Mato, I read about Schlechter many years ago, and was fascinated and also very much saddened by the tragedy of his life of hardship and his death. Thank you so much for enabling us to see his wonderful games.
An excellent game to memorize in its entirety. Only 16 moves long. By the way the a4, Ng5 sacrifice, and the "Greek gift" are often seen in games that begin with the "London System" opening...in case anyone likes them.
I have been watching Mato's videos lately and am impressed with the game.I really love it when I am able to spot the moves of the masters.I just have this query:Why is it called sicilian defence if only two moves are played? What is being defended right at the start ? Sicilian defence was not used in this game, though
The Trojan Horse was the gift the Greeks gave the Trojans as the Greeks pretended to give up their siege of Troy and sail away. But the horse was full of seamen, who let the returning Greeks in the gate to destroy Troy. The knight sacrifice was the real Greek Gift which let the bishop, rook, queen and king in the gate to bring checkmate.
Hi @MatoJelic, I'm a big fan of yours and like all your videos. As a suggestion, at the end of your videos, could you please add the entire game in quick recap mode? This helps people like to me learn more quickly instead of rewinding the video. Also the game notes in description, if possible please.
If Schlechter had been called Peter instead of Carl we would all have known the outcome of the battle before it was played out from the Russian story - but as it was it was schlect for the wolf anyway - i mean what do you expect?
"Hi, this is Mato. Welcome to my online chess lecture" - this line is more famous than "my name is Bond, James Bond".
Yeh! Schlechter was a beast. Surprised I have not heard of him before.

That's the kind of attack I can easily spot and happily start - but I nearly always screw up.
Ha ha, I got every puzzle wrong, making the exact mistakes you predicted. Love your videos!

Liking the new intro! Thanks for all the videos Mr. Jelic. I'm a fan for almost 5 years now, and haven't even watched half of them. Very entertaining.
Anytime I now see a game played in Vienna around 1890, I know I'm in for a treat! Thanks, Mato!!

Thanks. I was really curious why did he call it as a Greek gift. Now I know.
Rook to H5 then what stops Checkmate h8 on the next move

"And this is a critical position of the game"...as soon as I heard this...BAM! First move I jump onto is exactly the move that doesn't work....lol!
It sucks when you get mated like this. I always get the feeling that such an attack shouldn't work at all.
