’ve convinced me to even try living there for a few months or even a year. Thanks!
Tokyo is pretty expensive, I would recommend using share houses like Oakhouse or Sakura house if you don’t mind sharing kitchens or showers to get costs down

I've been in Japan for a few months as a student on a very low budget. It is definitely doable if you are ok with living in a sharehouse and you do your groceries at supermarkets rather than convenience stores. There are companies online offering unlimited data pocket wi-fi for less than 30$ a month that are very fast and reliable. Entertainment in general is quite expensive, so to have fun it is definitely better to save up on anything else. Japan is great, definitely recommended, i will go back asap.

And how was your experience learning Japanese and communicating in it during your stay? I'm curious how much Japanese you'll need to know in order to get by in Japan for 3 months.

I met a lot of people (locals and expats) through my co-living space and local meetups on Meetup.com. Also through Bumble and Instagram. I didn't learn any Japanese at all, however, except arigato (thank you). I'll have to work on that next time!
Last time I went there with my wife we stayed in mayamaedaira, a residential area that is about 20 mins on train from shibuya, we payed about $1100 for 25 nights for a really nice airbnb, so I guess it's all about shopping around a bit.

My wife and I visited Japan about 7 years ago, when I landed I got a hotspot so we could figure out where we wanted to go and how to get there, it was faster than the one in the us, for breakfast we usually got rice balls and coffee, lunch sandwiches and dinner we ate almost anything, Japan was so clean and felt very safe as do most of the countries in Asia.....
I used to live in China and can relate to many of the downsides, except for the expensive part. China is generally dirt cheap and it has great food, but then there's the VPN issue 😅 Otherwise the very kind attitude might not be as strong, but the Chinese have a certain sense of wanting to make international friends. Have you thought about going there?

It's (supposedly) the greenest and cleanest city while housing tech giants like the Alibaba Group! Shanghai might be easier in terms of English communication with the locals though - your call. I found Hangzhou a better fit for my time studying there! :)

You should have looked into a sharehouse. A lot of students and short term business people stay there. Cheaper than Air BNB and you can meet people in similar circumstance as yourself.
Japan is one of the most pleasant and easiest places in the world to acclimatise to (winter, holds blue skies, even when it's freezing, the climate is a dry non clammy, cold). But you need to love the stability Japan brings with it; because it is ultra traditional, ultra conservative. Young, take on 'wild West looks, but Japan isn't easy for the wild at heart! It is creative! For me the food offering is terrifying if, you're gluten free. Plain onigiri (rice triangle wrapped in seaweed, yummy and g.f., when out, for me! Of course you can cook your own food. 🌿💚
Awesome video! I studied abroad in Tokyo in 2007 and it sounds like the internet situation has remained the same! 😂 I really miss it there and have been thinking of going back permanently. I remember thinking it was expensive back then too and pretty hard to assimilate. Easy to get lonely if you don’t have a good command of the language unfortunately.
I can't say I've ever been to Japan unfortunately, but ever since I was like eight I always had this fascination for their culture and when I was around 12 I decided that before I die I was going to travel the world, and Japan was going to be my first stop Due to unforeseen and obvious circumstances as of late, that hasn't exactly been possible (also not to mention the fact that I'm a 17-year-old still in high school) but I've been wanting to go for the longest time, so as soon as I can, and whenever the pandemic is over I really want to at least visit. And honestly, if things go well I may even seriously consider living there since that's been a dream of mine too

Japan has some very strong "pros," but the cost of housing is one of the most important factors for me in a longer-term destination, so ultimately Japan still ranks below other Asia destinations like Vietnam and Thailand which are worlds cheaper.

I've never been to Japan, but I am toying with the idea of living there long-term, from time to time. I think I have quite a broad understanding of the challenges that are awaiting, over there. The thing that worries me the most, actually, is the whole work-life balance. Japanese people work insane hours. It doesn't even seems weird to them to sleep over at work. While the west for the most part solved those issues in the 19th century. But sure, if I ever manage to find gainful employment there - on my (western) terms - I'm more than ready to learn the language and culture.
I hope to move here in a year so this video was helpful! I’m in undergrad rn and hope to be accepted into medical school and take the MCAT by this upcoming summer and have the ability to graduate a semester early. I want to do an exchange program where I still receive all my scholarships but am able to move abroad that last semester that I don’t even need because I’ll be done with everything else!
I’m always surprised there are not more people upset with glossy laptop and iPad screens. All those blinding and distracting reflections. I despise glossy screens. Nothing like trying to concentrate on something, while having reflections and lights dance all across the screen. Apple used to offer the choice of having a matte screen on laptops for an additional $150 dollars, but decided to kick those customers in the gut later on when they and took away that option on products produced after 2012. I found pods in Tokyo for $50 a night. Which I'll be staying this November. I'm working on an English certificate in order to live and work in Japan.

It is creative! For me the food offering is terrifying if, you're gluten free. Plain onigiri (rice triangle wrapped in seaweed, yummy and g.f., when out, for me! Awesome video! I studied abroad in Tokyo in 2007 and it sounds like the internet situation has remained the same! 😂 I really miss it there and have been thinking of going back permanently. I remember thinking it was expensive back then too and pretty hard to assimilate. Easy to get lonely if you don’t have a good command of the language unfortunately.

I can't say I've ever been to Japan unfortunately, but ever since I was like eight I always had this fascination for their culture and when I was around 12 I decided that before I die I was going to travel the world, and Japan was going to be my first stop
Due to unforeseen and obvious circumstances as of late, that hasn't exactly been possible (also not to mention the fact that I'm a 17-year-old still in high school) but I've been wanting to go for the longest time, so as soon as I can, and whenever the pandemic is over I really want to at least visit. And honestly, if things go well I may even seriously consider living there since that's been a dream of mine too

I currently live in Japan and have been doing lifestyle videos about living there and traveling south east Asia. Your video gave great advise. Japan is extremely expensive. I live about 30 mins from Tokyo and everything is ridiculously expensive

Japan has some very strong "pros," but the cost of housing is one of the most important factors for me in a longer-term destination, so ultimately Japan still ranks below other Asia destinations like Vietnam and Thailand which are worlds cheaper.

Dude - I had no idea they were behind us until I was editing the video! Big bummer because they seemed very enthusiastic. Another place that is wild to walk around with the camera as an American is China or Macau - draws a huge crowd!

I've never been to Japan, but I am toying with the idea of living there long-term, from time to time. I think I have quite a broad understanding of the challenges that are awaiting, over there. The thing that worries me the most, actually, is the whole work-life balance. Japanese people work insane hours. It doesn't even seems weird to them to sleep over at work. While the west for the most part solved those issues in the 19th century.
But sure, if I ever manage to find gainful employment there - on my (western) terms - I'm more than ready to learn the language and culture.

I hope to move here in a year so this video was helpful! I’m in undergrad rn and hope to be accepted into medical school and take the MCAT by this upcoming summer and have the ability to graduate a semester early. I want to do an exchange program where I still receive all my scholarships but am able to move abroad that last semester that I don’t even need because I’ll be done with everything else!

I’m always surprised there are not more people upset with glossy laptop and iPad screens. All those blinding and distracting reflections. I despise glossy screens. Nothing like trying to concentrate on something, while having reflections and lights dance all across the screen. Apple used to offer the choice of having a matte screen on laptops for an additional $150 dollars, but decided to kick those customers in the gut later on when they and took away that option on products produced after 2012. Then again, Apple has a reputation for taking things away from customers, while greatly increasing the price at the same time. Appleholes!
By the way, what happened to your wrist? At 10:25 or so, it looked as if your wearing a wrist brace.
