I'm new on this train - this is a masterpiece in my humble opinion - Robert Earl and Raul killed it but - this version is the best by far - this cat is incredible - and a bad ass guitar player - I fancy myself as a guitar picker who sings a little - Dave is an inspiration - will aspire to play at this level - Great Performance
I dearly love this Band and what they mean tome and My deceased husband of 10 years now- We feel in love with them and saw them many times while he was travelling and came to Greenville SC - We always hung out back stage in the dressing rooms with them! Dave Signed my belly!! Ha! so many Great times
I've had the great fortune to see him live on two occasions. New Year's Eve 1987 at The Wiltern( opening for Los Lobos),and on St. Patrick's Day 20+ year's ago at a small club on Vine St. just north of Hollywood Bl.
I was very lucky to attend a party in Downey Ca while I was in high school in 1978 or 79 at someone's house where Blasters were playlng in the backyard. Good time for sure.
X, during a break for Billy Zoom, played the best version(s) of this song. I xNEVERx PASS UP THE CHANCE TO PLAY THIS IN A JOINT WITH A DECENT JUKEBOX AS DONE BY THE GREAT X! NEITHER SHOULD YOU‽
This goes back a bit......This was a great band. Really liked Joe Terry's work whenever we saw them live. Just another great song from one of our best songwriters.
paul levine Hey paul thet were a rockabilly group that had a big following in the 70's along W/ Reverend Horton Heat.. Big in the Dallas Scene in those days. They Were big in the La scene as well..
Amazing Performance By Dave Alvin, especially when you have a couple of badass performers from Springfield Mo on Drums and Keyboard backing you!. Keep doing what you're doing.
Agree . . We've been fortunate in the Bay Area to see him the last few years at Hardly Strictly. Past October, he surprised everybody by having his brother Phil come out and do a song with him. Phil just survived a bad heart attack when touring in Spain with him.
Just saw/heard Dave & the Guilty Women in Portland, OR River City Music Festival. Eegadds, Manfred. I'm hooked on these folks. Great stuff. Can't get enough. THis sounds splendid. Check out the Time Jumpers too. And Quebe Sisters. And Peter Rowan.
Yupp!! This is the first videogclip I've ever seen which REALLY shows Dave as the genie he is. Could someone PLEASE kick some ass inside the company who got the copyrights of this show; - Please, please release it! WE WANT IT!!!!
Great song, but some objectionable lyrics would benefit from this wholesome re-write: 'Sitting alone on the steps, I'm not willing to cry. Down by the border, too many people are willing to lie.'
National treasure and one of the best American songwriters ever as evidenced by this song.
After all these years and countless listens, this song still gives me goosebumps. It's beyond good.
Bare bones lyricism to perfect tone to top notch musicians. Goddamn, this man deserves love.

Dave Alvin deserves to be far more widely known and appreciated than he is.
agreed
Never pass up a chance to see this guy live. His incredible talent always makes for a wonderful evening.
Once again all I have to report is that Dave Alvin is amazing.
It doesn't matter what the calendar says, it's always the 4th of July when I hear Dave.
Cheers, I concur, him and when he plays with John Doe.

Dave Alvin is fantastic. I appreciate him and this great form of American Music.......I'm spreading the word.
One of his best tunes... and he has a bunch.

this is one bad man on the guitar, saw him in Santa Fe last night, this guy holds court on the stage. Played just over 2 straight hours, no breaks.
A true American Legend.

Dave Alvin: the KING of the sad song...
Man I dug Dave Alvin and the Blasters, great songs and a little infighting with brother Phil but like the Kinks they worked it out.. Love this stuff..
Very good, love the steel work... I watch this show religiously but I've never seen him before..
paul levine Hey paul thet were a rockabilly group that had a big following in the 70's along W/ Reverend Horton Heat.. Big in the Dallas Scene in those days. They Were big in the La scene as well..
Loved his work with X..he was on Hey Zeus and he rocked so great it was sick...
I've seen Dave many times in great little bars. He's awesome. I wish I'd gotten to see him when he was with the Blasters.

Going to see him in Kansas City on the 9th...the fourth concert and if it is as good as the other three, I'll be more than satisfied!

I saw the Blasters in 1980 in Cincinnati when they opened up for Eric Clapton. I had never heard of them, but I liked them. Dave is still good.
Love this tune!
fantastic...
GREAT version of a GREAT song.
Townes Van Zandt and Lightening Hopkins
THE BEST!
DA makes me want to have a cigarette and I don't even smoke. I'm so fortunate that I get to see him about once a year. Took my son last time.
never seen him + I'm in Louisville -
listening to dave alvin is like getting a long cool pull off a straw when you're so thirsty you can't remember what it's like not to be...
RIP Gaff!
Is that David Lindley on steel?
It's Rick Shea. Great songwriter, multi instrumentalist.
Pride of Downey.
Did he write this or Robert Earl Keen?
@DillonUSMC27 Dave wrote it.
my uncle nbd
This is actually a weak performance. My god, X kills this song a thousand times better. And yeah, I know it's HIS song.
Great song, but some objectionable lyrics would benefit from this wholesome re-write: 'Sitting alone on the steps, I'm not willing to cry. Down by the border, too many people are willing to lie.'
Objectionable lyrics??
Go write your own song....
